The stories behind the stones: How the intangible aspects of architectural heritage can serve as a guiding theme within the design process
This graduation study examined in an exploratory way how the ‘intangible’ aspects of architectural [built] heritage could be made ‘tangible’ by means of an innovative and strategic collaborative or ‘counter-mapping’-based methodology, in order to give the socio-cultural or intangible aspects of architectural heritage a more prominent place in both the evaluation and the design process. The aim of this study was to come up with an innovative and strategic mapping-based toolbox or methodology that will function as a new addition to the existing valuation guidelines. In this way, an attempt was made to contribute to the development of knowledge for a more inclusive, people-centred and participatory way of dealing with heritage (in line with the current societal shift). This study showed a step-by-step method whereby the Plague house in Leiden (a 17th century national monument in the Netherlands) was used as a canvas. The first step of this method consisted of counter-mapping the social meaning of the past by means of a ‘newspaper counter-map’ focusing on the 20th century, and a ‘crossed-history counter-map’ combining archival information from different time layers. The next step of this method consisted of counter-mapping the social meaning of the present. This was done in four (slightly) different ways and by means of four different target groups, namely through:•The combination of a short anonymous and analogue survey and individual counter-mapping assignment with target group 1 (fifteen residents of the nearby ‘Vondellaan’ and ‘Van Baerlestraat’ in Leiden) and target group 3 (three employees of the Naturalis museum, the former function of the Plague house).•A low-key, interactive and participatory stand with anonymous survey questions on pin boards and two collective counter-mapping assignments with target group 2 (about twenty different visitors during the ‘De Buurt’-festival event, held in the Plague house).•A joint and face-to-face dialogue (‘oral history’) about the survey questions and collective counter-mapping assignment with target group 4 (two residents of the Plague house complex). The last step of this method consisted of subsequently ‘linking back’ the data obtained through the counter-mapping of the present to the spatial (physical) elements of the building. This was done on the basis of three different themes:1. Memory / spirit of the place2. Place attachment / spatial qualities 3. Possible changes / suggestionsThe results seemed to imply that this categorisation provided not only a more visual and therefore more practical ‘tangible’ translation, but also an important structure in terms of what the participants would like to see preserved, strengthened or changed. All in all, the results seemed to imply that each of these separate methodological steps could offer the possibility of making the ‘intangible’ aspects of architectural heritage more ‘tangible’. More importantly, however, the results also seemed to indicate that the combination of (the various concluding results from) each of these methodological steps of both the past and the present, due to the merging of these partly corresponding and partly different perspectives, can provide a more comprehensive, inclusive, and in-depth insight into the socio-cultural or ‘intangible’ aspects that can potentially be used as a design narrative or guiding theme.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Explorela

This research was conducted with the aim of analyzing the results of implementing a marketing mix strategy when starting a business, including the marketing process of blooming steamed sponge cake products with the use of mature coconut water and dragon fruit juice. Based on the results of research that has been carried out previously, it is obtained that the product formula with the use of liquid ingredients of mature coconut water and dragon fruit juice is the most preferred with a ratio of 3: 1. The product processing to be marketed was carried out at the Pastry and Bakery Laboratory of the State University of Jakarta within a period of 1 month with a total of 9 product sales processes which had a unit price Rp.3,000. The research method used is a business startup survey method by determining important aspects of sales support such as aspects of business management organization and the target market for product sales, starting from children to the elderly. Determination of the marketing mix consisting of product, price, promotion and place of processing and marketing of blooming steamed sponge cake is taken into account to support marketing. In the sale of products, the color of the product is less striking and it is also found that marketing blooming steamed sponge products with social media results is less optimal than marketing directly by word of mouth. In addition, from determining the 1-month sales turnover target that has been determined, the sales results are obtained with a sales turnover achievement value of 79.2%. Sales results reached Rp. 1,578,000 from the target of Rp. 1,992,000 with 559 products sold from the planning target of 664 pieces sold. The best solution is to improve the marketing process to support the sale of blooming steamed sponge products for the better and the addition of product variations can be done to attract the attention of potential customers
Author-Centered Approaches in ELA Instruction: A Multiple Case Study of Secondary English Teachers
Literary authors are often neglected in secondary ELA (English Language Arts) literary instruction. Teachers are unsure how to teach about the author and how much time to spend on establishing the context for the text when the goal is to “cover” a variety of literary texts as part of a planned curriculum during the school year. Acknowledging the role of authors’ intentions as well as their experiences and aesthetic decisions in the production of literature may provide new entry points into literary texts for students. This multiple-case study of secondary English teachers and their high school students in a “bounded system” of five classroom contexts located in a northeastern public high school is being conducted to analyze how teachers plan and implement curriculum for teaching about the author in literary instruction. Grounded in a framework of Sociocultural theory and Activity theory, this study will examine each classroom as an activity system using multiple data sources such as a teacher questionnaire, student and teacher interviews, observations, and student and teacher documents/artifacts. The following research questions will direct this inquiry: (1) What are secondary English teachers’ thoughts about literary authors and their works? (2) How do secondary English teachers think about literary authors and their works in planning literary instruction? (3) How do secondary English teachers think about literary authors and their works in teaching literary instruction? A central assumption of this study is that how teachers treat the author in instruction has a profound impact on student learning. Findings were that teachers utilized the author as a tool and a resource to teach literature to increase student engagement in support of literacy development, but each teacher responded from their past experiences as learners to form practices in which they displayed varied levels of appropriation of the author and supporting resources. Theoretical and practical implications were that authorial intention, once derogated as unnecessary speculation in literary analysis by the New Critics, was found to be pedagogically useful in teaching about the lived experiences of authors as a way into a literary text; also, from a deconstructionist standpoint, the author was viewed as dead in theory circa 1970, but was found to be pedagogically foundational for teachers. Practical implications were that author-driven professional development and collaboration could be positive sites of foundational change in which the author in literature may be utilized to support culturally-responsive teaching and learning
Labour and Production Relations
In this chapter, the author (Ela Callorda Fossati) first reviews the relevant literature, before introducing gender as a dimension of characterization that is crucial to understanding the functioning of labour and production relations in developing countries. The statistical analysis shows that labour-sector governing institutions are differentiated along three main lines: the extent of decommodification (versus informal labour), the degree of openness and flexibility (versus closed labour force and rigid contracts) and the range of democratic-representative (versus authoritarian-paternalistic) patterns of labour institutionalization. Five distinct labour and production relation governance models are then identified in the 139-country sample. Surprisingly, most emerging economies exhibit liberal or coordinated labour and production relations to some extent similar to what can be observed in mature liberal and coordinated market economies. By contrast, the informal type of labour market governance includes many of the poorest world economies. The other emerging economies exhibit paternalistic or idiosyncratic labour governance models

Cognitive development is a development that shows one's intellectual ability. Cognitive development in children can be improved with the traditional game and we usually called congklak . It is a simple game that trains the cognitive function of the child by knowing the numbers and also training the child's memory. This research aims to determine the influence of the traditional game on counting ability to improve cognitive development in early childhood 4-5 years in TPQ Al-Karbala and TPQ As-Syfa year 2020. The Design of this research uses the design of Quasi-Experimental Design with the approach of pre and post-test with control group design with a sample number of 38 respondents divided into 2 groups with the method probability sampling and using a measuring instrument checklist evaluation. Results showed the results of the sigma (0.000) were smaller than a (0.05) so Ha accepted Ho was rejected. In Conclusion, the results of this study show that there is an influence of cognitive development before and after given the traditional game. Suggestions, the results of this research are expected to be used as a learning media for children in improving cognitive developmen
hook’d on Ebonics and Black Texts: Enacting an Engaged Pedagogy in an 11th Grade ELA Classroom
In this article, the author discusses the process of creating an engaged pedagogy (hooks, 1994), one that prioritized authentic, engaging, and equally rigorous engagement activities that were ongoing preparation for standardized tests and embedded in core ELA instruction. These learning experiences were not only academically necessary, but they were also integral in developing positive racial identity. The author shares three ways to amplify reading instruction that prepares students for skill-based standardized tests and beyond
