The contribution of hydrogen evolution processes during corrosion of aluminium and aluminium alloys investigated by potentiodynamic polarisation coupled with real-time hydrogen measurement
No full textWater reduction, which leads to the evolution of hydrogen, is a key cathodic process for corrosion of many metals of technological interest such as magnesium, aluminium, and zinc; and its understanding is critical for design of new alloys or protective treatments. In this work, real-time hydrogen evolution measurement was coupled with potentiodynamic measurements on high-purity aluminium and AA2024-T3 aluminium alloy. The results show that both materials exhibit superfluous hydrogen evolution during anodic polarisation and that the presence of cathodically active alloying elements enhances hydrogen evolution. Furthermore, it was observed for the first time that superfluous hydrogen evolution also occurs during cathodic polarisation. Both the anodic and cathodic behaviours can be rationalised by a model assuming that superfluous hydrogen evolution occurs locally where the naturally formed oxide is disrupted. Specifically, during anodic polarisation, oxide disruption is due to the combined presence of chloride ions and acidification, whereas during cathodic polarisation, such disruption is due to alkalinisation. Furthermore, the presence of cathodically active alloying elements enhances superfluous hydrogen evolution in response to either anodic or cathodic polarisation, and results in ‘cathodic activation’ of the dissolved regions

No full textFabio Tronchetti is an Associate Professor of Law at the School of Law of the Harbin Institute of Technology, People’s Republic of China, where he also serves as Director of the International Law Department. Since January 2014 he works as an Adjunct Professor of Comparative National Space Law at the the School of Law of the University of Mississippi, United States. Earlier in his career he was Lecturer and Academic Coordinator at the International Institute of Air and Space Law, Leiden University, the Netherlands.
Professor Tronchetti is regularly invited to give lectures at several European and Chinese Universities, including the Cologne University (Germany), the Leiden University (the Netherlands) and the Beihang University (Beijing, China) and has participated as a speaker at numerous international conferences.
Prof. Tronchetti’s scholarly is primarily in the areas of international space law and public international law. His publications include two books and more than 20 articles in internationally peer-reviewed space law and policy journals, such as Space Policy, the German Journal of Air and Space Law, the Journal of Space Law, etc.
He holds a PhD in International Space Law (Leiden University) and an Advanced LL.M in International Relations (Bologna University, Italy). He is Member of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), European Centre for Space Law (ECSL), and the Asian Society of International Law (ASIL). Full text linkWhen electrochemical techniques are used to probe the surface of corroding magnesium with the aim of obtaining quantitative information on the corrosion process, two peculiarities are generally observed: i) with anodic polarization, the rate of hydrogen evolution increases instead of decreasing and ii) during electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, an inductive contribution is often observed at the low-frequency end of the spectra. The presence of these two phenomena clearly has an impact on the methodology that should be applied to correctly estimate corrosion rates from electrochemical data. The aim of this work is to provide a general mathematical description of the corroding magnesium surface that, under minimal a priori assumptions regarding the reaction kinetics, can account simultaneously for both superfluous hydrogen evolution and inductive response. The mathematical results are consistent with the suggestion that the superfluous hydrogen evolution is mainly related to the increase of the surface of the active corrosion front during anodic polarization. Further, the obtained results show that the inductive response is expected when, at the corrosion front, oxidation of magnesium proceeds faster than hydrogen evolution
