If Brian Aldiss’s novel is often quoted as a reference for Land Art, on the other hand one evokes less often Cryptozoïc, an other novel by the British writer of which Smithson was nevertheless aware. We shall see the tenuous links between the science-fiction author and the work of Smithson, in order to ask what this comparison can bring to the understanding of the mechanisms of land artist’s works

Data from: A new Mississippian tetrapod from Fife, Scotland, and its environmental context

The Visean stage of the Mississippian was a time of rapid tetrapod diversification which marks the earliest appearance of temnospondyls, microsaurs and the limbless aïstopods. Tetrapod finds from this stage are very rare and only a dozen sites are known worldwide. Here we announce the discovery of a new Visean site in Fife, Scotland, of Asbian age, and from it describe a new species of the baphetoid Spathicephalus. These specimens represent the oldest known baphetoid by three million years, yet belong to the most specialized members of the clade. Unlike typical baphetoids with large marginal teeth and palatal fangs characteristic of early tetrapods, spathicephalids had very broad flattened heads with a dentition consisting of a large number of small, uniform teeth. Spathicephalids were probably one of the earliest tetrapod groups to use suction feeding on small, aquatic prey. Palynological and sedimentological analysis indicates that the new fossil bed was deposited in a large, stratified, freshwater lake that became increasingly saline.,Smithson et al. A new Mississippian tetrapod Supporting InformationThe file contains a summary of the palynology of the new site. A list of species is given together with two plates of photomicrographs showing each of the spore species recovered.Smithson et al. A new Mississippian tetrapod Sup Info.docx</span

Lives of Shakespearian actors II : Edmund Kean, Sarah Siddons and Harriet Smithson by their contemporaries

No full text
During the eighteenth century, theatrical writing developed as a genre. The publishing market responded to a seemingly insatiable appetite for accounts of the personalities, social lives and performances of celebrated entertainers. This new series builds on the success of previous "Pickering Lives" series. It features actors who were significant in their development of new and innovative ways of performing Shakespeare. Extracts from diaries, memoirs, private letters, obituaries and other rare ephemera are drawn together to build a contemporary account of their acting achievements and personal lives.Edmund Kean has been considered one of the greatest actors ever to have taken to the stage. His debut at Drury Lane brought the theatre renewed popularity and rescued it from near bankruptcy. He specialized in tragic roles which brought him success on both the English and American stage. Sarah Siddons and Philip Kemble were brother and sister. Siddons was famed for her portrayal of Lady Macbeth while Kemble was most noted for his Roman characters due to his imposing physical presence. Between them they helped to make the stage a more respectable profession, Kemble becoming manager of Covent Garden. Harriet Smithson became the first wife of the composer Hector Berlioz after her success on the Paris stage

Previously in the University eprints HAIRST pilot service at http://eprints.st-andrews.ac.uk/archive/00000367/Article 3 of 6 in issue devoted to the visual culture of the Scandinavian and Baltic region. This article will look at the early works of Estonian architect and artist Jüri Okas and will try to work between diverging languages and interpretations, reading works by Okas against the background of Anglo-american conceptualism and minimalism of the same period. The first part of the paper will analyse a print by Jüri Okas that paraphrases works by the American artist Donald Judd and will try to show how Okas’ concept of minimalism differed from the Western one and the reasons behind it. The second part of the paper will focus on a conceptual book by Jüri Okas, consisting of a series of photographs of everyday and banal architectural objects, and compare it to Rober Venturi’s book on Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture. Finally, a comparison will be made with works of Robert Smithson in the context of concepts of waste, excess and the remainders of industrial civilisationPostprin
