Leveraging error correction in voice-based text entry by Talk-and-Gaze
We present the design and evaluation of Talk-and-Gaze (TaG), a method for selecting and correcting errors with voice and gaze. TaG uses eye gaze to overcome the inability of voiceonly systems to provide spatial information. The user’s point of gaze is used to select an erroneous word either by dwelling on the word for 800 ms (D-TaG) or by uttering a “select” voice command (V-TaG). A user study with 12 participants compared D-TaG, V-TaG, and a voice-only method for selecting and correcting words. Corrections were performed more than 20% faster with D-TaG compared to the V-TaG or voice-only methods. As well, D-TaG was observed to require 24% less selection effort than V-TaG and 11% less selection effort than voice-only error correction. D-TaG was well received in a subjective assessment with 66% of users choosing it as their preferred choice for error correction in voice-based text entry
Word Cloud for Meeting: A Visualization System for DHH People in Online Meetings
Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) people have limited access to auditory input, so they mainly receive visual information during online meetings. In recent years, the usability of a system that visualizes the ongoing topic in a conference has been confirmed, but it has not been verified in a remote conference that includes DHH people. One possible reason is that visual dispersion occurs when there are multiple sources of visual information. In this study, we introduce“Word Cloud for Meeting,” a system that generates a separate word cloud for each participant and displays it in the background of each participant’s video to visualize who is saying what. We conducted an experiment with seven DHH participants and obtained positive qualitative feedback on the ease of recognizing topic changes. However, when the topic changed in a sequence, it was found to be distracting. Additionally, we discuss the design implications for visualizing topics for DHH people in online meeting
Smartphone Drum: Gesture-based Digital Musical Instruments Application for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People
Smartphone applications that allow users to enjoy playing musical instruments have emerged, opening up numerous related opportunities. However, it is difficult for deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) people to use these apps because of limited access to auditory information. When using real instruments, DHH people typically feel the music from the vibrations transmitted by the instruments or the movements of the body, which is not possible when playing with these apps. We introduce “smartphone drum,” a smartphone application that presents a drum-like vibrotactile sensation when the user makes a drumming motion in the air with their smartphone like a drumstick. We implemented an early prototype and received feedback from six DHH participants. We discuss the technical implementation and the future of new instruments of vibration
Design and Evaluation of Model-based Optimized Touchscreen Keyboard for Older Adults with Dyslexia
In this work, we focus on developing touchscreen text-entry interfaces, specifically focusing on finding the optimal touchscreen keyboard interface which can capture variation among the older adults with dyslexia. The major contributions of this work are: (1) development of a design space for text-entry interfaces, (2) design and initial evaluation (including model-based simulation) of the keyboard interface suitable for older adults having dyslexia, and (3) observe the effect of the proposed keyboard on able-bodied older adults’ performance compare to the QWERTY layout. In a broader sense, our work serves as an initial attempt to build a psychological foundation that could support the touchscreen text-entry interface design
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Voice Coding Experiences for Developers with Physical Impairments
Purpose
This research explores the current working practices of voice coders with physical impairments and investigates their perceptions of a research prototype utilising a fixed grammar speech coding approach.
Design/methodology/approach
Semi-structured interviews were initially conducted with seven voice coders with physical impairments to understand their development practices, followed by an exploratory user study with five disabled voice coders to obtain their feedback on a fixed grammar voice coding system.
Findings
Interviews provided new insights around the tools voice coders utilise, the need for multimodal coding approaches, as well as experiences in working within mixed ability development teams. Findings from the user evaluation elicited views around the need for distinct monosyllable voice commands, as well as other requirements to support efficient voice coding (e.g., command chaining, intuitive navigation, and custom command definition).
Research limitations/implications
The research was conducted with experienced voice coders which may have influenced perceptions of the voice coding prototype. The system was also evaluated over a single evaluation session, whereas longitudinal research with novice voice coders could also present additional insights.
Practical implications
Further research is required into customisable multimodal voice coding approaches for developers with physical impairments who may have varying levels of experience in coding via alternative methods.
Originality/value
The findings present new insights around the working practices and unique requirements of voice coders with physical impairments and highlights important new avenues for future research
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
