The radical right in Europe, between slogans and voting behavior. IHS Political Science Series No. 123, July 2011

    No full text
The paper analyzes the radical right‘s attitudes toward the EU focusing in particular on the level of congruence between the programmatic statements of the central office and the voting behavior of their MEPs. It shows that although radical right parties represent a source of opposition to the EU, within the EP they express their dissent making use of the rules of the game, voting with the opposition more than the other forces do, but voting almost as much with the majority. The party public office in the EP is inserted in the legislative process and even more collusive with the other parties of both sides of the political spectrum than the Eurosceptical rhetoric and statements of central office makes the public believe

SARA: Secure Asynchronous Remote Attestation for IoT systems

    No full text
Remote attestation has emerged as a valuable security mechanism which aims to verify remotely whether or not a potentially untrusted device has been compromised. The protocols of Remote attestation are particularly important for securing Internet of Things (IoT) systems which, due to the large number of interconnected devices and limited security protections, are susceptible to a wide variety of cyber attacks. To guarantee the integrity of a software running on a single device, remote attestation is usually executed as an uninterrupted procedure: at the attestation time, a device stops the normal operation and executes the attestation of the entire device without interruption. The remote attestation protocols that aim to attest a large number of devices also follow the assumption on uninterrupted execution: when a device attests its network neighbours, each device verified in the neighborhood suspends its normal operation until the attestation protocol is completed. To avoid unnecessary suspension of the normal operation of the devices, this paper proposes a novel Secure Asynchronous Remote Attestation (SARA) protocol that releases the constraint of synchronous interaction among devices. In particular, SARA is an attestation protocol that exploits asynchronous communication capabilities among IoT devices in order to attest a distributed IoT service executed by them. SARA verifies both that each IoT device is not compromised (device trustworthiness), and that the exchanged communication data have not maliciously influence the communicating devices (legitimate operations). By tracing the execution order of each service invocation of an asynchronous distributed service, SARA allows each service to collect accurately historical data of its interactions, and transmits asynchronously such historical data to other interacting services. We have implemented and validated SARA through a realistic simulation on the Contiki emulator that demonstrates the functionality and efficiency of our protocol. The results confirm the suitability of SARA for low-end devices

A technology ecosystem for chronic pain: promises, challenges, and future research

    No full text
Being a common, mostly unpredictable, highly personalized manifestation, chronic pain is thought to be one of the most promising conditions in which the use of digital health technologies may boost patient’s engagement and coping. In fact, pain treatment, besides pharmacotherapy, involves non-pharmacotherapeutic management, which may include physical and psychological interventions. Self-monitoring, real-time assessment, timely feedback, treatment options information, social and community support, and connection with a multidisciplinary care team are among the features that can mostly help chronic pain sufferers to enhance disease and comorbidities management and, ultimately, improve their quality of lif

    No full text
The friendship between Gabriele d’Annunzio and Angelo Conti is particularly intense in the years 1894-1900, in the context of Venice. Both of them reflect about Venetian painters and especially Giorgione, whose picture they interpret as an expression of Venetian magnificent life. I analyze the meaning of the form fuoco giorgionesco, also used by Walter Pater in his well-known essay The School of Giorgione. I examine in particular Conti’s references to this text, in order to verify their accuracy. I put forward the hypothesis that, when Conti wrote the monograph Giorgione, his knowledge of the English author was incomplete and came largely from articles published in magazines, from conversations with friends, and from the translation into Italian of only short extracts. I argue that it was unlikely that Conti (and d’Annunzio) had read Pater’s whole work in English, which at the time was little known in Italy

Emergency Medical Services Perception of the Use of Wearables in Patient Management During Mass Casualty Incident Management

    No full text
Objective: This study explored Italian Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals' perceptions regarding a hypothetical wearable device during Mass Casualty Incidents (MCIs), aiming to improve MCI management and patient outcomes. The device includes patient identifier, vital sign monitoring, LED-based triage coding, geolocation, and real-time data transmission. Using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intention to use the device were measured. Methods: An anonymous online survey was distributed to the 67 EMS dispatch centers across Italy. After an introduction to the device, participants answered demographic and TAM-based questions using a seven-point scale. Results: Among the 141 respondents, most were males (60.3%), nurses (66.7%), and reported over 10 years of EMS experience (63.1%); 51.8% had prior MCI response experience. The wearable device was positively rated for improving situational awareness and coordination, with concerns about workflow integration and potential rescue delays. The questionnaire showed high internal reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.96). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) highlighted distinct perceptions between features supporting scene coordination and those enhancing triage accuracy. Conclusions: The study highlights the perceived value of the wearable in improving MCI coordination and situational awareness. However, concerns regarding workflow integration and possible rescue delays warranted further research on real-world application
