Letter written by Reverend Samuel J. May and published in the November 3, 1855, issue of Type of the Times, a Cincinnati news publication in support of the spelling reform movement. The letter was addressed to attendees at a recent Woman's Rights Convention held October 17-18, 1855, at Cincinnati's Smith & Nixon's Hall. May expresses his regret at being unable to attend, and emphasizes his support for the "equal educational, professional, social, religious and political rights of woman." May (1797-1871) was a progressive social reformer during the 19th century who worked in support of education reform, women's rights and abolition. In 1846, he would publish "The Rights and Condition of Women" which argued in favor of female suffrage and gender equality

Abstract: A letter from Samuel J. Hays of Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee, to Andrew Jackson, announcing his embrace of Christianity, November 16, 1842.Scope and Content Note: This collection consists of a single letter from Samuel J. Hays, Jackson, Tennessee, to Andrew Jackson, Hermitage, Tennessee, November 16, 1842. Hays was the son of Colonel Robert Hays and Jane Donelson Hays, sister of Rachel Donelson Jackson, and he called Andrew Jackson "uncle." This letter announces Hay's acceptance of Christianity, thanks to the ministry of the Reverend Daniel Baker (1791-1857), a prominent early nineteenth century revivalist who, earlier, was pastor of the Second Church in Washington, D. C., where Andrew Jackson attended church while President. The letter sheds light on the evangelicalism that characterized the "Second Great Awakening," as does Jackson's annotation on the obverse, "the within gives the joyfull [sic] news that Genl S. J. Hays has joined the church." Several Jackson signatures, as if he was doodling, follow the annotation.Biographical/Historical Note: Madison County, Tennessee, landowner and nephew of Rachel Donelson Jackson (wife of Andrew Jackson)
