A Systematic Methodology to Study Driving Adaptation Effects under Flooding Conditions
Flooding events not only cause physical damage to the road infrastructure and roadside systems, yet they potentially lead to significant traffic disruptions over the network which have a large impact on the sustainability of urban cities. According to several climate change scenarios, flooding events as a result of intense precipitation are expected to continue into the future becoming more frequent and severe. Therefore, it is essential that engineers design and manage transport networks as efficiently as possible under adverse weather conditions in order to build more resilient transport systems. To do so, professionals need to understand and analyse the impacts of flooding on transport networks. Modelling the impacts of flooding events on the road network is nowadays possible by the use of integrated simulation techniques that combine a flood simulation model with a microscopic traffic model. With these modelling techniques, the geographic location, severity and other impacts of flooding on the road network can be predicted and studied. Nevertheless, in order to perform a consistent traffic simulation under flooding conditions, a thorough analysis of driving behaviour under such conditions needs first to be accomplished, which is a research field that has been scarcely investigated thus far. Therefore, the main contribution of this thesis is to provide a systematic methodology for studying driving adaptation effects under flooding conditions at two complementary levels, namely microscopic and macroscopic level. This consists on a multilevel approach that uses microscopic traffic data of vehicles driving through flooding to extend the study to a macroscopic level. A video analysis procedure called the `The 3-Step Video Analysis Approach´ (3SVAA) is developed by the author to extract microscopic traffic parameters from video recording of vehicles driving under different flood depths. This methodology is implemented through an empirical study that analyses two videos of vehicles crossing waterlogged stretches part of the A94 and A93 major roads in Scotland (UK). First, the 3SVAA is introduced as a suitable data collection technique to extract microscopic traffic variables (i.e. vehicle's speed, time headways and spacing) from video recording of vehicles driving through flooding. More specifically, these parameters are obtained from the vehicle's trajectories in the space (m)-time(s) diagram, which is the main outcome of this video analysis approach. Subsequently, by applying a multilevel analysis, the study can be extended to a macroscopic level by correlating macroscopic variables (i.e. average speed, flow and density) with their microscopic counterparts through the fundamental relationship of traffic flow. This allows to estimate part of the fundamental diagrams of vehicles travelling under different flood depths, and therefore to study flood impacts on free flow speed and capacity.Civil Engineering | Transport and Plannin

Fair Impact-based Forecasting in Manila Bay, Philippines: Integration of the information needs of disaster managers into fair impact-based forecasting to improve emergency management
The Philippines is a country located in the typhoon belt of the Pacific. Its location makes it typhoon prone and on average around 20 typhoons enter the country every year (Asian Disaster Reduction Center, 2008). This natural phenomenon can have disastrous effects and therefore, good preparedness is of special importance. Traditionally weather forecasts have been used in order to predict the physical characteristics of typhoons to organise early actions that can dampen their damage. However, regardless the good meteorological forecasts, typhoons kept having large effects in coastal areas, due to the gap of knowledge between a hazard and its impact. For this reason, nowadays disaster managers are increasingly more interested in the knowing the repercussion of natural hazards, which can help to prepare and mitigate their consequences (Tozier de la Poterie et al., 2018).Although forecasts that predict the impact of hazards, the so-called impact-based forecasts, are rising, there are not many of these systems operationalised yet. To make these forecasts more functional it is essential to understand what their users’ needs are. Because disaster managers work under stressful conditions, it is crucial to have the right information in order to take effective actions. This research has developed an impact-based forecasting prototype for Manila Bay, Philippines, considering the information needs of disaster managers. In order to do so, an iterative process has been followed in the creation of the system, in which disaster managers provided their inputs and feedbacks on the prototype. The impacts on the assets of relevance for the disaster managers have been forecasted with the use of Delft-FEWS and Delft-FIAT. Furthermore, this forecasting system has been novel in predicting the impact of typhoons considering not only the hazard and exposure but also implementing the vulnerabilities of the affected area. The findings of this study suggest that an impact-based forecasting system for Manila Bay should provide information on the affected population, livelihoods, hospitals, roads and schools. Those assets have been pointed out as most important for disaster managers at local scale. The output of the forecasting system should provide actionable results that allow disaster managers to make quick and relevant decisions. Furthermore, the data displayed in the system should be simple, clear and with colour codes that allow for a fast interpretation of the results and provide maps with information of the impacts on all the assets per municipality or province. Besides, it has been observed that vulnerability plays an important role when prioritising the action areas of disaster managers. The aim of this research was to develop an impact-based forecasting system that considers the information and display needs of disaster managers, while integrating the vulnerabilities of the affected area. Therefore, the objective of this thesis was not to develop an accurate mathematical model that provides the exact impact. Instead, it is a guide of what a disaster managers-based forecast should provide. Hence, in order to make this forecasting system operational, validation of the prototype and consideration of other hazards, such as wind speeds, are recommended.Water Managemen
Gait Variability and Kinematic Alterations in People with Diabetes Mellitus and Peripheral Neuropathy
Background: People with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy have been reported to show alterations in lower limb joint function compared to healthy non-diabetic people. Specifically the maximum angular movement available at certain joints can be reduced during static, non-weight bearing tasks. Limited joint range of motion has the potential to compromise balance and stability thereby increasing the risk of falling. It is unclear whether a reduction in the extent of movement available at the joints is reflected by a reduction in the amount of angular movement actually utilised during a functional task such as stair negotiation. The aim of this study was to determine if people with diabetes show reduced dynamic range of motion at the ankle, knee and hip joints during stair ascent and descent in comparison to controls. Falls risk during stair negotiation was calculated by measuring the degree of variability in dynamic joint range of motion. Methods: Data were generated from three groups: subjects with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy (DPN), diabetes without peripheral neuropathy (DM), and healthy controls (Ctl). The study was conducted in a gait laboratory using motion capture and related 3D software for analysis. Joint range of motion for the ankle, knee, and hip were captured during level walking, stair ascent, and descent. A seven step, bespoke staircase was fabricated for this purpose. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Newman-Keuls tests were used to analyse the data. Results: Significantly reduced ankle range of motion, in the sagittal plane, was observed in the DPN group during stair ascent when compared to the controls. For stair descent, the DPN group demonstrated a significant increase in knee and hip ROM in the frontal plane, and also hip ROM in the transverse plane. No significant differences between the groups were identified for joint variability. Conclusions: People with DPN demonstrate alterations in dynamic range of motion at the lower limb joints during stair ascent and descent. The degree of angular movement utilised for both stair tasks was decreased at the ankle joint and this has the potential to undermine balance and stability. In contrast, angular movement at the knee and hip joints was increased in the frontal and transverse planes. This may compensate for impaired balance and stability by increasing the base of support to maintain balance and assist in foot clearance and placement. The specific combination of increased angular movement at the knee and hip may represent a compensatory stair gait strategy in response to reduced angular movement at the ankle joint

Pure distortion of symmetric box beams with hinged walls
[EN] This paper is concerned with the analysis of the pure torsion and distortion of straight box beams with trapezial cross-sections and hinged walls. A one-dimensional mechanical model for this kind of system subjected to anti-symmetric loads on the end cross-sections and no warping constraints is developed. The distortional stiffness of the system is provided by the torsional rigidity of the wall panels. The cross-sectional kinematic condition for which torsion and distortion are uncoupled has been determined. Novel explicit expressions of the internal and external distortional moments, the distortion constant, and the distortional warping pattern have been deduced; they can be directly translated to the classical distortion theory. Results of representative test cases with different section shapes and loads show excellent agreement with finite element models using shell elements. The model is a first step to analyse bridge decks with a distortionable central cell for wind engineering applications. Finally, an extension of the model, including the distortional stiffness provided by the frame bending stiffness of the cross-section walls, is presented. The extended model is applicable to assess the large-scale torsional¿distortional effects in long beams with closed cross sections.This research was carried out during the stay of C. The author had his internship at Wyeth Philippines Incorporated. It is located at Canlubang Industrial Estate, Bo. Pittland Canlubang Laguna. In here the author will elucidate his experirence in his internship at the company.
The author was assigned at the Operations Management Department as a trainee. The division is responsible for all the trainings and seminars that are needed by the employee in their specific tasks.
Among the responsibilities that was commissioned to the author were documentation, updating the employ ee master list, encoding of back up data, binder labeller, facilitator at the Contractor Orientation and annual cGMP refresher examination, assistant in the in-house and off-site trainings and seminars, maker of the identification cards of the training participants, distributing training and seminar certificates, assist the visitors in going in and out of the plant, photographer at plant tours, and perform such other duties that may be assigned by the superior.
The internship helped the author to discern his strengths and weaknesses through the training that he had undergone. Also through this, he learned a lt for him like acclimatize to a new atmosphere, planning, organizing and dealing with other people that boost his interpersonal skills even more
