Mazur Daria, Między stłumieniem a autentycznością. Metafora Don Carlosa w filmie Leontine Sagan Dziewczęta w mundurkach [Between Suppression and Authenticity. The Metaphor of Don Carlos in Leontine Sagan’s Movie Mädchen in Uniform]. „Przestrzenie Teorii” 32. Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 143–166. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/pt.2019.32.7. The article is a comprehensive analysis of the intertextual references to Frederick Schiller’s tragedy Don Carlos in Leontine Sagan’s movie Girls in Uniform (Mädchen in Uniform, 1931). The author considers the complex circumstances of the cooperation between the director and the artistic director, Carl Froelich, during the production. Moreover, she also presents the literary basis for the movie, namely the tragedy by Christy Winsloe (Gestern und Heute – Yesterday and Today). On this basis, the author analyses the multilevel presence of two phenomena in the movie: suppression and authenticity, which are related to the metaphor of Don Carlos and the plot of love between two women. The contexts for the analysis are inspired by research in the anthropology of romanticism, psychoanalysis, the psychology of sexual identity, and research on the works of Frederick Schiller.Mazur Daria, Między stłumieniem a autentycznością. Conjugate Gradient MIMO Iterative Learning Control Using Data-Driven Stochastic Gradients

    No full text
Data-driven iterative learning control can achieve high performance for systems performing repeating tasks without the need for modeling. The aim of this paper is to develop a fast data-driven method for iterative learning control that is suitable for massive MIMO systems through the use of efficient unbiased gradient estimates. A stochastic conjugate gradient descent algorithm is developed that uses dedicated experiments to determine the conjugate search direction and optimal step size at each iteration. The approach is illustrated on a multivariable example, and it is shown that the method is superior to both the earlier stochastic gradient descent and deterministic conjugate gradient descent methods. Shaping multiple Ajijics and development : a Mexican town in the context of the international retirement migration

    No full text
Ajijic is a Mexican town that during the 1990s experienced its biggest social, economic, and physical transformation of the last 50 years. This transformation was mainly triggered by two factors: 1) a significant increase in the number of foreign retirees moving into Ajijic (effect of a global phenomenon identified as international retirement migration); and 2) the consequent increase in the construction of residential developments and infrastructure (mainly retiree-oriented). In this thesis the author argues that the international retirement migration phenomenon in Ajijic provoked the emergence of different projects of shaping the physical characteristics of this town. Through these projects, social actors shape Ajijic according to their different interpretations of what the town of Ajijic is, and what local development and modernisation mean to them. The transformation of the physical characteristics of Ajijic, through these projects, has also transformed the social life of this town

Designing for Compact Living Spaces: An Exploration Tool for the Ultimate Tiny House Experience

    No full text
In recent years, the popularity of compact living spaces like Tiny Houses is rising in the Netherlands. With Tiny Houses still gaining in popularity, there is a demand for information and knowledge about this new form of living. Through multiple sources, interested people are learning about tiny living and how to realize living in a Tiny House. However, these sources only cover the 'what' and 'how' about a Tiny House and forget about the most important 'why' part: why does a Tiny House fit you and which aspects of living in a Tiny House are important to you? This project focuses on this 'why-gap' by designing an exploration tool that helps people to find their ultimate Tiny House experience and this way create a strong base for designing their own Tiny House. To gain knowledge about the context, target group, and existing Tiny Houses, multiple types of research are conducted. In a contextual research, Tiny House residents are asked to share their experiences to find out which different values can be distinguished per resident. In the user research, the target groups are defined to see how the tool could contribute to each of the different groups. The reference analysis is used to map out the different characteristic elements that determine the design and character of a Tiny House. From these researches, a design model arose, where the 'why' forms the base of the design, with the user and its values central. The 'how' builds on to this base, where the choices of the user as the determinants are central. Finally, these two layers serve as the foundation for the design of the Tiny House. The final design: Tiny Roots is a toolkit that can be used in a series of sessions, for users to explore their ultimate Tiny House experience by answering this 'why' and 'how' first before designing the 'what': the Tiny House itself. It serves as the roots for designing a Tiny House that meets all values and wishes, matches the personality of the resident and this way create the ultimate Tiny House experience.Design for Interactio

A study of organizational climate in three developmental level secondary schools in the middle Georgia area, 1984

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in the organizational climate of schools, based on developmental level patterns in three secondary schools in the Middle Georgia Area. Methods and Procedures Teachers from the three selected secondary schools participated in the study. The schools were selected because of their accessibility to the investigator and known willingness to participate. One school was for grade 8-9; one school was for grade 10; and one school was for grades 11 and 12. The Total of 112 teachers repsponded by completing the (1) Diagnostic Survey of Leadership Improvement, and (2) a personal data sheet, designated to collect specific demographic data. The data collected was analyzed by means of one-way analysis of variance and F-ratio with a .05 level of confidence. The means and standard deviations for over-all schools and individual schools were used and t tests were obtained. Percentages were used to analyze demographic data

A design framework for nonlinear iterative learning control and repetitive control: Applied to three mechatronic case studies

    No full text
Iterative learning control (ILC) and repetitive control (RC) can lead to high performance by attenuating repeating disturbances perfectly, yet these approaches may amplify non-repeating disturbances. The aim of this paper is to achieve both perfect, fast attenuation of repeating disturbances and limited amplification of non-repeating disturbances. This is achieved by including a deadzone nonlinearity in the learning filter, which distinguishes disturbances based on their different amplitudes to apply different learning gains. Convergence conditions for nonlinear ILC and RC are developed, which are used in combination with system measurements in a comprehensive design procedure. Experimental implementation demonstrates fast learning and small errors.Team Jan-Willem van Wingerde
