    Evaluation of histopathological on maedi disease with serological confirmation in North-East of Iran

    BACKGROUND: The described pulmonary lesions are compatible with lesions previously described for maedi. In this study, one of the most important ovine slow viral infections is "Maedi disease" which was evaluated in Mashhad province. METHODS: During the study, ovine lung samples from 170 sheep (>1 year old) with their serum samples were collected in the Mashhad industrial abattoir. Initially, histopathological study for lung samples was carried out by providing H&E staining, serological test and an indirect ELISA on the serum samples. Histopathological study indicated all three lesions of Maedi disease in ovine lung which included smooth muscle hyperplasia (SMH) of alveolar walls, lymphofollicular hyperplasia (LFH) and interstitial pneumonia (IP). Furthermore, some involvement of each lung sample was estimated from mild-moderate and severe. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Results of histopathological study demonstrated 45 cases (26.5%) and 15 cases (8.8%) with moderate degree and severe degree of involvement respectively. Liked-maedi disease included 60 cases (35.3%) of the whole ovine lung samples. Results of serological study showed 34 positive serums (20.0%). In addition, 15 cases (8.8%) of pulmonary lesions which were observed in histopathological study were equal and similar to the lesions previously described for maedi disease, and serological results confirmed them as well. However, there are some pathogens that can cause nearly pathological lesions like maedi in ovine lung. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the pathogen causing maedi disease (maedi-visna virus) can be one of the pathogens causing chronic to subacute lymphoid interstitial pneumonia in Iran.     Application of Analog Adaptive Filters for Dynamic Sensor Compensation

    This paper investigates the application of analog adaptive techniques to the area of dynamic sensor compensation, of which there is little reported work in the literature. The case is illustrated by showing how the response of a load cell can be improved to speed up the process of measurement. The load cell is a sensor with an oscillatory output in which the measurand contributes to the response parameters. Thus, a compensation filter needs to track variation in measurand whereas a simple, fixed filter is only valid at one specific load value. To facilitate this investigation, computer models for the load cell and the adaptive compensation filter have been developed. To allow a practical implementation of the adaptive techniques, a novel piecewise linearization technique is proposed in order to vary a floating voltage-controlled resistor in a linear manner over a wide range. Simulation and practical results are presented, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed techniques

    A new, 3D overlapping-sphere model of cell adhesion:

    Cell adhesion refers to the ability of cells to make enduring and dynamic attachments to extracellular surfaces and to each other; rightly so it is a focal point of current biological research. I have designed a computational framework to model cell adhesion using a modified overlapping-sphere model. A core feature of the model is the three-dimensional representation of a cell surface that can interact mechanically with its environment. The generalization of a cell as a sphere gives our model the compactness to enable the simulations of thousands of cells, comparable to the number of cells typically encountered through small scale studies of early development and disease. Specifically, we use this computational framework to model adhesion between cells in a monolayer and a fibrous environment, cell shape change, as well as cell replication. We also include elements of cell orientation, or cell polarity, and touch on some aspects of mechanical feedback. We explore some general aspects of developmental biology as well as cancer in mammary ducts. Although we emphasize epithelial cells, which are cells that form monolayers, we also briefly consider migratory cells. The major results are that (1) Cells in a monolayer, like sheets and tubes, need to be both mobile and well-connected to adapt to mechanically stresses, (2) Cells that are not polarized do not produce a stable monolayer of cells, (3) Extracellular support, like a basement membrane, can minimize the stresses experienced at cell-cell junctions, (4) Mitosis triggered by tension can help maintain a monolayer of cells, (5) Cell shape needs to be incorporated into models to minimize undesirable stresses, (6) Our computational framework is useful to predict behavior of cells subjected to mechanical forces. As this is a new model, results are chiefly qualitative, and suggest future work in collaboration with experimentalists to verify and quantitate our results.M.S.Includes bibliographical references (p. 79-81)by Mehdi Doum

    RETHINKING INDUSTRIAL POLICY

    Despite the hold of the neoliberal orthodoxy on policy making in developing countries, industrial policy remains important for the promotion of industrial development. However, the context for the design of industrial policy has profoundly changed as a result of new rules governing international trade, the rise of global value chains and marketing networks, and other aspects of globalization. Traditionally, the case for industrial policy has been framed in terms of “market failures” but the paper argues that that is not a sufficient basis. After addressing the traditional points of criticism, an attempt is made to outline the “domains” of industrial policy in the current circumstances, especially for industrially lagging countries. As country contexts differ widely there are no satisfactory blueprints for policy making that countries can readily adopt. As in production decisions, considerable ingenuity and innovation is needed in designing policies. This is all the more necessary as the WTO rules have become increasingly stringent and the rise of international trading networks has created new barriers for young firms to enter the world market. These developments have changed the context but not the importance of policy in industrial development. The paper identifies areas where government intervention is needed and can still make a positive difference.

    Investigation of the ratio of sternum length to lower and upper extremity sections in adult Turkish men and women

    Sternum göğüs ön duvarının iskeletini oluşturan yassı bir kemik olup göğüs kafesinde yer alan organların korunmasında önemli bir yeri vardır. Arkeolojik ya da adli olgularda kimlik tespitinin yanı sıra birçok cerrahi durumla ilişkili olarak sternum inceleme konusu olabilmektedir. Çalışmamızda sternum toplam uzunluğu ile boy, alt ve üst ekstremite uzunlukları arasındaki ilişki araştırılarak sternum ile ilgili cerrahi işlemler için temel bir veri oluşturulması ve cinsiyet boy gibi ayrımların yapılabilmesi için aralarındaki ilişkinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmamızda yaşları 18-22 arasında, 250 katılımcının (125 erkek ve 125 kadın) sternum, boy, üst ekstremite toplam ve alt kısımları ile alt ekstremite toplam ve alt kısımlarına ait uzunluklar antropometrik noktalar kullanılarak ölçülmüş ve birbirlerine oranlaması yapılmıştır. Çalışmamızda sternum uzunluğunun bireylerin üst ekstremite toplam uzunluğuna (p<0,001), kol uzunluğuna (p=0,004), önkol uzunluğuna (p<0,001), alt ekstremite toplam uzunluğuna(p=0,005) ve uyluk uzunluğuna (p<0,001) oranları cinsiyetler arasında istatiksel olarak anlamı şekilde farklı olduğu bulunmuştur. Ayrıca kadın ve erkek katılımcılar arasında üst ekstremite toplam, kol, önkol, alt ekstremite toplam, uyluk ve ayak yüksekliğine dair uzunlukların boya oranları arasında istatiksel olarak anlamlı farklılıklar gözlenmiştir. Ek olarak, vücut kısımlarının kendi arasındaki oranları incelendiğinde, kadın ve erkek katılımcılar arasında, kol-üst ekstremite toplam, el-üst ekstremite toplam, el-kol, el-önkol, uyluk-alt ekstremite toplam, ayak yüksekliği-alt ekstremite toplam, bacak-uyluk, ayak-uyluk ve ayak-bacak uzunluklarının birbirine oranları arasında istatiksel olarak anlamlı farklılıklar bulunmuştur. Çalışmamız çerçevesinde sternum uzunluğu tek başına cinsiyet tayininde kullanılabilecek bir parametre olarak görülemeyeceği ancak alt ve üst ekstremite ve bunların alt bölümlerine oranlarının cinsiyet tayininde oldukça kuvvetli birer veri olarak değerlendirilebileceği söylenebilir.The sternum is a flat bone that forms the skeleton of the anterior chest wall and has an important place in the protection of the organs located in the rib cage. In addition to identification in archaeological or forensic cases, sternum examination may be the subject of examination in relation to many surgical conditions. In our study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between the total length of the sternum and the lengths of the lower and upper extremities and to create a basic data for the surgical procedures related to the sternum and to evaluate the relationship between them in order to make distinctions such as gender and height. In our study, 250 participants (125 males and 125 females) between the ages of 18 and 22 were proportional to each other by measuring the length of the sternum, height, total and lower extremities and lower extremities and lower extremities. In our study, it was found that the ratios of sternum length to the total length of the upper extremity (p<0,001), arm length (p=0,004), forearm length (p<0,001), lower extremity total length (p=0,005) and thigh length (p<0,001) were statistically significantly different between the sexes. In addition, statistically significant differences were observed between the height ratios of the heights of the upper extremity total, arm, forearm, lower extremity total, thigh and foot height between male and female participants. In addition, when the ratios of body parts between themselves were examined, statistically significant differences were found between the ratios of arm-upper extremity total, hand-upper extremity total, hand-arm, handforearm, thigh-lower extremity total, foot height-lower extremity total, leg-thigh, footthigh and foot-leg lengths between male and female participants. Within the framework of our study, it can be said that sternum length alone cannot be seen as a parameter that can be used in gender determination, but the ratio of lower and upper extremities and their lower parts can be considered as very strong data in gender determination

    Application of the extended discrete element method (XDEM) in the melting of a single particle

    In this contribution, a new method referred to as Extended Discrete Element Method (XDEM) is usedto model melting of a single particle in the fluid media. The XDEM as a Lagrangian-Eulerian framework is the extension of Discrete Element Method (DEM) by considering thermodynamic state such as temperature distribution and is able to link with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for fluid phase. In order to provide more accurate results, multiscale method was used. The model is validated by comparing predicted results with existing experimental data for melting of a single ice particle in a water bath. In addition, the model has the capability to be extended to the packed bed of particles with different size and properties to produce different liquid phases
