La adaptación cinematográfica desde una perspectiva de género: Bridget Jones´s Diary
According to a study presented by The Guardian, Bridget Jones´s Diary is one of the 10 novels which best reflects the society at the end of the 20th century. The great success of this novel, as well as the film, is due to the plot and to Jane Austen´s narrative techniques. We will discuss how the scriptwriters created an adaptation through general intertextualities that reveal its connection with the postfeminist discourse, which were the cinematographic strategies that they used for the adaptation of the novel. On the other hand, we will discuss about its author, Helen Fielding, who is one of the writers that best illustrates the situation of occidental women at the end of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. She describes a woman who dares to talk about her daily problems openly, pulling apart the belief that personal problems have to be kept in the private sphere. She uses real language, even creating new words to give women their own voice; in fact, she is a pioneer in the literary genre called Chick Lit, about which we will discuss its varieties and components. The post-feminist movement will serve as a background to contextualize the novel and the movie. The protagonist, Bridget Jones, is overwhelmed by the expectations of the postfeminist ideals. Bridget Jones´s Diary depicts the postfeminist settings through different intertexts: Jane Austen´s novel and the TV adaptation, both taken to the big screen by the scriptwriters of this movie (Helen Fielding, Andrew Davis and Richard Curtis).La obra de Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones´s Diary, es una de las 10 novelas que mejor reflejan la sociedad de finales del siglo XX, según un estudio llevado a cabo por el periódico The Guardian. Mr Darcy as symbolic capital in Jane Austen`s Pride and Prejudice and Helen Fielding`s "Bridget Jones" novels
This graduation paper examines Pierre Bourdieu`s concept of symbolic capital as applied to Jane Austen and her novel Pride and Prejudice, focusing on its appropriation and recreation in the "Bridget Jones" novels by the contemporary British novelist Helen Fielding.
Before considering the character of Mr Darcy, which in Fielding`s fiction serves as the most evident instance of Jane Austen`s symbolic capital, it also briefly takes interest in historical framework within which it has been created and perpetuated. Since there are no verifiedportraits of Miss Austen, «apart from two rather unpolished drawings by her sister Cassandra» (Jukić, 1999:24), her evasive and uncertain image has only been a part of disentangling the real "Austen". A composite Jane has been created by various biographers in order to feed the Janeite fantasy and devotion within the framework of historical fact. She has suffered from dual identities, since literary critics from Chapmen (1923), over Harding, Leavis and Lewis (1940s), to Booth (1960s) respectively approached her texts, agreeing that they are open to structured reading as they abound in the large number of different patterns of significance. During the First World War, she represented Englishness, the fact used and abused by numerous publishing houses. Her novels have been repackaged by theatre and film industry, with the 1995 BBC series of Pride and Prejudice triggering the real Austenmania. The cultural commodity of divine Jane has been sustained by the important feature or phenomenon of the current literary landscape which includes recreating, remaking, rewriting, appropriating, etc. The excellent example of utilizing the powerful place of authority within the institution of literature in order to produce expectations, bridge the gap between an old, elusive discourse and new consumers by eliciting recognition, is Helen Fielding.
We receive it in her "Bridget Jones" novels – Bridget Jones`s Diary (1996), Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (1998), and Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy (2013), and her treatment of Jane Austen`s plot, its protagonist Mr Darcy, and subversive irony as its chief stylistic device. She included our reading experience, preconceptions, and the ability of interpreting Jane Austen`s juxtaposition of love language and money language; exaggerated manners of perfect Mr Darcy; and all the subversive potentials of Pride and Prejudice into her own literary work to elicit the appreciation of her narrative techniques in conveying new messages. She has chosen diary format to undercut the theme of plotting and to expose control as myth, subverting her predecessor`s controlling narrative technique. Her characters, Bridget and Mark, constantly defy the trajectory set by Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam, leaving our expectations partially satisfied by the promise of their marriage. In doing that, she undermines the very concept of chick lit subgenre of romance, and protects Miss Austen from nostalgic, recuperating, romantic, and other misreadings of her novels and herself as an author. As Helen Fielding belongs to
post-modern British society, she also turns her irony towards their need for historical and canonical authors.
Jane Austen and her novels have become the cultural commodity of Great Britain, generated by their symbolic capital in the form of numerous editions, biographies, criticism, adaptations, recreations, etc. As a ripple effect, they have also triggered some new symbolic capitals as in the case of Andrew Davies, Colin Firth and Helen Fielding who has paid homage to her literary parent by saying: «Don`t say what, say pardon, darling, and do as your "mother" tells you.» (Fielding, 1998:307), or as Austen put it, «Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure» (Austen, 1994.284)

Use of Saints in the era of modernization : Use of S. Bridget and S. Olav traditions in connection with commemorations in Sweden and Norway 1891-2005
Avhandlingen syftar till att jämföra och förstå variationen av historiebruk i samband med minnesfiranden av heliga Birgitta i Sverige och hellig Olav i Norge med fokus på olika aktörers motiv, resurser, budskap och identitetsskapande processer i en tid av modernisering och sekularisering. Under den katolska medeltiden var helgonfiranden vanliga, men de förbjöds i samband med reformationen. I slutet av 1800-talet, samtidigt med omvandligen av de båda länderna till moderna industri-samhällen, väcktes återigen intresset för dessa helgonfiranden. Det var bland annat liberala rörelser som brukade helgonen för att förankra de förändringsprocesser, som man ville göra, i historien. Heliga Birgitta användes i Sverige av kvinnorörelsen som en medeltida förebild i kampen för ökat inflytande i samhälle. Hellig Olav blev under samma tid i Norge en symbol för nationell självständighet i kampen för upplösning av unionen med Sverige. För den katolska kyrkan, som under 1800-talet åter fick verka i de båda protestantiska länderna, blev bruken av heliga Birgitta och hellig Olav en historisk länk till medeltidens kyrka och för att därigenom legitimera sin verksamhet, medan de lutherska kyrkorna tog avstånd från dessa firanden. I avhandlingen följs utvecklingen av dessa minnesfiranden i relation till samhällsförändringarna. På 1920-talet väcktes även de lutherska kyrkornas och det offentliga samhällets intresse för Birgitta- och Olavjubileer. Genom det ekumeniska genombrottet på 1970-talet och kyrkornas ökade engagemang i sociala och kulturella frågor efter Andra Vatikankonciliet blev jubileerna arenor då den ekumeniska gemenskapen och kulturella öppenheten synliggjordes vilket bidrog till att bredda intresset för dessa firanden. Detta förstärktes i tiden kring sekelskiftet 2000 samtidigt som engagemanget från det offent-liga samhället och kommersiella aktörer ökade. Författaren ser utvecklingen av dessa jubileer som uttryck för olika identitetsprocesser. Hellig Olavs roll som en nationell symbol har varit mycket tydlig medan heliga Birgitta framför allt symboli-serat Sveriges internationella roll. Orter som varit viktiga i helgonberättelserna har brukat helgontradi-tionerna i lokala identitetsprocesser vilket allt mer betonats genom turismens ökade betydelse. Jubile-erna har även öppnat för individuella identitetsprocesser med helgonen som religiösa förebilder. För kvinnorörelser har heliga Birgitta genomgående under åren framförts som en viktig förebild. I avhandlingen diskuteras även hur det ökade intresset för firanden av heliga Birgitta och hellig Olav förhåller sig till teorin om den ökade sekulariseringen i det moderna samhället. Med stöd av religionssociologisk forskning diskuteras detta samband. En religiös pluralism kan öka det religiösa utbudet och därmed även ”konsumtionen” av religion. Många kombinerar även det moderna samhällets rationalitet med irrationella föreställningar och upplevelser.The aim of this thesis is to compare and understand the variations in the use of history in connection with the commemorations of S. Bridget and S. Olav while focussing on different participants’ motives, assets, messages and identity construction processes in an era of modernization and secularization. During the Catholic Middle Ages, celebrations of saints were common, but after the Reformation they were forbidden. At the end of the 19th century, parallel to the development of modern industrial societies in Sweden and Norway, a new interest in celebrating the national saints was aroused. It was mostly the liberal movements who made use of the saints in order to establish the changes they wanted to do in the past. S. Bridget was used by the women´s-rights movements as a role model from the middle ages in the struggle for more influence in society. In Norway, S. Olav was held up as a symbol for national independence in the struggle for the dissolution of the union with Sweden. For the Catho-lic Church, which was re-established in both countries in the 19th century, their use of S. Bridget and S. Olav became a historical link to the medieval church and as a means to authorize their activities. On the other hand, the Lutheran churches repudiated these celebrations of saints. This thesis follows the development of the commemorations in relation to the changes in the socie-ties. In the 1920s the Lutheran churches and the public bodies became interested and involved in cele-brating S. Bridget and S. Olav. After the radical change of the ecumenical climate in the 1970s and a stronger ecclesiastical engagement in the social and cultural life after the Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican, the commemorations became arenas where the ecumenical fellowship and cultural openness were visible. These events also promoted a growing general interest in these celebrations. This was strengthened around the year 2000 and at the same time the engagement from the public bodies and commercial players increased. The author describes the development of these commemorations as expressions of different identity construction processes. S. Olav became a national symbol while S.Bridget became primarily a symbol for Sweden in the international community. Places with important roles in the stories about the saints have used the traditions in local identity processes. This has been increasingly emphasised because of the growing importance of tourism. The celebrations have also opened the possibility for individual identity processes with the saints as important models. For women´s-rights movements S. Bridget has been used as a strong ideal. The thesis also discusses how the growing interest for commemorating S. Bridget and S. Olav is linked to the theory of secularization of modern society. This connection is discussed in relation to research in the sociology of religion. Religious pluralism can increase the religious supply and thereby also the “consumption” of religion and many people seems to combine the rationality of the modern society with irrational ideas and experiences without difficulties

Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die verschiedenen Perspektivenwechsel in Original und Übersetzung herauszuarbeiten und deren Auswirkungen auf die Protagonistin des Romans aufzuzeigen. Dabei wird von der These ausgegangen, dass sich das Bild der Protagonistin in der Übersetzung aufgrund der Perspektivenwechsel verändert. Es wird angenommen, dass dies in der Verhaltensweise der Protagonistin gegenüber den anderen Figuren des Romans sichtbar wird. Zunächst werden die Autorin, die in ihren Werken behandelten Themen sowie die Figur Bridget Jones besprochen. Danach werden die Bridget-Jones-Romane, deren Entstehung, Aufbau und Charaktere näher beleuchtet. Weiters werden der deutsche Übersetzer Marcus Ingendaay und die Rezeption des Romans im englisch- und deutschsprachigen Raum thematisiert. Anschließend wird das Konzept der focalization dargelegt, anhand dessen die spätere Textanalyse durchgeführt wird. Unter focalization versteht man eine bestimmte Perspektive, aus der Personen oder Dinge in einer Erzählung wahrgenommen werden. Dabei können Verschiebungen der Perspektive auftreten, wodurch sich der Fokus innerhalb der Erzählung verändert. Bei der Textanalyse können zahlreiche Perspektivenwechsel in der Übersetzung festgestellt werden, wodurch sich das Bild der Protagonistin verändert. Daraus ergibt sich, dass die Figur in der Übersetzung wesentlich unsicherer und realitätsfremder dargestellt wird. Sie wirkt sehr hilflos und es mangelt ihr an Selbstbewusstsein. Weiters ist erkennbar, dass die Protagonistin in der Übersetzung zum Pessimismus neigt, sehr unselbstständig ist und ein geringes Selbstwertgefühl besitzt.Die angenommene These wird daher weitgehend bestätigt.Between reason and madness ? It is hypothesized that a different image of the main character is created in the translation resulting from changing points of view. It is assumed that the different image is revealed through the main character?s behaviour to the other characters of the novel. In a first stage, the author, the subjects of her works and the character Bridget Jones are discussed. Subsequently, the Bridget Jones novels as well as their origin, their structure and their characters are presented. Further on, the German translator Marcus Ingendaay and the reception of the novel in the English and German speaking parts are highlighted. A second stage sees the presentation of the concept of focalization which provides the basis of the text analysis. The concept of focalization describes the point of view through which persons or objects are perceived within a story. These points of view can shift, resulting in a change of focus within the story.Within the text analysis, several changes of point of view can be observed which consequently provoke a different image of the main character in the translation. As a result, the character appears to be far more insecure and out of touch with reality. She seems very helpless and expresses a lack of self-confidence. Furthermore it is discovered that the main character tends to be pessimistic, very dependent and suffers from a low self-esteem. Helen Fielding and Her Depiction of Modern British Woman.
Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o moderní ženě očima spisovatelky Helen Fielding, která proslula postavou Bridget Jones. Hlavním cílem práce bylo seznámit se právě s touto hrdinkou a převážně na základě knihy Deník Bridget Jones vypracovat studii o jejím chování, zvycích a celkově o jejím životě.
Práce je rozdělena do několika částí. Teoretická část pojednává o životě autorky, o jejích zkušenostech, které ji inspirovaly při tvorbě, ale také se věnuje popisu všech jejích knih. Potential market for liquefied natural gas fueled marine vessels in the United States

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 89-97).The growing global concern over ship emissions in recent years has driven policy change at the international level toward more stringent vessel emissions standards. The policy change has also been an impetus for innovation and increased attention being paid to existing technologies in marine engineering that lessen ship emissions. It is estimated that the share of emissions from shipping to total global emissions is increasing, as world trade grows, and land-based emissions sources become cleaner. Shipping currently accounts for 2-4% of CO₂, 10-20% of NOx and 4-8% of SO₂ global emissions. Gas turbines and gas engines, hybrid diesel-gas systems, and dual fuel diesel electric engines are examples of the existing engine system technology that can burn natural gas as a fuel and lessen ship emissions. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) fueled vessels in the gas burning mode result in the elimination of all SO₂ emissions, and reduced NOx, CO₂, and particulate matter emissions compared to the emissions from a typical vessel powered by marine diesel. While the capital costs for the LNG-fueled systems are higher than for a typical diesel system, cost savings are generated due to the fact that LNG is historically less expensive than the other relatively lower-emissions fossil fuels, and the engine life is longer than a typical diesel engine. This study determines the feasibility of an LNG-fueled passenger and/or commerce market in the United States by analyzing the success of the current LNG-fueled activity around the world, incorporating the complexities of promoting LNG facilities in the United States, and the current LNG successes, both land-based and shore-side, in the United States.by Bridget C.
