    BiVO<sub>4</sub> Fern Architectures: A Competitive Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

    The development of high‐performance anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) is currently subject to much interest. In this study, BiVO₄ fern architectures are introduced as a new anode material for LIBs. The BiVO₄ fern shows an excellent reversible capacity of 769 mAh g⁻¹ (ultrahigh volumetric capacity of 3984 mAh cm⁻³) at 0.12 A g⁻¹ with large capacity retention. A LIB full cell is then assembled with a BiVO₄ fern anode and LiFePO₄ (LFP, commercial) as cathode material. The device can achieve a capacity of 140 mAh g⁻¹ at 1C rate, that is, 81 % of the capacity of the cathode and maintained to 104 mAh g⁻¹ at a high rate of 8C, which makes BiVO₄ a promising candidate as a high‐energy anode material for LIBs.Deepak P.     Ag:BiVO(4) dendritic hybrid-architecture for high energy density symmetric supercapacitors

    We demonstrate the fabrication of Ag:BiVO₄ with a dendritic architecture by a template free hydrothermal method. Then, symmetric cells based on Ag:BiVO4 electrodes were assembled which exhibit an extended voltage window of up to 1.6 V with an excellent energy density of 2.63 mW h cm−3 (38.43 W h kg−1) and a power density of 558 mW cm−3 (8.1 kW kg−1).Santosh S.     Asymmetric supercapacitor was fabricated successfully using cerium (Ce) doped NiO as positive electrode and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as negative electrode in aqueous KOH electrolyte. Initially, Ce doped nickel oxide nanostructures were synthesized by simple Sol‐Gel method. To investigate the effect of Ce doping in nickel oxide, different molar percentages of cerium with respect to nickel were incorporated. Among the different compositions, 1%Ce:NiO exhibits high specific capacitance and excellent electrochemical activities. Further, asymmetric supercapacitor based on 1%Ce:NiO and rGO was fabricated which could be cycled reversibly in the high‐voltage range of 0 to 1.4 V and displays intriguing performances with a specific capacitance of 110 F/g at a scan rate of 5 mV/s with a maximum energy density of 26.27 Wh/kg (based on the total mass of active materials, 0.78 mg).     Evolution of enzyme catalysts caged in biomimetic gel-shell beads

    Natural evolution relies on the improvement of biological entities by rounds of diversification and selection. In the laboratory, directed evolution has emerged as a powerful tool for the development of new and improved biomolecules, but it is limited by the enormous workload and cost of screening sufficiently large combinatorial libraries. Here we describe the production of gel-shell beads (GSBs) with the help of a microfluidic device. These hydrogel beads are surrounded with a polyelectrolyte shell that encloses an enzyme, its encoding DNA and the fluorescent reaction product. Active clones in these man-made compartments can be identified readily by fluorescence-activated sorting at rates &gt;107 GSBs per hour. We use this system to perform the directed evolution of a ?phosphotriesterase (a bioremediation catalyst) caged in GSBs and isolate a 20-fold faster mutant in less than one hour. We thus establish a practically undemanding method for ultrahigh-throughput screening that results in functional hybrid composites endowed with evolvable protein components

    Leukemic gingival enlargement: a report of two cases

    Most of the systemic diseases manifest signs and symptoms in oral cavity. Periodontal lesions are common in patients with acute leukemia throughout the course of the disease. Although many cases of gingival enlargement in patients with acute myeloid leukemia have been reported in literature, cases of gingival hypertrophy secondary to acute lymphoblastic leukemia in adult female are rare. This is a case report of gingival enlargement in acute lymphoblastic leukemia along with a case of gingival enlargement in patient with acute myeloid leukemia

    Solid-state-reaction Synthesis of Nanoscale Materials: Strategies and Applications

    Nanomaterials (NMs) with unique structures and compositions can give rise to exotic physicochemical properties and applications. Despite the advancement in solution-based methods, scalable access to a wide range of crystal phases and intricate compositions is still challenging. Solid-state reaction (SSR) syntheses have high potential owing to their flexibility toward multielemental phases under feasibly high temperatures and solvent-free conditions as well as their scalability and simplicity. Controlling the nanoscale features through SSRs demands a strategic nanospace-confinement approach due to the risk of heat-induced reshaping and sintering. Here, we describe advanced SSR strategies for NM synthesis, focusing on mechanistic insights, novel nanoscale phenomena, and underlying principles using a series of examples under different categories. After introducing the history of classical SSRs, key theories, and definitions central to the topic, we categorize various modern SSR strategies based on the surrounding solid-state media used for nanostructure growth, conversion, and migration under nanospace or dimensional confinement.     Intraoral desmoplastic fibroblastoma: A rare presentation

    Desmoplastic fibroblastoma is an uncommon fibrous soft tissue tumor. Only a few cases have been reported in the literature till date. These slow growing, painless mass is most commonly seen in the upper extremities, but rarely in the head and neck region. This article presents a case report of a 45-year-old female who presented with a similar soft tissue mass in the oral cavity. The mass was excised and sent for histopathological evaluation, which confirmed the diagnosis as desmoplastic fibroblastoma

    Efficacy of pentoxifylline in the management of oral submucous fibrosis

    Aim: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a high risk premalignant condition predominantly seen in the Indian subcontinent. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of newer drug pentoxifylline in the management of OSMF. Materials and Methods: A total of 106 subjects with clinic-pathologically diagnosed OSMF were included in the study and divided equally in two groups, Group A (pentoxifylline group) and Group B (placebo group). Group A was administered 400 mg pentoxifylline twice daily and Group B was given multivitamins for 3 months. Evaluation for different clinical parameters was done at regular intervals and data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. P < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: The patients in Group A showed significant improvement (P < 0.05) in all the parameters measured, mouth opening, tongue protrusion, pain associated with the condition, burning sensation and difficulty in speech and swallowing. However, few patients from Group A complained of bloating, nausea, anxiety and dyspepsia. Conclusion: Pentoxifylline can bring about significant clinical improvements in the symptoms like mouth opening and tongue protrusion, thereby improving the quality of life of the affected individuals

    Oral changes in pregnant and nonpregnant women: A case-control study

    Aim: The numerous changes occurring during pregnancy affect every body system, resulting in localized physical alterations in almost all parts of the body, including the oral cavity. The aim of the present study was to find the incidence of oral conditions seen particularly in the pregnant women than in the nonpregnant women. Materials and Methods: The oral health condition of 120 pregnant women referred to the outpatient department of Jodhpur Dental College General Hospital from a gynecology clinic were examined and compared with 120 nonpregnant women. The pregnant women were divided in a 3 groups of 40 each, according to the stage of pregnancy. The common oral conditions seen during pregnancy were assessed. Results: Pregnant women had a higher incidence of gingivitis and pyogenic granuloma. Gingivitis and erosion of teeth due to vomiting was seen commonly in the 3 rd trimester. The results indicated that pregnancy had an effect on the oral condition, which was mainly due to the hormonal changes seen during this period rather than other factors. Conclusion: Women planning a pregnancy or those already pregnant should be informed about the role of oral health during pregnancy and the possible outcomes of these conditions for the welfare of their foetus. They should be referred to the dental clinician for necessary counselling for preventive oral self-care and treatment, if required
