Language: The "Ultimate Artifact"
The first part of this article will introduce to worldviews from an ecocognitive
and semiophysical perspective, also taking advantage of the intermediate
concepts of cosmovision and of abduction in their relationship with language and
knowledge. The concept of natural language and of its function in building worldviews
can be usefully deepened taking advantage of Thom’s catastrophe theory. The
concepts of catastrophe theory are difficult but we think they are rewarding, because
they permit us to first of all grasp the naturalness of natural language as an ordinary
semiophysical process. Furthermore, in the framework of catastrophe theory,
also thanks to the key concepts of salience and pregnance, together with the role of
abductive cognition it will appear easy to understand the problem of the emergence
of language, vocal and written language as a “tool”, the role of abduction in language
acquisition and, also taking advantage of perspectives related to the theory of
extended mind and of distributed cognition, the status of language as an “ultimate
arfifact” to encapsulate worldview
Más allá de los datos: la transformación digital del museo tradicional
This work focuses on the virtual museum, understood as the digital transformation of the traditional museum. First, the main conceptualizations of the virtual museum in the specialized literature are reviewed, and based on them, we propose a basic definition. Furthermore, we argue in favor of the insufficiency of the dataist perspective in the study of epistemic injustice associated with the virtual museum. Finally, the exclusion related to the participation and interaction between a museum’s visitors and the institution is analyzed.
Abduction as a Mode of Inference in Science Education
The central argument of this article is that abduction as a “mode of inference” is a key element in the nature of scientists’ science and should consequently be introduced in school science. Abduction generally understood as generation and selection of hypotheses permits to articulate the classical scientific contexts of discovery and justification and provides educational insights into scientific methodology, this being a particularly important issue in science teaching. However, abductive reasoning has been marginally treated in the philosophy of science until relatively recently; accordingly, we deem it important to perform an “archaeology” of the concept that considers C. S. Peirce’s seminal contributions. We also choose to review contemporary treatments in order to recognise useful classifications to support more meaningful ways of teaching science and the nature of science. An elucidation of the participation of abductive inferences in knowledge construction seems necessary for us to derive conceptual input for the understanding and design of explanations in school science. Some prospective examples of “school scientific abduction” are discussed in the article through the lens of the results of our theoretical analysis.Fil: Aduriz Bravo, Agustin. Horror Vacui: Characterizing the Experience of Paradigm Crisis Through Magnani’s EC-Model of Abduction
This work pays tribute to the work of Professor Magnani by analyzing and applying his Eco-Cognitive Abduction Model (also known as the EC-Model) to introduce axiological values’ role in the generation of scientific hypotheses. For this purpose, the cognitive dimension of the researcher is proposed in this work as a complementary factor to better understand the scientific paradigm shift. In particular, it is assumed that the experience of discovering a surprising fact that neither current theories nor methodologies can account for generates a state of radical ignorance that can provoke in the agent the emotion of anguish in the face of the imperative need to find a solution. Faced with ignorance as the only available evidence of the fact that triggers anguish, the agent’s abducted hypotheses will be much more fragile than usual because they contain very distant elements, which will imply a more significant commitment to the interpretation of the scientific discipline involved, as well as to the agent’s own vision of how the paradigm should be understood. This fragility, however, does not undermine the process but revitalizes the discipline in crisis with novel proposals that motivate suggestive new lines of investigation.Alger Sans Pinillos was supported by the “Generación D” initiative, Red.es, Ministerio para la Transformación Digital y de la Función Pública, for talent attraction (C005/24-ED CV1), funded by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU program through the PRTR.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Ethical prompting: toward strategies for rapid and inclusive assistance in dual-use AI systems
Monitoring technologies initially developed for individuals with disabilities carry inherent dual-use risks, especially evident in conflict or emergency scenarios. This article examines the dual-use dilemma posed by technologies whose civilian design objectives can unintentionally facilitate harmful applications in defense contexts. Specifically, we analyze the ethical risks associated with using civilian-generated data and systems, originally intended to enhance care and assistance, for military purposes without adequate safeguards. We argue that effective and ethically sound technological infrastructures require optimized and ethically-informed prompting strategies. These strategies must clearly define how data and system prompts are structured, reducing deployment biases, particularly against vulnerable populations. The author(s) declare that financial support was received for the research and/or publication of this article. El lado epistemológico de las abducciones: La creatividad en las verdades-proyectadas
In this article I try to show that the epistemological component of abductions is creativity and, to do so, I will use an analysis of Thagard's concept of projected-truth as well as reflections on Łukasiewicz's creativity. In the third part I present a real case, using Thagard's theory and introducing Hanson, to make the transition from logical and computational discourse to philosophy of science. At the end I will address one of the current challenges in order to explain creativity namely the necessary and absolute interaction of each thinking subject, and therefore creative in action, with everything around him. To do this, I intend to introduce Feyerabend into the debate, which cleverly analyzes and dismantles the individualist idea of creatio
