    Rearing technique for a wild silk worm Actias selene hubner (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae)

    ABSTRACT Actias selene Hubner (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) is wild silk worm of India. It has durable silk. Therefore, its conservation and exploitation in silk industry is integral part of sericulture. However, silk production technology of A. selene is not developed so far. Hence, in the present paper preliminary rearing technique of A. selene is given. Cocoons were formed within 45 days. Cocoon weight, shell weight, shell length, shell width and shell thickness were 7.42 g, 0.93 g, 4.2 cm, 2.2 cm and 0.18 mm respectively, while shell ratio calculated was 12.53%. The rearing success of A. selene was 25% on Terminalia tomentosa W. & A. The mated females laid 105 eggs and produced 22 offspring’s with an average sex ratio (m: f) 1: 0.75.     Poisonous insects of Kolhapur, India and their treatment

    ABSTRACT Kolhapur is located between 15o to 17o North Latitude and 73o to 74o East Latitude with uneven rainfall ranging from 700 mm to 6000 mm and with several types of water bodies and hence with rich biodiversity including poisonous insects. Poisoning from insects is increasing in recent years. Therefore, poisonous insects of Kolhapur region, India have been reported with respect to morphological features, life cycle pattern, poison source, nature of poison, control of poisonous insects and treatment to patients against poisoning. In all, 27 poisonous insects have been reported belonging to the orders Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and Dictyoptera. Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera were dominant orders in the region. Hymenoptera represented by 11 species and Lepidoptera 9 while, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and Dictyoptera orders represented by 3, 2 and 2 species respectively. The insects were controlled by spraying 0.15% Carbaryl or 5% Diazinon or 0.5% Dichlorvos or 1.5% Baygon Symptomatic treatment has been advised with antiallergic drugs and ayurvedic plant juices of tulsi, marigold and periwinkle as wound healing component.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    ABSTRACT Indian moon moth Actias selene, a wild silkworm is not reared in laboratory .in spite of rich diversity of host food plants of Actias silkworm and conducive climate for rearing this worm, very little attention is paid from India. Therefore, boosting of Indian moon moth culture business, biodiversity of host food plants of A. selene have been studied in all, 29 species of host food plants have been reported from different geographical parts of India. The important species refers to Rhizophora sp., Terminalia arjuna, T. tomentosa, Hibiscus sp and Prunus amygdalus, etc. Key words: Indian moon moth, Actias selene, food plants, wild sericulture, India.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Ecology and Control of Brinjal insect pests from Kolhapur region, India

    ABSTRACT Brinjal Solanum melongela L. is an important vegetable crop of subtropics and tropic with fuel, nutritional and ayurvedic medicinal value. In India it is cultivated in almost all states. Therefore, ecology and control of insect pests have been studied from Kolhapur region of India. A total of 12 species of insect pests, namely Leucidonus orbonalis Guen, Euzophera perticella Rag., Epilachna vigintioctopunctata (Fab.), Urentius sentis Diast., Amrasca bigutulla biguttula Dist., Bemisia tabaci Genn., Aleurodicus dispursus (Rus.), Lipaphis erysimi Kalt., Aspidoitus destructor Sign., Aonidiella auranti (Maskell), Thrips palmi Karny and Ants have been recorded damaging Brinjal crop. Out of which L. orbonalis, A. bigutulla bigutulla, A. dispersus, A. destructor, L. erysimi and Ants were found throughout the year. Natural enemies, host plants, life cycle and control measures are suggested in the paper. 0.1% carbaryl or Azadirachtin or 0.05% malathion were found effective. Trichogramma chilonis 1 to 1.5 lakh/ha was found effective for lepidopteran pests as ecofriendly control. Key words : Brinjal, insect-pests, ecology, natural enemies, control.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
