From the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation to a regularized forward-backward parabolic equation

    No full text
A rigorous proof is given for the convergence of the solutions of a viscous Cahn-Hilliard system to the solution of the regularized version of the forward-backward parabolic equation, as the coefficient of the diffusive term goes to 0. Non-homogenous Neumann boundary condition are handled for the chemical potential and the subdifferential of a possible non-smooth double-well functional is considered in the equation. An error estimate for the difference of solutions is also proved in a suitable norm and with a specified rate of convergence

Nonlocal to Local Convergence of Phase Field Systems with Inertial Term

    No full text
This paper deals with a nonlocal model for a hyperbolic phase field system coupling the standard energy balance equation for temperature with a dynamic for the phase variable: the latter includes an inertial term and a nonlocal convolution-type operator where the family of kernels depends on a small parameter. We rigorously study the asymptotic convergence of the system as the approximating parameter tends to zero and we obtain at the limit the local system with the elliptic laplacian operator acting on the phase variable. Our analysis is based on some asymptotic properties on nonlocal-to-local convergence that have been recently and successfully applied to families of Cahn-Hilliard models

On a phase field model for RNA-Protein dynamics

    No full text
A phase field model which describes the formation of protein-RNA complexes subject to phase segregation is analyzed. A single protein, two RNA species, and two complexes are considered. Protein and RNA species are governed by coupled reaction-diffusion equations which also depend on the two complexes. The latter ones are driven by two Cahn-Hilliard equations with Flory-Huggins potential and reaction terms depending on the solution variables. The resulting nonlinear coupled system is equipped with no-flux boundary conditions and suitable initial conditions. The former ones entail some mass conservation constraints which are also due to the nature of the reaction terms. The existence of global weak solutions in a bounded (two- or) three-dimensional domain is established. In dimension two, some weighted-in-time regularity properties are shown. In particular, the complexes instantaneously get uniformly separated from the pure phases. Taking advantage of this result, a unique continuation property is proven. Among the many technical difficulties, the most significant one arises from the fact that the two complexes are initially nonexistent, so their initial conditions are zero i.e., they start from a pure phase. Thus we must solve, in particular, a system of two coupled Cahn-Hilliard equations with singular potential and nonlinear sources without the usual assumption on the initial datum, i.e., the initial phase cannot be pure. This novelty requires a new approach to estimate the chemical potential in a suitable Lp(L2)L^p(L^2)-space with p(1,2)p\in(1,2). This technique can be extended to other models like, for instance, the well-known Cahn-Hilliard-Oono equation.Comment: 56 page

Bounded solutions and their asymptotics for a doubly nonlinear Cahn–Hilliard system

    No full text
In this paper we deal with a doubly nonlinear Cahn–Hilliard system, where both an internal constraint on the time derivative of the concentration and a potential for the concentration are introduced. The definition of the chemical potential includes two regularizations: a viscous and a diffusive term. First of all, we prove existence and uniqueness of a bounded solution to the system using a nonstandard maximum-principle argument for time-discretizations of doubly nonlinear equations. Possibly including singular potentials, this novel result brings improvements over previous approaches to this problem. Secondly, under suitable assumptions on the data, we show the convergence of solutions to the respective limit problems once either of the two regularization parameters vanishes

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
