    Strategic parking management system / Noraini Mohamed Zin

    Parking facility can be considered as part of planning requirement that can affect development scheme as a whole. The increases of population, paralel with the increasing of road users lead to parking concerns, especialy in Muar Johor. Insuffiecient car park and congested traffic occured in that area, and the study keen to conduct a research to identify the factors that contribute to the problem. Therefore, parking should always be well manage with the strategic parking management system. The author will investigate the parking management system at Muar town from planning, organising and controlling point of view. The demand for property in Muar is increasing, but with problems of lack of parking space and congested area can change property buyers decision. As a result of the review of literature several authors previously found that, there are several factors that contribute to parking problem in Muar area, and public behavior and the poor management at Majlis Perbandaran Muar are two major concerns that the study will focus on. The objective is to study the Parking Management System, to identify the parking problem in Bandar Muar, to evaluate the feedback and response among community regarding to parking issue in use, to give suggestion or recommendation in problem occurs. Bandar Muar (Johor) was selected as the study area due to the many complaints received by the Majlis Perbandaran Muar (MPM). The data obtained through observation, interviews and questionnaires of the officers and staff council and users who frequently use the parking facility in Bandar Muar. The findings of this study have found that the parking management system in Bandar Muar under the local authorities are still moderate. Suggestions are made to improve the parking management system of local authorities to ensure the parking management system at a higher level

    Improvement of phytase efficacy in poultry through dietary fat supplementation

    Phosphorus in phytate is largely unavailable to chickens unless they are provided with dietary phytase. Phytase was shown to increase phytate degradation in the crop and proventriculus-gizzard and very little phytate degradation occurred in the duodenum-jejunum or ileum. These previous investigations were conducted on chickens fed corn based diets but not with wheat based diet. Increase in digesta passage or mean retention time (MRT) along the gastrointestinal tract could enhance phytase efficacy as the prolonged reaction time between substrates and phytase may further facilitate phytate dephosphorylation. Dietary fat and fibre supplementation have been shown to influence intestinal MRT in chickens therefore it is expected that inclusion of both dietary fat and fibre could be manipulated to further improve phytase efficacy in broiler chickens. Three experiments and preliminary studies were conducted: 1) to assess the effect of methodology on estimation of phytate hydrolysis and P digestibility in young broilers and 2) to investigate whether or not dietary fat and fibre could further improve phytase efficacy in broilers fed diets containing wheat by delaying digesta MRT. In the preliminary study, in order to facilitate analysis of limited digesta samples, a sample preparation protocol involving H2SO4 digestion for sequential analysis of titanium and other minerals in feed and digesta was established. It was also found that blood protein interfered with the colorimetric analysis of P and myo-inositol, thus deproteinization is required. Continuous feeding prior to sampling was recommended to obtain adequate amount of digesta for digestibility related analyses. In the first study, feeding duration (1 h or 5 h) and 1 h feeding followed by feed withdrawal and refeeding prior to sampling significantly affected the concentration of phytate, inositol phosphates and measured degradation and digestibility of phytate-P in different segments of gastrointestinal tract, which could lead to overestimation or underestimation of degradation and digestibility values. Therefore, it is also recommended to collect digesta samples at least 3 h after the start of photoperiod and avoid sampling 4 h prior to dark period when lighting program is applied. In the second study, 5% fat inclusion had no significant effect on growth performance, while phytase supplementation at 1500 FTU/kg improved feed intake (FI) and body weight gain (BWG). However, interactions between both factors additively increased FI from 804g to 1,221g, BWG from 630 g to 904 g, ileal phytate degradation by 44% and ileal P digestibility by 17%. Adding cellulose as filler in pellet-crumbled diet has diluted the nutrient concentration in 5% fat diet that eventually led to poorer FCR. However, phytase supplementation eliminated the negative effect of nutrient dilution by improving performance of chickens as good as those fed those fed 5% fat diet without cellulose addition. In the third study, a combination of 1500 FTU/kg phytase supplementation with 5% fat increased crop digesta MRT and improved phytate-P degradation compared to with 1% fat, providing evidence for the role of fat in improving phytase efficacy in broilers.     A noninvasive molecular approach: exploiting species-locus-specific PCR primers in defeating numts and DNA cross-contamination of cercopithecidae

    The lack of a standardized, noninvasive molecular approach to studying genetic aspects of primates has made it hard for primatologists to decode the evolutionary history of these species. Researchers must optimize their own techniques to fully exploit the available samples. Lack of species-locus-specific primers also contributes to difficulties in using noninvasive genetic samples. Thus, the objectives of this study were to develop a standardized technique to collecting samples noninvasively, propose newly designed species-locus-specific primers, and optimize conditions for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Macaca fascicularis, M. nemestrina, Trachypithecus cristatus, and T. obscurus. Nine new species-locus-specific primers for three different loci of mitochondrial DNA, namely D-loop, cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), and cytochrome b, were successfully designed. These primers proved to be efficient in amplifying larger datasets (up to ~1,000 bp) of the targeted species in the optimized PCR conditions. The species-locus-specific primers are able to anneal to host DNA alone in highly contaminated feces of highlighted species. They can also offer alternatives measures in avoiding contamination related to nuclear insertion of mitochondrial pseudogenes (numts)

    Integrating blended learning in the oral presentation classroom

    Blended learning is one of the recent approaches which offer some kind of independence on learning as it integrates face-to-face classroom teaching with online learning. The study aims at exploring the impact of blended learning method in teaching communicative skills to ESL learners. A mixed-method design was adopted for this study to discover the effects of blended learning approach on students’ learning outcomes and their learning experience. A group of 52 Polytechnic students were chosen and placed into two groups. The experimental group received the blended learning approach while the control group received face-to-face instruction. The experimental group used MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), a free course available online as part of their learning process. The achievements between the control group and the experimental group were compared to measure the potential of the blended learning approach. Data collected and analyzed were oral presentation scores from both groups, survey and in-depth interviews. Quantitative statistics revealed that there was statistical difference between the experimental group and the control group in the use of language and understanding of content. However, there was no statistical differences in the delivery component. In addition, the qualitative findings also indicated that students displayed positive perception towards the blended learning approach. Overall, findings from this study support the use of blended learning approach as it is found to be effective in enhancing learners’ communicative skills

    Malaysian women’s state of well-being: Empirical validation of a conceptual model

    The author carried out the present study to examine the determinants of Malaysian women’s well-being. Specifically, the author proposed a theoretical model of women’s roles and well-being—made up of roles, negative affectivity, conflict, and health—and statistically validated it in a group of women occupying both work and family roles (N = 389). Using a life-course approach (P. Moen, 1998) to roles and well-being, the author further examined the model in women of 3 different age groups (age of Group 1 = 20–29 years, age of Group 2 = 30–39 years, and age of Group 3 = 40 years and older). The results supported the proposed model, which showed reasonable fit when applied to the 3 groups of women. The results also indicated that the predictors of women’s wellbeing differ according to their respective age groups. The author discussed these findings in relation to the life-course approach to women’s roles

    Work-Family Conflict, Work- and Family-Role Salience, and Women's Well-Being

    The author considered both the direct effect and the moderator effect of role salience in the stress-strain relationship. In contrast to previous studies that have examined the effects of salience on well-being within specific social roles, the present study focused on the work-family interface. From a sample of 147 employed English women with children, the present results of the regression analyses showed that both effects are possible, depending on the outcome measures used. The author observed a direct effect of role salience in the prediction of job satisfaction; work salience was positively related to job satisfaction, over and above the main-effect terms of work-interfering-with-family (WIF) conflict and family-interfering-with-work (FIW) conflict. In contrast, the author found a moderator effect of role salience and conflict for symptoms of psychological distress. However, contrary to predictions, the author found that work salience exacerbated the negative impact of WIF conflict, rather than FIW conflict, on well-being. The author discussed these results in relation to the literature on work-family conflict, role salience, and the issue of stress-strain specificity
