    Effects of primary and secondary creep formulations on API 579-1 residual life evaluation

    A sound material constitutive equation is crucial for the residual life evaluation of pressure components operating in the creep range. In a previous work [1], the authors investigated how a secondary creep formulation encompassing both the dis-locational and the diffusional range influences the assessment of damage according to API 579-1 [2] within the whole component stress range. In the present paper the work has been extended in order to include the effects of primary creep in the constitutive equation for the ASTM A335 P22 low-alloy steel used for the manufacturing of the HRSG header whose welded details were previously investigated. The creep damage was first calculated according to API 579-1 Section 10 via inelastic, time-dependent FEA and the Larson-Miller approach (LMP) with code-defined, minimum time-to-rupture data. This led to a first reckoning of the primary creep impact in terms of API 579-1 residual life for the components under evaluation. The API 579-1 time-to-rupture was then assessed with a detailed stress analysis implementing the Omega Method and its creep strain rate formulation. The obtained results were finally compared to those previously determined through the LMP procedure and the different creep correlations (secondary and primary+secondary)

    Rotating Stall Model and Simulation of Two-Stage Centrifugal Compressors - ASME Paper GT2007-27922

    Often turbo-compressors exhibit the maximum efficiency condition very close to the stall limit, so that it would be highly interesting to have a deep comprehension of this phenomenon. Despite the large diffusion of the multi-stage centrifugal compressors in different fields of the technology, such as natural gas pipe-lines or chemical factories, at the best authors’ knowledge, to date no theoretical model exists for rotating stall in these machines. This paper deals with a model for simulating multi-stage centrifugal compressor flow pattern during rotating stall. The model is not able to capture the stall inception, so the velocity and pressure fields are calculated throughout the machine once rotating stall has developed. The model consists of an implementation of that proposed by Moore for single-stage centrifugal compressors, so the simplifying hypotheses are: irrotational upstream fluid flow, inviscid and incompressible flow, stationary flow in the frame rotating at the same frequency of the stall cell; infinite blades are supposed both in rotors and return channel. Even if these fluid-dynamic hypotheses are really strong, it is worth of note that the reference models for rotating stall simulation in turbo-compressors (namely the Moore’s models) are based, at the present time, on them. In a previous step of this research, the authors utilized a semiempirical approach, with phases changes between first and second diffuser based on experimental data. Now this hypothesis is removed and the model is fully analytical. The mathematical model is solved by numerical way, leaving the original semianalytical scheme of Moore, so allowing the stall cell propagation frequency to be calculated. The computer code is written in C language for Linux operating system. It was tested in singlestage configuration with results according to Moore’s theory; for two-stage setup, obtained results appear consistent and qualitatively according with experimental tests and, unlike the single stage analysis, only fast rotation waves were found

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Residual-stress, material characterization in p22 hrsg-pipeline butt joint

    Previous study evaluated residual stress in a circumferential “V”-groove butt joint of a heat-recovery steam generator (HRSG) pipeline; the material was ASTM A-335-Grade P22. Aim had been to check on the influence over creep-relaxation previously found out for a tee made of the same material. The butt joint had been operating for the same period of 200,000 hours, same temperature of 528°C at almost a half pressure (0.46 Kg/mm2 vs. 1.06 Kg/mm2). X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique applied close to the weld highlighted anomalously high stress-level on the outer surface for all four butt-joint samples tested. Residual-stress over 400 MPa observed along the cylinder's tangential direction was statically not acceptable. On the inner surface where deposited beads may have tempered adjacent base material, measurement via blind hole-drilling (BHD) technique showed a symmetrical plane-state residual-stress of 199 MPa. It was consistent with that observed via XRD on the outer surface in the cylinder's longitudinal direction. Supposing a case of incomplete post heating planned for the weld may have explained the occurrence of being much higher than 40 MPa, value predicted after 200,000 hours. Similar influence over creep results found out for the tee and the butt joint had validated modeling welding simulation considered for both joints. A comprehensive new series of XRD tests aims now at measuring residual stress across the cylinder's wall, both inner and outer sides. The shallow layer considered has thickness sufficient for building a map of measurements covering different depths and locations on the surface. The experimental plan includes also BHD tests supporting the XRD ones. Comparison with previous measurements roughly shows stress level increasing similarly across the cylinder's wall from the inner side on: Average stress values, however, appear lower than previous measurements, showing better compatibility to the analysis results

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
