    Computing the Goodwillie-Taylor tower for discrete modules

    A functor from finite sets to chain complexes is called atomic if it is completely determined by its value on a particular set. We present a new resolution for these atomic functors, which allows us to easily compute their Goodwillie polynomial approximations. By a rank filtration, any functor from finite sets to chain complexes is built from atomic functors. Computing the linear approximation of an atomic functor is a classic result involving partition complexes. Robinson constructed a bicomplex, which can be used to compute the linear approximation of any functor. Multidisciplinary out-patient treatment with monitoring by telemedicine for a large-volume multifocal pyogenic liver abscess in times of the pandemic. Clinical Case Reports . 2021;9(10): e04970.Pyogenic liver abscesses represent one of the rarer, but potentially life-threatening diseases of the liver. The treatment for large-volume liver abscesses is usually multimodal with percutaneous drainage combined with several days of treatment in hospital. We are presenting a report on a male patient with type-2 diabetes mellitus who suffered from a multifocal liver abscess (>10 cm). Due to the exceptional situation caused by the corona pandemic, the patient was treated conservatively with non-standard treatment which involved a multidisciplinary team and out-patient visits. Follow-up to ensure the treatment would be successful was carried through dialogue with the GP responsible for the patient's care, as well as daily telemedicine visits. The daily telemedicine visits were supplemented by episodic follow-up testing of laboratory values and contrast-enhanced ultrasound scans (CEUS) of the liver. We show that purely conservative therapy can be successful in a case with a high risk of mortality by using a combination of close telemedical monitoring and proactive interdisciplinary collaboration with the GP

Curiously, leading critics of the Supreme Court\u27s approach have not taken issue with neutrality itself, but instead have argued that the Court has adopted the wrong sort of neutrality principle. In this Article, the author argues that neutrality of any stripe will be insufficient to vindicate the critics\u27 own vision because of a difficulty called the problem of symmetry. Liberty, by contrast, is asymmetrical and consequently it delivers more attractive outcomes in real cases. The author proposes a liberty rule, describes how it would work, and defends it against anticipated objections

This review is more of a snapshot of the lengthy dialogue I have been engaged in for several months with Nelson Tebbe, the author of the book being reviewed. The symposium conference organized by the St. John’s Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development in September 2016, invited several church-state scholars to comment on a draft manuscript of Nelson Tebbe’s forthcoming book, Religious Freedom in an Egalitarian Age. However, the book was not fully completed when this multi-participant dialogue began

    The No Child Left Behind legislation brought about a flurry of conversations regarding student achievement (McElroy, 2006). Increased use of standardized testing to measure student achievement has resulted in a discussion of teaching models. Is the transmission teaching model with its expository style the only mode to insure student success? Or is the constructivist teaching model with its inquiry style a mode that better leads to student success? This review of literature examines the instructional practices involved in problem based learning, a constructivist approach. The paper focuses on the components of problem-based learning, the benefits and challenges of using this.approach, and whether problem-based learning is an appropriate educational method for adolescents. The literature review is based on the following research questions: 1. What is problem-based learning? 2. What are the benefits of problem-based learning? 3. What are the challenges of problem-based learning? 4. How does problem-based learning meet the developmental needs of adolescents? Based on the literature review, the author found that positive results, namely, improved academic achievement and social interactions, indicate that problem-based learning is an effective instructional model

    AbstractHigh thermomechanical loads in drilling of titanium alloys often cause significant alterations of the subsurface properties which are mostly connected to a degradation of the fatigue life of high dynamically loaded components. In the present study different drilling processes (conventional-, orbital- and vibration drilling), lubrication conditions (dry, MQL) and states of tool wear have been investigated regarding their influence on the subsurface properties of TiAl6V4. It was found that tensile residual stresses and increased hardness (result of severe plastic deformation) can be avoided if the process temperature and chip extraction are controlled

    A Classroom Management Model and Activities for Developing Self-Responsibility in the Elementary School

    One major goal of education is to nurture students who can take responsibility for their continued growth. In meeting this goal, educators must develop responsible problem solvers for society. This project establishes a classroom management model and activities for elementary teachers to use in setting up programs in their classrooms for developing self-responsibility in their students. Classroom management models, teacher effectiveness, and student characteristics were researched in developing the model and activities presented in Chapter III and IV. In order for teachers to develop responsible problem solvers, the research indicated certain teacher behaviors were needed. Also, the research demonstrated that a student\u27s positive self-concept along with the acceptance of responsibilities for self increased the students engaged learning time in the classroom, thereby increasing proficiency in learning. Self-responsibility was found to involve both self-reinforcement and self-management. This author then began to work from a conceptual base of a classroom management program to initiate strategies for the development of self-responsible students in the cognitive, affective and psychomotor areas. It is believed the management program and strategies are educationally sound because they offer elementary teachers appropriate ways to measure the development of self-responsibility in individual children. An elementary classroom that uses classroom management techniques and provides an environment that encourages student self-responsibility will be able to insure the emergence of responsible problem solvers
