Exposure to halothane, ethrane (13838169), and nitrous oxide (10024972) in the operating rooms of Weld County Hospital (SIC-806) in Greeley, Colorado was determined on June 29, 1978. The evaluation was requested by the hospital management on behalf of the 30 workers in the operating rooms. Measured halothane concentrations ranged from below the limit of detection to 1.73 parts per million (ppm); 2 of 28 samples exceeded the NIOSH recommended concentration of 0.5ppm. Ethrane concentrations ranged from undetectable to 16ppm; 3 of 28 samples exceeded the NIOSH recommended concentration of 0.5ppm. Nitrous oxide concentrations ranged from 5 to 65ppm; 8 of 34 samples exceeded the NIOSH recommended concentration of 25ppm. The author concludes that the concentrations of anesthetic gases in the operating rooms did not pose an immediate danger to employees. The author recommends that anesthetic equipment be checked and maintained regularly, the scavenging system of the anesthetic cart be improved, and equipment be properly maintained. Worker exposures to asbestos (1332214) were surveyed during hotel construction operations (SIC-1542) in Greeley, Colorado on November 18, 1980. The management of Hensel Phelps Construction Company requested the evaluation on behalf of four carpenters who worked with asbestos sheetboard. Four breathing zone samples and one area air sample were collected on AA filters and were counted on a phase contrast microscope. The samples contained asbestos concentrations of 50,000 to 320,000 fibers per cubic meter greater than 5 microns in length, below the OSHA standard of 2,000,000 fibers per cubic meter greater than 5 microns in length. Inadequate use of respirators was noted. The author concludes that the workers are exposed to hazardous amounts of asbestos. Recommendations include implementation of an adequate respiratory protection program, promotion of good personal and workplace hygiene habits, and worker education concerning asbestos exposure hazards.
