Daughter of fortune: Isabel Allende's popularity from a readership perspective
The primary aim of this thesis is to explore and critically interrogate Isabel Allende’s popularity cross-culturally in Britain and Spain. It analyses readers’ responses to Allende’s works as well as the discourses surrounding her public representation, an approach that is ‘readerly’ but must also take account of production and text. This approach is intended to further the understanding of Allende’s work which so far has always been analysed from a textual perspective. However, the relationship between Allende’s popularity, her texts, public representation and readers has not been yet analysed in detail.This thesis is innovative in other ways too. Methodologically, it approaches readers through the under studied cultural form of the reading group. It also incorporates a comparative dimension by looking at the reception of Allende in two different cultural contexts: the British and Spanish respectively. Finding out about Allende’s popularity has involved asking readers about their reading experiences as well as analysing the production of discourses around her public representation. Paul Ricoeur’s (1984, 1988) perspective on authorial intentions and readers’ responses to texts helps in understanding the intricacies surrounding what is involved in reading any text. It draws attention to Allende’s and her publishers’ authorial strategies, her ‘strategies of persuasion’ and the specificity of the lives and contexts of British and Spanish reading publics. Equally, this ‘readerly’ approach draws on feminist audience research and primarily on the work of Ien Ang and Janice Radway. Their work with viewers and readers respectively is particularly useful in establishing and developing methodological parameters for the study of reading groups. O Colégio Casa de Nossa Senhora em Santos-SP (1933-1947): os caminhos da educação primária e profissionalizante
Esta pesquisa se filia à linha de pesquisa Instituições Educacionais, História, Política e Processos de Gestão. Nesta linha se insere o ¿ Laboratório de Informação, Arquivo e Memória da Educação (Liame), onde se desenvolveu este trabalho, que busca compreender o ensino primário e profissionalizante em Santos/SP (1933-1947), realizado pelas Missionárias de Jesus Crucificado, uma congregação religiosa fundada por d. Francisco Campos Barreto e Maria Villac, em Campinas/SP, em 1928. O interesse do presente estudo é dar a conhecer a importância do trabalho com a educação primária e profissionalizante das referidas missionárias em Santos, pioneiro na época em que foi realizado. Pela íntima correlação, a pesquisa objetiva tratar conjuntamente da atividade em favor do estrato da sociedade a que se dedicavam e da história da congregação, desde sua origem em Campinas, e o ensino primário e profissionalizante oferecido pelo Colégio Casa de Nossa Senhora, fundado e dirigido por elas no período de 1933 a 1947, em Santos/SP. Os objetivos específicos consistirão em pontuar alguns aspectos da história dessa congregação em Campinas, além do contexto da cidade e do nascimento da instituição, e sua expansão territorial. Pretendo mais; identificar os caminhos da educação primária e profissionalizante oferecidos pelo Colégio Casa de Nossa Senhora e o contexto da cidade e dos institutos religiosos no Brasil; destacar as práticas educativas realizadas nesse colégio e sua particular cultura escolar. Pesquisaram-se as fontes da congregação; dialogando com elas, o que se pretendeu foi conhecer a regra, as diretrizes, e a origem desta instituição. A partir deste levantamento documental, encontrar evidências que revelassem práticas educativas e a atuação das missionárias no campo da educação em Santos/SP. A problemática é compreender qual a importância do trabalho com a educação primária e profissionalizante das Missionárias de Jesus Crucificado em Santos. Metodologicamente, esta pesquisa se enquadrou no campo da História da Educação, com o recorte temático na área das Instituições Escolares, tendo como base a pesquisa documental e a bibliográfica. Isto permitiu análises e interpretações das fontes. O levantamento de livros de ata, de livros tombo, além da história contada pela própria instituição. A documentação pesquisada mostrou que, através do Colégio Casa de Nossa Senhora, as missionárias realizaram um trabalho educacional e social reconhecido pela sociedade santista. Esta notabilidade social evidencia os traços da cultura escolar transmitida através de disciplina, matérias, normas e ritos. Tais práticas educativas contribuíram para alcançar o objetivo da formação de alunos cidadãos, conscientes de sua responsabilidade social. A partir destas perspectivas, as categorias que permearam toda a pesquisa foram a Igreja, o Estado, a sociedade e a educação. Tomando estas categorias como norteadoras da pesquisa, foram analisados, em âmbito nacional, os contextos da história da educação, da política e da Igreja, ao longo do período estudado (1933-1947).This research is part of the research line Educational Institutions, History, Politics and Management Processes. In this line is inserted the ¿ Laboratory of Information, Archive and Memory of Education (Liame), where this work was developed, which seeks to understand the primary and professional education in Santos/SP (1933-1947), carried out by the Missionaries of Jesus Crucified, a religious congregation founded by d. Francisco Campos Barreto and Maria Villac, in Campinas/SP, in 1928. The interest of this study is to raise awareness of the importance of working with primary and professional education for the aforementioned missionaries in Santos, a pioneer at the time it was carried out. Due to the intimate correlation, the research aims to jointly address the activity in favor of the stratum of society to which they were dedicated and the history of the congregation, since its origin in Campinas, and the primary and vocational education offered by Colégio Casa de Nossa Senhora, founded and directed by them in the period from 1933 to 1947, in Santos/SP. The specific objectives will consist of pointing out some aspects of the history of this congregation in Campinas, in addition to the context of the city and the birth of the institution, and its territorial expansion. I want more; identify the paths of primary and professional education offered by Colégio Casa de Nossa Senhora and the context of the city and religious institutes in Brazil; highlight the educational practices carried out in this school and its particular school culture. The sources of the congregation were researched; dialoguing with them, what was intended was to know the rule, the guidelines, and the origin of this institution. From this documental survey, find evidence that reveals educational practices and the role of the missionaries in the field of education in Santos/SP. The problem is to understand the importance of working with the primary and professional education of the Missionaries of Jesus Crucified in Santos. Methodologically, this research was framed in the field of History of Education, with a thematic approach in the area of School Institutions, based on documentary and bibliographical research. This allowed for analysis and interpretations of the sources. The survey of minutes and books tombo, in addition to the story told by the institution itself. The researched documentation showed that, through the Colégio Casa de Nossa Senhora, the missionaries carried out an educational and social work recognized by the society of Santos. This social notability highlights the traces of the school culture transmitted through discipline, subjects, norms and rites. Such educational practices contributed to achieving the goal of training citizen students, aware of their social responsibility. From these perspectives, the categories that permeated the entire research were the Church, the State, society and education. Taking these categories as guidelines for the research, the contexts of the history of education, politics and the Church throughout the period studied (1933-1947) were analyzed nationwide.Universidade Católica de Santos - Católica de Santo
O bibliotecário e a biblioteca: estudo da percepção da atuação do profissional da informação na biblioteca da Escola Estadual Santa Isabel no município de Santa Isabel do Rio Negro
This paper aims to understand the perception of the school library and the librarian among students at Santa Isabel State School in the municipality of Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, Amazonas state. The research is grounded in the importance of the librarian's role as an information mediator and agent of transformation within the school context, reinforcing their support in the teaching-learning process and promoting access to knowledge. The study adopts a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach, based on literature review and surveys conducted with 22 elementary school students. Findings indicate that students view the library as a space for silence, study, and learning, albeit with limited and sporadic usage tied to academic demands. The image of the librarian, though less directly mentioned, emerges implicitly as a facilitator of information access and school-related activities. Analysis also underscores the active presence of the librarian as crucial in transforming the library into a dynamic, interactive, and culturally relevant environment. It is concluded that enhancing the school library's role requires greater recognition of the librarian's pedagogical partnership and emphasizes information mediation as a fundamental process in knowledge construction.Este trabalho tem como objetivo compreender a imagem da biblioteca escolar e do bibliotecário na percepção dos estudantes da Escola Estadual Santa Isabel no município de Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, no estado do Amazonas. A pesquisa se fundamenta na importância da atuação do profissional bibliotecário como mediador da informação e agente de transformação no contexto escolar, reforçando seu papel no apoio ao processo de ensino-aprendizagem e na promoção do acesso ao conhecimento. O estudo parte de uma abordagem qualitativa, de natureza exploratória e descritiva, com base em revisão de literatura e aplicação de questionários a 22 estudantes do ensino fundamental. Os dados indicam que os alunos reconhecem a biblioteca como um espaço de silêncio, estudo e aprendizado, embora muitos relatem um uso limitado e esporádico, condicionado a demandas escolares. A imagem do bibliotecário, embora menos mencionada diretamente, aparece de forma implícita como um facilitador no acesso à informação e apoio às atividades escolares. A análise também revelou que a presença ativa do bibliotecário é essencial para transformar a biblioteca em um ambiente dinâmico, interativo e culturalmente relevante. Conclui-se que, para fortalecer o papel da biblioteca escolar, é necessário ampliar o reconhecimento do trabalho do bibliotecário como parceiro pedagógico além de destaca a mediação da informação como um processo fundamental na construção do conhecimento.3Si

Isabel dos Santos e os vínculos transnacionais da elite angolana: a questão da agência no estudo das relações internacionais
The “Luanda Leaks” disclosure exposed the business network that supported the Angolanelite’s fortune. This article analyzes the agent role assumed by Global South elites in thepublic and private domains. To do so, it would be based on the methodology of Kleemansand Van de Bunt’s (1999) social networks analysis, highlighting the interconnectionsbetween the Angolan elite actors based on Isabel dos Santos. The conclusions in this articleconfirm the elites’ role as builders of a transnational articulation that formed the financialempire of which Isabel dos Santos was part of.La difusión del “Luanda Leaks” expone una red empresarial que apoya la fortuna de la éliteangoleña. Este artículo analiza el papel de agente asumido por las élites del Sur Global enámbitos público y privado. The Paradox of Isabel dos Santos State Capitalism, Dynastic Politics, and Gender Hostility in a Resource-Rich, Authoritarian Country
Throughout the world, the sons and daughters of many state leaders attract media
attention for their exploits. Like other famous children of politicians, Isabel dos Santos,
the daughter of José Eduardo dos Santos, the former president of Angola (1979-2017), is
the object of much media scrutiny regarding her investments and lavish spending habits.
We rely on a systematic study of newspaper articles by Angolan and international media,
readers’ comments, social media and websites to examine the conflicting portrayals of
Isabel from 2010 to 2018. This period covers celebratory depictions of Isabel during the
growth of her business empire to her dismissal as head of Sonangol after her father left
the presidency. We argue that the change in portrayals of Isabel over time offers insight
into the dimensions of dynastic politics in authoritarian settings. Whereas her position
as wealthy presidential daughter ironically reinforced patriarchal political oligarchy, her
