    Abstract: This study examines the transformation of military expansion within the Ottoman Empire during the reigns of Sultan Selim I and Sultan Suleiman I. It aims to delineate the expansions across various Eastern and Western regions under their leadership, while analyzing the shifting strategic orientations and the resulting impacts. Utilizing a political approach, this research identifies patterns of change in Ottoman military expansion. The study employs the historical method, consisting of four stages: heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, conducted through qualitative library research. The findings indicate that Selim I’s expansion solidified the Ottoman Empire as the most dominant political and religious power in the Islamic world, particularly in the Middle East. Conversely, Suleiman I’s expansion established the Empire as a major global power formidable to Europe. Consequently, the Ottomans secured political legitimacy, notably through recognition from the Abbasid Caliphate. The impacts of these territorial expansions included the containment of the spread of Christianity and Catholicism, which significantly influenced ideological competition across Eurasia, and the strengthening of Sunni ideology by consolidating Ottoman authority in the East. Abstrak: Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang transformasi ekspansi militer Kekhalifahan Turki Usmani pada masa Sultan Salim I dan Sultan Sulaiman I. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menguraikan ekspansi di berbagai wilayah Timur dan Barat oleh Sultan Salim I dan Sultan Sulaiman I, menganalisis perubahan orientasi dan dampak yang terjadi akibat ekspansi wilayah oleh kedua sultan tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan politik untuk mengetahui pola perubahan ekspansi militer Turki Usmani era Sultan Salim I dan Sultan Sulaiman I. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode sejarah yang mencakup empat tahap, yaitu heuristik, verifikasi, interpretasi dan historiografi. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan melakukan studi pustaka (library research). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ekspansi Sultan Salim I memperkuat posisi Turki Usmani sebagai kekuatan politik dan keagamaan yang paling mendominasi di dunia Islam, khususnya di Timur Tengah. Sementara itu, ekspansi Sultan Sulaiman I memperkuat posisi Turki Usmani sebagai kekuatan besar yang patut diperhitungkan oleh Eropa. Dengan demikian, Turki Usmani meraih legitimasi kekuasaan, yaitu mendapat pengakuan dari kekhalifahan Abbasiyah. Dampak ekspansi wilayah tersebut yaitu Turki Usmani mampu membendung penyebaran agama Kristen dan Katolik yang berpengaruh signifikan terhadap persaingan ideologi di wilayah Asia Eropa, dan memperkuat ideologi Sunni dengan menanamkan kekuasaan Turki Usmani di wilayah Timur

    Obesity is associated with insulin resistance and components of the metabolic syndrome in Lebanese adolescents

    Background: Prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in obese adolescents has been reported to range between 1842percent, depending on country of origin, thus suggesting an ethnic-based association between obesity and MS.Aim: This study aims to investigate the magnitude of the association between obesity, insulin resistance and components of MS among adolescents in Lebanon.Subjects and methods: The sample included 263 adolescents at 4 th and 5 th Tanner stages of puberty (104 obese; 78 overweight; 81 normal weight). Anthropometric, biochemical and blood pressure measurements were performed. Body fat was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.Results: According to International Diabetes Federation criteria, MS was identified in 21.2percent of obese, 3.8percent of overweight and 1.2percent of normal weight subjects. The most common metabolic abnormalities among subjects having MS were elevated waist circumference (96.2percent), low HDL (96.2percent) and hypertriglyceridemia (73.1percent). Insulin resistance was identified in all subjects having MS.     Autonomous network selection strategy for telecardiology application in heterogeneous wireless networks

    Existing telecardiology systems are mostly relying on a high bandwidth wireless technology. However, in developing countries, the coverage of high bandwidth wireless network is still imperfect. Thus, the existing telecardiology systems are unable to guarantee users are always connected to the healthcare service provider at anywhere. To overcome this issue, an autonomous network selection strategy for telecardiology application in heterogeneous wireless networks is proposed. This strategy is aware of user velocity, network quality, and telecardiology service setting (e.g. image, vital signs, ECG, etc.). It performs handover from one network to another without disruption to the link. The simulation results show that the proposed strategy outperforms conventional bandwidth-based strategy in term of handover rate, ping-pong effect and handover failure. It has successfully reduced the handover rate up to 97%, eliminated the ping-pong effect and handover failure in both high and low speed scenarios

    A vertical handover management for mobile telemedicine system using heterogeneous wireless networks

    Application of existing mobile telemedicine system is restricted by the imperfection of network coverage, network capacity, and mobility. In this paper, a novel telemedicine based handover decision making (THODM) algorithm is proposed for mobile telemedicine system using heterogeneous wireless networks. The proposed algorithm select the best network based on the services requirement to ensure the connected or targeted network candidate has sufficient capacity for supporting the telemedicine services. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm minimizes the number of unnecessary handover to WLAN in high speed environment. The throughput achieved by the proposed algorithm is up to 75% and 205% higher than Cellular and RSS based schemes, respectively. Moreover, the average data transmission cost of THODM algorithm is 24% and 69.2% lower than the Cellular and RSS schemes. The proposed algorithm minimizes the average transmission cost while maintaining the telemedicine service quality at the highest level in high speed environment
