    THE POSITIVE IMPACTS ON CULTURE SHOCK FOR THE MAIN CHARACTER’S SASHI DEPICTED IN ENGLISH VINGLISH FILM

    This study concerns on the analysis of culture shock portrayed in Sashi’s character of English Vinglish film by Gauri Shinde. The main character, Sashi, experiences a lot of culture shock during in America. The purposes of this study are to identify what culture shock are experienced by Sashi, to describe the kinds of stages of culture shock, and to analyze the positive impacts of culture shock experienced by her as the analyzed character. This study used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the film, supported by primary data and secondary data. The English Vinglish film by Gauri Shinde and the film script were the primary data of the study, whereas, the secondary data were taken from the books, journals, and articles that related to the research. The result of the study described that Sashi as the main character in English Vinglish film experienced culture shock. She confronted by the different food, language spoken, and characteristic of Americans. This study found that Sashi encounters four stages of culture shock, they are honeymoon, crisis, continued by adjustment, and adaptation. She also got the positive impacts of culture shock like excitement, amazement, good social interaction, and life changes.     Seismic behavior of single-story asymmetric-plan buildings under uniaxial excitation

    The critical parameters that influence the nonlinear seismic response of asymmetric-plan buildings are identified by evaluating the effects of different asymmetries that may characterize the structure of a building as well as exploring the influence of the ground motion features. First, the main findings reported in the literature on both the linear and nonlinear dynamic response of asymmetric-plan buildings are presented. The common findings and the conflicting conclusions reached in different investigations are pointed out. Then, the results of comprehensive nonlinear dynamic analyses performed for evaluating the seismic response of systems characterized by different strength and stiffness configurations, representative of a large class of asymmetric-plan buildings, are reported. Findings from the study indicate that the building response changes when moving from the linear to the nonlinear range, so that the seismic behavior of asymmetric-plan buildings, apart from the source of asymmetry, can be always classified as irregular. Additionally, it was observed that as the seismic demands cause amplification of system nonlinearity with increasing earthquake intensity, the maximum displacement demand in the different resisting elements tends to be reached with the same deformed configuration of the system. The resultant of the seismic forces producing such a maximum demand is located at the center of resistance and corresponds to the collapse mechanism of the system that provides the maximum lateral strength in the exciting direction of the seismic action.     Robustness evaluation of RC frame buildings to progressive collapse

    A new procedure derived from non-linear static and dynamic analyses is proposed for comparing the relative robustness of RC frame buildings against progressive collapse. The methodology offers a formal way to assess the collapse resistance of structures following the sudden loss of one or more vertical load carrying member/s. The novelty of the proposed methodology lies in the sequential dynamic + static procedure that tracks the redistribution of axial forces following each critical column removal. The basic tool used in the procedure is the ‘‘pushdown’’ analysis, which permits estimation of the residual strength in the structure after it has been damaged by the loss of a critical vertical element. The proposed procedure identifies the critical sequence of column removals and is central to the methodology and the definition of the robustness indices. Referred to as Local Robustness Evaluation (LRE), the methodology is used to develop two robustness indices and applied to two buildings to demonstrate the effectiveness of the procedure in providing a basis for comparing their resistance to progressive collapse
