DOES GENDER-BASED OCCUPATIONAL SEGREGATION AFFECT EMPLOYEES’ EARNINGS AND LABOUR SUPPLY IN SRI LANKA?

As a result of gender dominance in various occupations, each job becomes a job that is occupied more or less by the respective gender. It can be interpreted as a situation of occupational segregation based on gender. The main objective of the study is to identify how earnings and working hours of employees are affected due to gender based occupational segregation. Human Capital theory, Becker’s model, discrimination, and other feminist theories were grounded for the study. It uses an endogenous switching regression model to examine how the monthly earnings and weekly working hours of employees in male-dominated and female-dominated jobs differ with changes in selected variables. The study uses 29170 data to represent employees in Male-dominated, female-dominated, and gender-integrated jobs classified according to the percentage of men and women in each occupation. The findings show that there are significant earnings differentials and labour supply differences in terms of working hours due to occupational segregation. To promote the equality of labour market participation, organizations should give priority to gender-neutral recruitment opportunities, supporting parents in continuing work-life balance through adjustable work arrangements with the government career guidance support. In future research direction, it’s important to focus more on vertical occupational segregation

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE CHOICE OF SELF-EMPLOYMENT BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN IN SRI LANKA

Different characteristics and different roles of both men and women affect the existing gender disparities in self-employment choice in Sri Lanka. This study mainly focuses on comparing the determinants of self-employment choice between men and women in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Labour Force Survey conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics in 2018 was used as the main data source. Three binary logistic regression models were applied for analyzing. Based on the results, it was revealed that being a female has a significant and negative impact on self-employment choice in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Moors and the disabled have a higher tendency while tertiary educated people have a lower tendency towards self-employment for both men and women. Other demographic and health factors including ethnicity, age, marital status, disability, household size, socio-economic factors including level of education, vocational training, family income, digital literacy, geographical factors including residential sector and residential province also affect the self-employment choice for men and women. Finally, gender specific policies were suggested to promote self-employment in Sri Lanka by enhancing awareness, developing infrastructure facilities, introducing educational reforms and conducting training programmes at regional level. Keywords: Choice of Self-employment, Gender Differences, Determinants of Self-employment, Self-employment Policie

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF DETERMINATIONS OF RESERVATION WAGE EXPECTATIONS AMONG UNEMPLOYED MEN AND WOMEN IN SRI LANKA

The "reservation wage" concept indicates the minimum compensation a person is willing to accept when seeking employment. This study aims to determine how reservation wage expectations differ between unemployed men and women in Sri Lanka. This analysis used secondary data extracted from the Sri Lanka Labour Force Survey (2021), which was conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics, and encompasses a sample size of 1,567 total unemployed, comprising 739 unemployed males and 828 unemployed females. A semi-log model was applied separately to the unemployed men, the unemployed women and the total unemployed to achieve the study's objective. The results indicated that gender significantly influences reservation wage expectations among unemployed men and women. Compared with women, unemployed men have a higher reservation wage expectation. Noteworthy variables, including household size, age, and unemployment duration, exhibit varying degrees of insignificance in shaping reservation wage expectations for both genders. Finally, this study concluded that the reservation wage expectations among unemployed men and women in Sri Lanka are significantly affected by various demographic, household socio-economic and regional geographical factors. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers to foster gender equality and labour market inclusivity to reduce the gender gap in Sri Lanka

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
