CEO appointment announcements’ impact on share prices of Nasdaq Helsinki listed companies
Toimitusjohtajan roolin merkityksen on havaittu vuosien saatossa kasvaneen yritysten johdossa. Aiempi tutkimus on osoittanut toimitusjohtajavaihdokseen liittyvän useita eri tekijöitä, joilla on vaikutusta vaihdoksesta syntyviin seurauksiin. Aiempaa tutkimusta Suomen kaltaisilta pieniltä markkinoilta on tehty toimenpiteen osalta hyvin vähän.
Over the years, the role of the CEO has been observed to have grown in importance. The removal of the CEO and the selection of a new CEO are important decisions for the board of directors. Previous research has shown that there are a number of complex factors associated with CEO change that have an impact on the consequences of the change. There is quite little previous research on the effects of CEO change in small markets such as Finland.
In this master’s thesis, I investigated the impact of CEO announcements on share prices of Nasdaq Helsinki publicly traded companies. The empirical research was conducted as an event study to investigate the abnormal returns generated by new CEO announcements in the stock market. The values obtained were used as part of a regression analysis to examine the impact of CEO-specific factors on market reaction.
No average positive or negative abnormal returns were observed in the event study for new CEO announcements. Among CEO-specific factors, age was found to have an impact on market reaction. The results were consistent with previous studies. The results highlighted the complexity of CEO changes and the influence of manager-specific competence-related factors on market reaction
The economic effects of Covid-19 pandemic on ice hockey clubs in Finnish men’s SM-liiga
Tilinpäätösanalyysissä selvisi seurojen toiminnan olleen taloudellisesti tappiollista pandemian aikana. Selvinneet tulokset tukivat teoriaa seurojen huonosta kyvystä sopeutua suuriin muutoksiin. Seurojen saamat avustukset ovat olleet todella tarpeellisia. Tutkimuksen tulokset ovat yhtäläisiä aiempiin kansainvälisiin tutkimustuloksiin.Corona pandemic, which started in spring 2020, changed the operation environment in various industries. To guarantee populations health and safety, many public events were cancelled, or audience numbers were limited. Professional sports clubs that base their business on match events, faced financial difficulties during the pandemic.
The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to study the financial state of the ice hockey clubs in SM-liiga during pandemic. This study was conducted as a financial analysis of the four accounting periods of the league’s clubs, from 2017-18 to 2020-21. The changes to the industry caused by the pandemic were examined as a part of the financial analysis.
The financial analysis revealed that the ice hockey clubs in SM-liiga were unprofitable during the pandemic. These results supported the theory that sport clubs readjust poorly to substantial changes in their operations. The financial support from public authorities has been critical to these clubs. The findings of this study are similar to international studies on the same topic
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
