    The Association Between Traumatic Brain Injury, Behavioural Factors and Facial Emotion Recognition Skills in Delinquent Youth

    Objectives: To examine the association between traumatic brain injury (TBI) in delinquent youth and facial emotion recognition (FER) abilities, offending, behavioural difficulties, aggression, empathic sadness and parenting. Participants & Setting: Forty-eight delinquent youth, aged 14 to 19 years, recruited from Youth Offending Teams and Targeted Youth Support. Main Measures: A cross sectional case-control design compared individuals in a TBI versus a non-TBI group on a forced-choice, FER paradigm assessing recognition accuracy to six basic emotions. Self-reported measures of TBI, behavioural difficulties, experience of parenting, reactive and proactive aggression, and empathic sadness. Results: History of TBI was reported by 68.7% of the sample, with 94% including a loss of consciousness. No significant differences were found between TBI and non-TBI groups on FER accuracy. Participants in the TBI group self-reported significantly higher proactive and reactive aggression and lower levels of parental supervision as compared to the non-TBI group. Tendency to incorrectly give ‘anger’ as a response on the FER task was strongly positively associated with proactive and reactive aggression. Conclusions: Future research requires larger samples recruited across settings to further investigate the association between FER abilities and TBI in this population. Findings highlight the need for TBI to be appropriately assessed and managed in delinquent youth, and highlights important aggression differences

    Fluvial organic carbon losses from tropical peatland oil palm plantations in Sarawak, Malaysia

    Currently, there are only very limited estimates of carbon loss from oil palm plantations (OPPs) on tropical peat, with the aquatic fluxes largely unquantified. This thesis presents an annual estimate of exported dissolved (DOC) and particulate (POC) organic carbon from the drainage waters of four OPPs and nearby stands of tropical peat swamp forest (PSF) in Sarawak, Malaysia, subjected to varying degrees of anthropogenic disturbance. Annual total organic carbon (TOC) fluxes (104 ± 19.3 g C m-2 yr-1) from the OPPs explored here are one third larger than those from intact PSFs (63 g C m-2 yr-1) and comparable to fluxes from degraded PSFs (97 g C m-2 yr-1) as reported in the literature. Forest fluxes measured in this project were of a similar magnitude (71.2 ± 11.0 to 84.5 ± 13.1 g C m-2 yr-1), likely as a result of hydrological disturbance from the adjacent plantation drainage system. Qualitative analysis (14C and spectrophotometric analysis) of DOC derived from the OPP land cover revealed that the majority (> 50 %) originates from aged carbon sources (100 – 499 years, BP) and is both labile and highly oxidised, suggesting loss of carbon from long-term stable storage. Extrapolation of the plantation sub-catchment fluxes indicates that industrial peatland OPPs across Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo and Sumatra contribute a combined TOC flux of 3.2 Tg C yr-1. This represents one third of the regional TOC flux (10.4 Tg C yr-1; PSF intact + degraded + industrial OPPs) and suggests a more than two-fold increase in TOC losses since 1990. Overall, this investigation reinforces the importance of considering alternative fluvial carbon loss pathways when assessing the on-going collapse of tropical peatland carbon stores in response to their continued anthropogenic exploitation

    Investigating the role of environmental messaging on Australia's attitudes and intentions towards cultivated seafood

    Our oceans are facing perilous times with climate change and other human impacts negatively altering marine ecosystems. A significant contributor is wild caught and farmed fishing practices which remove hundreds of millions of tonnes of marine biota annually and cause significant pollution; all to feed the increasing human population. Urgent action must be taken to reduce the effects of these impacts. Cultivated seafood is part of the cellular agriculture industry which is currently in the research and development phase to produce novel protein production methods. Cultivated seafood has the potential to significantly reduce wild-caught fish and bycatch numbers from our oceans, as well as reduce the need for aquaculture systems, which are both harmful to our oceans at current scale. Consumer perceptions of cultivated products will play a significant role in the acceptance of novel protein. I conduct the first investigation of consumer perceptions of cultivated seafood using a stratified sample of 1013 Australian consumers. A 2x3 factorial environmental messaging design was used to test participants' attitudes and intentions towards cultivated seafood. Environmental messaging outlined the impacts of wild-caught, farmed, and cultivated seafood production systems. We found that environmental messaging did not influence consumers attitudes and intentions towards cultivated seafood. However, it did have influence on attitudes and intentions to consume wild-caught seafood and farmed seafood. Factors such as nature relatedness, solidarity and seafood consumption were variables which were found to impact attitudes and intentions on cultivated seafood. This supports existing literature where comparisons of food production methods were found to contribute to consumer acceptance. Overall, this study provides a firm starting point for understanding consumer acceptance of cultivated seafood and adds valuable knowledge to consumer messaging theory.</p

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
