Tapping Economies of Scale and Scope in Consumer Cooperation - A Case Analysis of Possible Cooperation among selected Cooperatives
No full textBecause of its narrow and negative perspective of safeguarding the interests of only poor consumers against unethical practices of the private traders, consumer cooperation in India seems to have failed, except probably in some isolated pockets. A number of social welfare functions like poverty alleviation and public distribution of essential items of consumption have been imposed on them at the cost of their basic economics. With the basic micro and macro-economic rationale for consumer cooperatives as a positive form of economic organization being lost sight of, they seem to be facing enormous problems both historically as well as currently in a era of economic liberalization. Their worries seem to have been compounded with the threat of impending competition from large private enterpriss - both domestic and foreign, which highlights the need for evolving strategies to rectivy their systemic weaknesses and tackling the competition head on. This case has attempted to document just such an initiative through a round table conference with several doyens of the consumer cooperative movement in India such as Warana Bazar and Amalsad Mandali as well as some fledging consumer cooperatives from West Bengal which are already in existence for some time or contemplating entry into this field. The roundtable conference organized in the spirit of Cooperation among Cooperatives attempted to evolve strategies to capture economies of scale and scope in order to take on the competition, as well as to facilitate dissemination of ideas and information across the country.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Paleomagnetism of the Samar Ophiolite: Implications for the Cretaceous sub-equatorial position of the Philippine island arc
No full textSamar island in the eastern part of Central Philippines is underlain by a complete ophiolite suite, the Samar Ophiolite. We present the first geochronological and paleomagnetic data for the Samar Ophiolite. Whole rock K-Ar dating of two basalt samples yielded an age of 100.2 ± 2.7 Ma and 97.9 ± 2.8 Ma. Thirteen sites in four localities yielded characteristic remanent magnetization with in situ direction of D = 340°, I = - 24°, k = 15, α95 = 11° and tilt-corrected direction of D = 342°, I = - 27°, k = 15, α95 = 11°. These values suggest that the ophiolitic basement rocks of Samar formed in the Late Cretaceous at a paleolatitude of 14°S ± 6°. The paleolatitude is several degrees south of the sub-equatorial positions calculated for the three other Mesozoic ophiolites of the Philippine Mobile Belt (PMB) whose paleomagnetism had been previously studied. The PMB ophiolites in eastern and central Philippines share a common age, geochemistry and paleolatitude with the Halmahera Ophiolite, suggesting that they originated from a Mesozoic supra-subduction zone that spanned a few degrees north of the equator to around 15°S
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
No full textWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Top management teams’ influence on strategic decision making and firms’ outcome in the case of Saudi Arabia’s private sector
No full textEven though firms face strong influential environmental forces, they ‘are in some important sense a reflection of their top managers’ (Pitcher and Smith, 2001: 2). Despite the vast amount of TMT research, there are several areas where research remains sparse, rare and, when available, generates conflicting results (Menz, 2012; Hambrick, 2007; and Higgs, 2006). Researchers have attributed the lack of empirical research to the difficulty in gaining access to TMTs, resulting in a huge number of studies relying on demographic data and/or archival documents.The primary objective of the current study, and the main gap addressed, was the investigation of the TMT strategic decision making process and organisational outcome in a new cultural context, drawing conclusions from qualitative primary data. In addressing the research gap, a pragmatic ontology with a critical realism epistemology was adopted. The multi-case research design was informed by Eisenhardt (1989)’s research design, with Hambrick and Mason (1984) UET as the theoretical lens applied. A qualitative methodology was applied, assisted by mixed methods. Strategies for this research were: semi structured interviews, a survey in the form of a pre-existing questionnaire (Higgs, 2006), and document analysis.The data was collected in a cross-sectional research framework, looking at a particular event at a specific time in fourteen different private organisations. The data was collected from four cities, covering the three main regions of Saudi Arabia. Thirty two interviews were conducted with TMT members, who then completed a short survey. Documents were collected for analysis.The TMTs in the sample were demographically heterogeneous (nationalities, education, age, tenure, and experience), with team sizes between two and three members. TMT diversity led to conflict and slowed the decision process down. Politics, power, internal alliances within the firms, and lobbying were used to overcome conflict. Decisions were challenged by market labour laws and a lack of skilled nationals. Centralisation of decisions was witnessed via the strong grip held by the Board of Directors. This resulted in strong Board influence in order to enforce decisions. The current study contributes to TMT literature, national context and practice. The limitations and future research are discussed
Expanding “Communities and Collections” in the K-State Research Exchange (K-REx) to benefit the K-State Community and Beyond
No full textKansas State University has used its institutional repository, the K-State Research Exchange (K-REx), to store and share its first year experience program, K-State First, and notably its common reading program, K-State First Book. We have done so with the aim that the accessibility and preservation of these documents ensures program stability, promotes engagement with first year programming, and provides the ability to foster growth,educational opportunities, and community building outside of K-State. Moving away from research concentrated repositories and taking a more holistic approach to scholarship, especially when realizing the pedagogical significance of collaborative campus programming, institutions can showcase, discover, preserve, and grow programs that shape campus communities and engagement.
This session will provide an overview of K-REx and spotlight the digital archive of the university’s first year experience program and common reading program, K-State First Book. We will discuss the benefits and challenges to expanding the purview of your repositories. We talkthrough the types of materials we decide to host in our repository and why we share what we do. We will also provide recommendations on new ways to evaluate what belongs in institutional repositories and how this diversity can benefit your program, your institution, the community, and others

Depolarization and decreased surface expression of K+ channels contribute to NSAID-inhibition of intestinal restitution
No full textNon-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) contribute to gastrointestinal ulcer formation by inhibiting epithelial cell migration and mucosal restitution; however, the drug-affected signaling pathways are poorly defined. We investigated whether NSAID inhibition of intestinal epithelial migration is associated with depletion of intracellular polyamines, depolarization of membrane potential (Em) and altered surface expression of K+ channels. Epithelial cell migration in response to the wounding of confluent IEC-6 and IEC-Cdx2 monolayers was reduced by indomethacin (100μM), phenylbutazone (100μM) and NS-398 (100μM) but not by SC-560 (1μM). NSAID-inhibition of intestinal cell migration was not associated with depletion of intracellular polyamines. Treatment of IEC-6 and IEC-Cdx2 cells with indomethacin, phenylbutazone and NS-398 induced significant depolarization of Em, whereas treatment with SC-560 had no effect on Em. The Em of IEC-Cdx2 cells was: −38.5±1.8mV under control conditions; −35.9±1.6mV after treatment with SC-560; −18.8±1.2mV after treatment with indomethacin; and −23.7±1.4mV after treatment with NS-398. Whereas SC-560 had no significant effects on the total cellular expression of Kv1.4 channel protein, indomethacin and NS-398 decreased not only the total cellular expression of Kv1.4, but also the cell surface expression of both Kv1.4 and Kv1.6 channel subunits in IEC-Cdx2. Both Kv1.4 and Kv1.6 channel proteins were immunoprecipitated by Kv1.4 antibody from IEC-Cdx2 lysates, indicating that these subunits co-assemble to form heteromeric Kv channels. These results suggest that NSAID inhibition of epithelial cell migration is independent of polyamine-depletion, and is associated with depolarization of Em and decreased surface expression of heteromeric Kv1 channels.ID: S0006295207001931; M3: Article; Accession Number: S0006295207001931; Author: L.C.
