Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Asset and Liability Management for Insurance Products with Minimum Guarantees: The UK Case
Full text linkModern insurance products are becoming increasingly complex, offering various guarantees,
surrender options and bonus provisions. A case in point are the with-profits insurance
policies offered by UK insurers. While these policies have been offered in some form for centuries,
in recent years their structure and management have become substantially more
involved. The products are particularly complicated due to the wide discretion they afford
insurers in determining the bonuses policyholders receive. In this paper, we study the problem
of an insurance firm attempting to structure the portfolio underlying its with-profits fund. The
resulting optimization problem, a non-linear program with stochastic variables, is presented in
detail. Numerical results show how the model can be used to analyse the alternatives available
to the insurer, such as different bonus policies and reserving methods
High resolution colorimetric imaging of paintings
No full textWith the aim of providing a digital electronic replacement for conventional photography of paintings, a scanner has been constructed based on a 3000x2300 pel resolution camera which is moved precisely over a 1 metre square area. Successive patches are assembled to form a mosaic which covers the whole area at c. 20 pels/mm resolution, which is sufficient to resolve the surface texture, particularly craquelure. To provide high colour accuracy, a set of seven broad-band interference filters are used to cover the visible spectrum. A calibration procedure based upon a least-mean-squares fit to the colour of patches from a Macbeth Colorchecker chart yields an average colour accuracy of better than 3 units in the CMC uniform colour space. This work was mainly carried within the VASARI and MARC projects, funded by the European Commission's ESPRIT programme, involving companies and galleries from around Europe. The system is being used to record images for conservation research, for archival purposes and to assist in computer-aided learning in the field of art history. The paper will describe the overall hardware and software design. The theoretical basis for the colour calibration methodology is described. The mosaic assembly procedure and some of the associated image processing routines developed are described. Preliminary results from the research will be presented
