Auditing in environments of diverse data

This dissertation has three essays. The first essay examines several analytical models that can be used in the insurance industry. We develop a continuous auditing framework for the insurance industry’s claims payment process. We propose analytical models to detect anomalies in the already paid claims and in the premium calculations. The second essay proposes a framework for developing the Audit Data Standards (ADSs) for specific industries. We apply the framework on the insurance industry. In specific, we apply it on claim payment business cycles of the life / disability insurance industry. We then use these ADSs to develop an interactive auditor dashboard. The third essay examines a possible way for the auditor to overcome data limitations. We examine the added value of using the macroeconomic indicators to improve the prediction and error detection performance of the statistical models used by the auditor through two research questions. our first research question investigated the effect of using macroeconomic indicators in the prediction models by comparing the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) with and without the use of the macroeconomic indicators. our second research question investigated the effect of using macroeconomic indicators in the prediction models when the independent variables contain undetected errors. We tested each research question in three different situations; the macroeconomic variable is used individually, collectively, or with the peer data. our results came in favor of the macroeconomic indicator’s use, specifically when used along with the peer data.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Basma Moharra

The human body in two Egyptian dystopias: al-̣Tabūr (2013, The Queue) and Hunā badan (2017, Here Is a Body) by Basma ‘Abd al-‘Azīz

AbstractAgainst the backdrop of the recent resurfacing of the dystopian genre in the Arabic literary field, the Egyptian psychiatrist, essayist, and novelist Basma ‘Abd al-‘Azīz stands out for her political dystopias, which can be read as lucid projections of the ‘real malfunctioning’ of the Egyptian political system. In this essay, building on a close-reading analysis and on two interviews given to me by the author between 2018 and 2023, I dissect the novel al-Ṭabūr(2012, The Queue 2016) and its prequel Hunā badan (2017, Here Is a Body 2021). In particular, I will focus on the trope of the human body as a ‘transformative space’ in which the oppressive authority can exert its control, its persuasion, and its strength to the point of creating bodies that lack minds

Harboring illnesses: On the association between disease and living conditions in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon

No full text
This research examined the association between the domestic built environment in a Palestinian refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon, and the presence of illness among household members. Data on the domestic built environment, socio-demographics and health were collected in 860 households. The association between the presence of illness among household members and three environmental indices, namely infrastructure and services, housing conditions, and crowding was evaluated. These indices were based on a number of items that reflected the existing problems in the domestic built environment. The main finding was the positive association between poor housing conditions and the presence of illness among household members. Households with 8-15 housing problems were twice more likely to report the presence of illness than those with less than four housing problems (OR = 2.08, 95percent CI = 1.40-3.11). This research contributes to the understanding of the influence of the built environment on the health of a refugee population. © 2006 Taylor and Francis.*ADM CENTR STAT, 1998, ET STAT COND VIE MEN; Al-Khatib IA, 2003, INT J ENVIRON HEAL R, V13, P315, DOI 10.1080-09603120310001616092; ANNATOUR S, 2004, PALESTINIAN REFUGEES; Dunn JR, 2000, SOC SCI MED, V51, P563, DOI 10.1016-S0277-9536(99)00496-7; Dunn JR, 2002, J EPIDEMIOL COMMUN H, V56, P671, DOI 10.1136-jech.56.9.671; Evans GW, 2002, ANNU REV PUBL HEALTH, V23, P303, DOI 10.1146-annurev.publhealth.23.112001.112349; Evans GW, 2002, J ENVIRON PSYCHOL, V22, P221, DOI 10.1006-jevp.256; *FAFO, 2003, DIFF PAST UNC FUT LI; Farah R, 2000, REPORT PSYCHOL EFFEC; FILFIL M, 1999, HOUSING ENV WOMENS H; GALEA S, 2005, ANNU REV PUBL HEALTH, V26, P1; GIACAMAN R, 1985, PROFILE LIFE HLTH 3; Gray A., 2001, DEFINITIONS CROWDING; Jackson RJ, 2003, AM J PUBLIC HEALTH, V93, P1382, DOI 10.2105-AJPH.93.9.1382; Jones AP, 1998, SOC SCI MED, V47, P755, DOI 10.1016-S0277-9536(98)00151-8; KIFLE A, 2000, WORKSH HOUS URB DEV; Krieger J, 2002, AM J PUBLIC HEALTH, V92, P758, DOI 10.2105-AJPH.92.5.758; Kumie A, 2002, ETHIOP J HEALTH DEV, V16, P303; Lowry S., 1991, HOUSING HLTH; MAKHOUL J, 2003, ENV URBANIZATION, V15; Myers D, 1996, J AM PLANN ASSOC, V62, P66, DOI 10.1080-01944369608975671; Northridge ME, 2003, J URBAN HEALTH, V80, P556, DOI 10.1093-jurban-jtg064; Perdue WC, 2003, AM J PUBLIC HEALTH, V93, P1390, DOI 10.2105-AJPH.93.9.1390; ROUX AD, 2003, J URBAN HEALTH, V80, P539; Rylander R, 2000, ARCH ENVIRON HEALTH, V55, P300; Samet JM, 2003, AM J PUBLIC HEALTH, V93, P1489, DOI 10.2105-AJPH.93.9.1489; SIRINIVASAN S, 2003, AM J PUBLIC HEALTH, V93, P1446; SPSS, 2003, STAT PACK SOC SCI VE; Takano T, 2001, J EPIDEMIOL COMMUN H, V55, P263, DOI 10.1136-jech.55.4.263; Thomson H, 2001, BRIT MED J, V323, P187, DOI 10.1136-bmj.323.7306.187; *UN HABITAT, 2003, SHELT REF WORLD; *UNHCR, 2004, REF NUMB; *US CENS BUR, 2000, CENS 2000 AM HOUS SU; Wolff CG, 2001, BRIT MED J, V322, P1209, DOI 10.1136-bmj.322.7296.1209; World Health Organization, 1992, INT STAT CLASS DIS R; XAVIER R, 2003, AM J PUBLIC HEALTH, V93, P155975

Orbitopterional Approach for the Resection of a Suprasellar Craniopharyngioma: Adapting the Strategy to the Microsurgical and Pathologic Anatomy

No full text
Objectives To describe the orbitopterional approach for the resection of a suprasellar craniopharyngioma with emphasis on the microsurgical and pathological anatomy of such lesions. Design After completing the orbitopterional craniotomy in one piece including a supraorbital ridge osteotomy, the Sylvian fissure was split in a distal to proximal direction. The ipsilateral optic nerve and internal carotid artery were identified. Establishing a corridor to the tumor through both the opticocarotid and optic cisterns allowed for a wide angle of attack. Using both corridors, a microsurgical gross total resection was achieved. A radical resection required transection of the stalk at the level of the hypothalamus. Photographs of the region are borrowed from Dr Rhoton's laboratory to illustrate the microsurgical anatomy. Understanding the cisternal and topographic relationships of the optic nerve, optic chiasm, and internal carotid artery is critical to achieving gross total resection while preserving normal anatomy. Participants The surgery was performed by the senior author assisted by Dr. Jaafar Basma. The video was edited by Dr. Vincent Nguyen. Outcome Measures Outcome was assessed with extent of resection and postoperative visual function. Results A gross total resection of the tumor was achieved. The patient had resolution of her bitemporal hemianopsia. She had diabetes insipidus with normal anterior pituitary function. Conclusions Understanding the microsurgical anatomy of the suprasellar region and the pathological anatomy of craniopharyngiomas is necessary to achieve a good resection of these tumors. The orbitopterional approach provides the appropriate access for such endeavor. The link to the video can be found at: https://youtu.be/Be6dtYIGqfs.</jats:p

Co-dwell the multicultural community cohabitation: Co-living and Co-working as means for cohabitation between newcomers and Dutch starters

No full text
Co-Dwell is a project that emphasizes the co-living and co-working model as means for social cohabitation between Dutch starters and newcomers in Rotterdam as a multicultural city. It concentrates on smoothening the integration process of newcomers through involvement with the local community. The intention is to create an environment where people can benefit from each other’s knowledge and cultural experiences. A cooperative housing model will bring this idea to the reality with a subsidy from Rotterdam municipality. The two actors would supply the target group by affordable collective dwellings and collective work possibilities to give them a good start.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Advanced Housing Desig

Investigation of Dealumination in Phosphate-Based Geopolymer Formation Process: Factor Screening and Optimization

No full text
In this study, phosphate-based geopolymers obtained from two aluminosilicate precursors with different mineralogical compositions were investigated. The used experimental methods were X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, atomic absorption measurements and experimental designs. Nine factors influencing the dealumination process during geopolymer formation were screened based on a Plackett–Burman design. The results show that the control factors are the P/Al molar ratio, curing temperature and curing time. These significant parameters were selected for further optimization using a central composite design. It was found that regardless of the used P/Al molar ratio, curing temperature and curing time increases generate an increase in the response. However, the P/Al molar ratio variation strongly affects Al removal only at low curing temperatures (between 22 and 50 °C) and with short curing times (between 0.2 and 3 h). The curing time parameter is the most significant factor. In addition, the same percentage of liberated Al can be achieved either by increasing the curing temperature in the earliest steps of geopolymer formation or by prolonging the curing time, even at low curing temperatures. Finally, the optimal conditions allowing maximum aluminum release are P/Al molar ratio = 2.0, curing temperature ≈ 70 °C and curing time = 4.76 h
