From ambient to preserve the cold at ambient to preserve and to exhibit contemporary art: the "pit of snow" of villa Cattolica (SIcily) - Da ambiente per conservare il freddo ad ambiente per conservare ed esporre l'arte contemporanea: la "fossa della neve" di villa Cattolica (SIcilia)
Sino a quando non sono stati inventati i moderni sistemi di refrigerazione, il compito di mantenere temperature basse era demandato a speciali architetture. Nel Meridione d’Italia e in particolare in Sicilia detto compito era affidato alla “fossa della neve”. In generale trattasi di un ambiente ipogeo nel quale veniva conservata la neve, per essere, nella sua maggiore quantità, utilizzata, nella tarda primavera e nella torrida stagione estiva, per la produzione di gelati e bevande fresche. Nella città di Palermo e nelle sue campagne circostanti non vi era palazzo, convento o villa che non possedeva una “fossa della neve”. Infatti numerosi sono i documenti di archivio che ci informano sulla loro presenza, come quella esistente nel convento dei domenicani di Palermo, oppure quella esistente a villa Cattolica, nella contrada di Bagheria, località ubicata a pochi chilometri da Palermo. In questa villa, realizzata dalla trasformazione di una masseria del Seicento, e completata, fra il 1707 e il 1736, dal principe di Cattolica Francesco Bonanno e del Bosco, la “ fossa della neve” è un organismo architettonico formato dalla una grande cisterna, con volta a crociera, poggiante su pilastri e dalla fossa stessa, a sua volta coperta da un’ambiente voltato, cui si accede da una scala, posta nel parterre occidentale, d’ingresso alla villa. La neve, nella Sicilia Occidentale, proveniva dai suoi depositi, posti (a circa sessanta chilometri da Palermo) nelle montagne delle Madonie, ad esempio da Pizzo Carbonara e da Piano della Battaglia. Opportunamente imballata, in grosse balle, con sacchi di tela, paglia e sale grosso, era trasportata su muli fino al porto di Termini Imerese e poi imbarcata e trasportata a Palermo e infine distribuita nelle diverse botteghe, per poi essere venduta e depositata nelle apposite ”fosse”, prima di essere consumata.
Il complesso della “fossa della neve” di villa Cattolica è costituito da una struttura di muratura portante realizzata da blocchi squadrati di bio calcarenite, proveniente dalle locali cave di pietra. Anche le volte, sia della cisterna ipogea d’acqua, sia della stessa “fossa della neve” sono realizzate con blocchi squadrati di bio calcarenite. Le pareti della cisterna idrica sono rivestite da strati di “cocciopesto”, una malta formata da calce e polvere di terracotta, quest’ultima nota, fin dall’antichità, per le sue proprietà isolanti. Le pareti dell’ambiente superiore della “fossa della neve” e della stessa fossa sono rivestite da strati di malte di calce. La “fossa” era separata dal pianerottolo, della scala di accesso, da un infisso. Il sistema ipogeo con le spesse murature e le volte e la presenza di canalizzazione dell’aria, che collegano la cisterna con la “fossa della neve” assicurano all’ambiente di quest’ultima una temperatura inferiore di circa 5°-7° inferiore rispetto alla temperatura esterna. A tutto ciò occorre aggiungere che la temperatura della neve era mantenuta, come già accennato, mediante un idoneo e naturale isolamento termico della stessa neve. Alla grande cisterna confluivano, com’era raccomandato in tutti i trattati di Architettura, soprattutto barocca e tardo barocca, le canalizzazione di raccolta delle acque piovane delle coperture, sia della copertura del corpo centrale di fabbrica, sia dei corpi bassi della villa. Villa Cattolica, dopo alterne vicende è stata restaurata e adibita, dal 1973, a sede del museo d’arte contemporaneo intitolato al pittore Renato Guttuso (nato a Bagheria), uno dei massimi esponenti dell’arte italiana del Novecento. La fossa è stata, da chi scrive, restaurata e resa disponibile ad accogliere una opera d’arte contemporanea. Infatti da pochissimo tempo l’artista Croce Caravella, nell’ambito di una sua esposizione nel Museo Guttuso di villa Cattolica, ha pensato alla “fossa della neve” quale tomba del suo “Grande Guerriero” una scultura –“installazione permanente concepita da Taravella per questo luogo: una grande scultura di 9,00 metri per 3,00, che rappresenta le spoglie calcificate di un corpo gigantesco, archetipo di ogni eroe leggendario, spaccato e corrotto dalla morte ma ancora pieno di un’energia latente che si impone nello spazio, celebrando il mistero del sarcofago e la potenza di ciò che vi resta”.
E proprio all’interno della “ fossa della neve” l’artista Taravella ha deposto, o come afferma lo stesso “ritrovato”, una sua recente opera. Dopo la sistemazione dell’opera d’arte, l’ambiente entro il quale, nel passato, si conservava la neve è comunque rimasto visibile, mentre all’intera “fossa della neve” è stata attribuita una nuova destinazione. La stessa non ha alterato o modificato la preesistente e stratificata materia e figuratività della “fossa della neve” di Villa Cattolica, mentre contribuisce ad alimentare l’attenzione verso il documento-monumento, ma lo pone sotto una nuova luce, un rinnovato interesse. La “fossa della neve” –tomba del “Grande Guerriero” attira oggi tanti turisti, anche se la stessa, per ovvi motivi, è difficilmente visitabile da persone con deficit motorio, ma una istallazione video, che racconti sia l’antica funzione della fossa e la sua nuova, potrebbe rendere, per quante più persone possibile, più facile ed accattivante il suo contemporaneo uso e assicurare la sua stessa conservazione.Since they were invented modern refrigeration systems, the task of maintaining low temperatures was delegated to special architectures. In the city of Palermo and its surrounding countryside there was no palace, convent or villa that did not have a "pit of snow." In the villa Cattolica (built between 1707-1736) of Bagheria, village near Palermo, there is a "pit of snow." It is an architectural structure formed by a large cistern, with a cross vault, resting on pillars and the pit itself, in turn covered by an environment turned, which is accessed by a ladder, placed in the western parterre entrance to the villa. The complex of villa Cattolica has been restored and turned into a home of contemporary art museum dedicated to the painter Renato Guttuso, one of the leading exponents of Italian art of the twentieth century. The "pit of snow" by villa Cattolica has also been restored and to receive the work of the contemporary artist Croce Taravella, depicting the "Big Warrior". The "pit of snow" - the tomb of the "Big Warrior" today attracts many tourists, although the same, for obvious reasons, it is difficult to visit by people with motor deficit, but a video installation, which is the ancient tales function of the pit and its new, it could make for as many people as possible, easier and more attractive its contemporary use and ensure its own preservation
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Geology and geophysics at the archeological park of Vulci (central Italy)
The Vulci archeological site was object of interest by the Soprintendenza
ai beni culturali dell’Etruria meridionale (Italian government
department responsible for southern Etruria’s cultural heritage) since
the beginning of the 20th century. In 2001, the Ministero dei Beni Culturali
(Italian ministry of cultural heritage) along with the local authorities,
opened a natural-archeological park. In this area, it lies most
of the ancient Etruscan city of Velch (today known by its Latin name,
Vulci) including the Osteria Necropolis that is the object of this study.
Recently, new archaeological excavations were made and the local authorities
needed major geological information about the volcanic lithotypes
where the Etruscans used to build their necropolis. The aim of
this study is to define the geological and geophysical characteristics of
the rock lithotypes present in the Vulci park. For this purpose, a geological
map of the area (1:10000) has been realized. Moreover, two different
geophysical methods were applied: measurements of magnetic
susceptibility and electrical resistivity tomography. Magnetic susceptibility
analyses clearly identify magnetic contrasts between different
lithotypes; the characteristics of the pyroclastic flow that originated
the Sorano unit 2 and its vertical facies variations are well recorded by
this parameter that along with lithostratigraphic observations provides
information about the depositional conditions. Two electrical resistivity
tomographies were performed, which show the Sorano unit 2 thickness
to be of c. 7 m with resistivity values ranging from 200 to 400
Ω·m. This kind of multidisciplinary approach resulted to be suitable
to study this type of archaeological sites, revealing that areas characterized
by a relevant thickness and wide areal extension of volcanic
lithotypes can be a potential site where Etruscans might have excavated
their necropolis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Joining multiple AEM datasets to improve accuracy, cross calibration and derived products: The Spiritwood VTEM and AeroTEM case study
Airborne time-domain electromagnetic methods (AEM) are useful for hydrogeological mapping
due to their rapid and extensive spatial coverage and high correlation between measured magnetic
fields, electrical conductivity, and relevant hydrogeological parameters. However, AEM data, preprocessing
and modelling procedures can suffer from inaccuracies that may dramatically affect the
final interpretation. We demonstrate the importance and the benefits of advanced data processing
for two AEM datasets (AeroTEM III and VTEM) collected over the Spiritwood buried valley aquifer
in southern Manitoba, Canada. Early-time data gates are identified as having significant flightdependent
signal bias that reflects survey flights and flight lines. These data are removed from
inversions along with late time data gates contaminated by apparently random noise. In conjunction
with supporting information, the less-extensive, but broader-band VTEM data are used to construct
an electrical reference model. The reference model is subsequently used to calibrate the AeroTEM
dataset via forward modelling for coincident soundings. The procedure produces calibration factors
that we apply to AeroTEM data over the entire survey domain. Inversion of the calibrated data
results in improved data fits, particularly at early times, but some flight-line artefacts remain.
Residual striping between adjacent flights is corrected by including a mean empirical amplitude
correction factor within the spatially constrained inversion scheme. Finally, the AeroTEM and
VTEM data are combined in a joint inversion. Results confirm consistency between the two different
AEM datasets and the recovered models. On the contrary, joint inversion of unprocessed or
uncalibrated AEM datasets results in erroneous resistivity models which, in turn, can result in an

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
