Sandgren: Salishan Gallery Talk
This informally taped video captures a clear audio track of the reception and gallery talk at the Salishan Gallery, Gleneden Beach on 29 November 1986. Erik and Nelson Sandgren offer back-to-back introductory talks at their joint exhibition. The video conveys particularly well the flavor of Nelson's gallery talks as he describes his basic approach to watercolor, visual art and painting with humor and succinct clarity - in part as response to audience commentary and questions. The exhibition "Paintings by Nelson Sandgren and Erik Sandgren" comprised their work in the medium of watercolor and ran thru 8 January 1987. The Salishan Gallery was a coveted venue for Northwest artists for over two decades. Salishan Lodge hospitality for exhibiting artists and guests was legendary in an architectural setting designed by John Storrs which incorporated significant works by Northwest artists throughout. Exhibition flyer and related Salishan exhibitions are included in PNAA holdings for Nelson and Olive Sandgren
Improved polyimide/metal adhesion by chemical modification approaches.
To increase their adhesion to silver, polyimide (PI) surfaces were modified by sulfonation reactions by means of different experimental procedures. The results of these modification reactions were analyzed in terms of the variation of the surface chemical composition examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Long-time reactions were also followed by monitoring the increase in weight of the PI films. Changes in the total surface free energy were evaluated by contact angle measurements with the sessil drop method. The influence of the modification reactions on silver/PI adhesion was estimated by means of a 180° peeling test according to ASTM standards. Finally, the effect of chemical modification on film roughness was investigated by means of atomic force microscopy. The results obtained showed that a net improvement, that is, over the maximum rate according to the reference ASTM test, was attained via both the gaseous SO3 and concentrated H2SO4 procedures, with the latter procedure more effective in the presence of silver sulfate as a catalyst. However, the former was judged more convenient because of the low amount of reagents used and the simplicity of cleaning operations. Interestingly, optimum adhesion levels were attained after only very low contact times with all sulfonating agents, that is, after about 30 s. These results were compared with the effects on PI/silver adhesion of traditional etching procedures with KOH aqueous solutions at different temperatures. In this case, good adhesion was observed only after longer reaction times, that is, on the order of 1-2 min in the case of 1M KOH and 1 h in the case of 0.1M KOH
Road of the Brave
Nelson Sandgren was a long-time art professor at Oregon State University in Corvallis, where he continues to live and paint. Born in Manitoba, Canada, he grew up in Chicago and Portland, Oregon. He studied art at the Institute of Design in Chicago and then attended the University of Oregon, where he earned his B.A. (1943) and M.F.A (1948) degrees. His teachers include David McCosh and Andrew McDuffie Vincent, whose works are also on display in this gallery, as well as Jack Wilkinson. For Sandgren, "The object world represents a magical and engrossing randomness which is a delight to order and reorder in values, color, and line." "Road of the Brave", which combines the artist's love of landscape with the color contrasts and compositional turbulence of German Expressionist painting, is one of a collection of works by Sandgren recently acquired by the Hallie Ford Museum with funds donated by Portland artist Stephan Soihl.Stephan Soihl Art Acquisition Fun
Opportunities and challenges of parallel teaching of Swedish and Swedish as a second language for grades 7-9

Improvisation as a mindset for enhancing artistic potential
The ability to improvise can be regarded as the core in innovative and creative behaviour regardless of field and domain. Improvisation involves a readiness to deal with the unexpected and to create novelty as well as an ability to initiate similar events. Yet, our immediate understanding of improvisation as mainly a part of a performance might cause us to disregard how improvisation could be a crucial part in the process of enhancing the artistic potential. As the professional singing voice has many different meanings and uses for the singers (Sandgren, 2010), and one of the central meanings is the voice as means to maintain a high singing ability, therefore it would be valuable to investigate the activity of improvisation as means or consistent approach to create new perspectives and ideas. The focus of this theoretical paper is on improvisation as a certain mindset that can be developed through training. The line of thought draws on research on creativity and improvisation in cognition and neuroscience (Dietrich, 2004; Kaufman & Sternberg, 2010). Findings on improvisation in domains such as music (Berliner, 1994; MacDonald et al., 2006; Sandgren, 2005), psychotherapy (Stern et al, 1998) and organisations (Weick, 1995; 1998) will be compared.</p
Complexities in Palliative Cancer Care: Can Grounded Theories be Useful to Increase Awareness?
This paper includes first a summary of a grounded theory “Living on hold”, which was one of four different grounded theories in my dissertation (Sandgren, 2010). The theory is then explained in relation to the other grounded theories to give an example of how different grounded theories can be integrated, which leads to an increased awareness of what is going on in a research area
