Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Dimension theory of random self-similar and self-affine constructions
This thesis is structured as follows. Chapter 1 introduces fractal sets before recalling basic mathematical concepts from dynamical systems, measure theory, dimension theory and probability theory.
In Chapter 2 we give an overview of both deterministic and stochastic sets obtained from iterated function systems. We summarise classical results and set most of the basic notation.
This is followed by the introduction of random graph directed systems in Chapter 3, based on the single authored paper [T1] to be published in Journal of Fractal Geometry. We prove that these attractors have equal Hausdorff and upper box-counting dimension irrespective of overlaps. It follows that the same holds for the classical models introduced in Chapter 2. This chapter also contains results about the Assouad dimensions for these random sets.
Chapter 4 is based on the single authored paper [T2] and establishes the box-counting dimension for random box-like self-affine sets using some of the results and the notation developed in Chapter 3. We give some examples to illustrate the results.
In Chapter 5 we consider the Hausdorff and packing measure of random attractors and show that for reasonable random systems the Hausdorff measure is zero almost surely. We further establish bounds on the gauge functions necessary to obtain positive or finite Hausdorff measure for random homogeneous systems.
Chapter 6 is based on a joint article with J. M. Fraser and J.-J. Miao [FMT] to appear in Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems. It is chronologically the first and contains results that were extended in the paper on which Chapter 3 is based.
However, we will give some simpler, alternative proofs in this section and crucially also find the Assouad dimension of some random self-affine carpets and show that the Assouad dimension is always `maximal' in both measure theoretic and topological meanings
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Hölder differentiability of self-conformal devil's staircases
In this paper we consider the probability distribution function of a Gibbs measure supported on a self-conformal set given by an iterated function system (devil's staircase) applied to a compact subset of ℝ. We use thermodynamic multifractal formalism to calculate the Hausdorff dimension of the sets Sα 0, Sα ∞ and Sα, the set of points at which this function has, respectively, Hölder derivative 0, ∞ or no derivative in the general sense. This extends recent work by Darst, Dekking, Falconer, Kesseböhmer and Stratmann, and Yao, Zhang and Li by considering arbitrary such Gibbs measures given by a potential function independent of the geometric potential.Peer reviewe
On the Minkowski content of self-similar random homogeneous iterated function systems
The Minkowski content of a compact set is a fine measure of its geometric
scaling. For Lebesgue null sets it measures the decay of the Lebesgue measure
of epsilon neighbourhoods of the set. It is well known that self-similar sets,
satisfying reasonable separation conditions and non-log comensurable
contraction ratios, have a well-defined Minkowski content. When dropping the
contraction conditions, the more general notion of average Minkowski content
still exists. For random recursive self-similar sets the Minkowski content also
exists almost surely, whereas for random homogeneous self-similar sets it was
recently shown by Z\"{a}hle that the Minkowski content exists in expectation.
In this short note we show that the upper Minkowski content, as well as the
upper average Minkowski content of random homogeneous self-similar sets is
infinite, almost surely, answering a conjecture posed by Z\"{a}hle.
Additionally, we show that in the random homogeneous equicontractive
self-similar setting the lower Minkowski content is zero and the lower average
Minkowski content is also infinite. These results are in stark contrast to the
random recursive model or the mean behaviour of random homogeneous attractors.Comment: 17 page
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
