Grammar Teaching Perceptions among Samar Barangay Officials: An Analysis of Variations
This study explores grammar into the perceptions of grammar teaching among Samar barangay officials in response to global and national demands for English proficiency. The primary objectives encompass evaluating officials' views on grammar teaching in local governance, identifying areas requiring improvement, and exploring potential variations based on gender. Employing a comparative descriptive research design, the study focuses on barangay officials in Western Samar, employing probability cluster sampling for inclusivity. A Likert-scale questionnaire, modified for reliability, guides both quantitative and comparative analyses. Results indicate commendable proficiency in language usage among officials. However, critical concerns surface regarding perceptions of grammar roles, emphasizing the necessity for targeted training interventions. While fair to good perceptions in instructional approaches, knowledge, and practices suggest a moderate level of competence, there is room for enhancement, particularly in explicit grammar teaching and problem-solving. Sex-based comparisons reveal nuanced variations, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions. In conclusion, the study recommends a comprehensive training program that seamlessly integrates effective communication strategies with role-specific grammar training. This approach aims to augment the overall effectiveness of Samar Barangay Officials in teaching grammar within the sphere of local governance. The study underscores the significance of gender-specific considerations in training initiatives, advocating for a more inclusive and effective enhancement of grammar-related roles among officials. Such interventions align with the broader goal of elevating English proficiency in response to the evolving linguistic demands at both national and global levels
Tapping Economies of Scale and Scope in Consumer Cooperation - A Case Analysis of Possible Cooperation among selected Cooperatives
Because of its narrow and negative perspective of safeguarding the interests of only poor consumers against unethical practices of the private traders, consumer cooperation in India seems to have failed, except probably in some isolated pockets. A number of social welfare functions like poverty alleviation and public distribution of essential items of consumption have been imposed on them at the cost of their basic economics. With the basic micro and macro-economic rationale for consumer cooperatives as a positive form of economic organization being lost sight of, they seem to be facing enormous problems both historically as well as currently in a era of economic liberalization. Their worries seem to have been compounded with the threat of impending competition from large private enterpriss - both domestic and foreign, which highlights the need for evolving strategies to rectivy their systemic weaknesses and tackling the competition head on. This case has attempted to document just such an initiative through a round table conference with several doyens of the consumer cooperative movement in India such as Warana Bazar and Amalsad Mandali as well as some fledging consumer cooperatives from West Bengal which are already in existence for some time or contemplating entry into this field. The roundtable conference organized in the spirit of Cooperation among Cooperatives attempted to evolve strategies to capture economies of scale and scope in order to take on the competition, as well as to facilitate dissemination of ideas and information across the country.
Employability and Occupational Alignment of College of Arts and Sciences Graduates of Samar State University
Higher education institutions are increasingly expected to demonstrate the employability and labor market relevance of their graduates. This study assessed the employability, occupational relevance, and early career outcomes of graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of Samar State University, covering cohorts from 2018 to 2021. Using a descriptive quantitative research design, data were collected from 485 graduates of the BS Information Technology, BS Information System, BS Psychology, and BS Statistics programs through a structured survey adapted from the Commission on Higher Education Graduate Tracer Study. Descriptive statistics and cross-tabulation were employed to analyze employment status, duration of job search, occupational distribution based on the Philippine Standard Occupational Classification, industry sector placement, initial earnings, and reasons for unemployment. Results indicated generally favorable employability outcomes, particularly among BS Statistics and BS Information Technology graduates, although variations across programs and cohorts were observed. While many graduates were employed in highly relevant professional and technical occupations, instances of occupational mismatch and underemployment persisted, especially among BS Information System graduates. Initial earnings were largely modest, reflecting entry-level employment and regional labor market conditions. Unemployment was primarily attributed to limited job opportunities, lack of work experience, and personal circumstances. The findings underscore the need for continuous curriculum enhancement, strengthened academe–industry linkages, and improved career development services to support effective school-to-work transitions and sustained graduate employability
L’architettura della moschea. Un’intervista con Salma Samar Damluji
The subject of mosque architecture is treated in this article through an interview held by Viola Bertini with Salma Samar Damluji. The article investigates the relationship of Damluji to mosque architecture from a personal perspective, as a landmark within the town and cityscape. The relationship of contemporary mosques and the movement of modern architecture in Baghdad, the city where the interviewee lived is associate with the historic influences, architecture, and crafts of original distinguished mosques like Samarra in Iraq. Bertini further probes into Damluji’s spectrum and development during her studies at the AA in London, with research delving into Islamic art, geometry, and calligraphy, through associations and junctures that consolidated her line of inquiry and inspiration towards "another" architecture. The specificity of the design is then analysed through Hassan Fathy’s Mosque Architecture Manual, which they jointly worked on in 1975–76. Throughout the discussion, the meaning and synchroneity of the mosque structure, physicality, and aesthetics in the Arab city, as well as Islamic discipline and knowledge, are revealed and enforced. Modern projects in the Islamic world are discussed, and examples are cited. This paper elaborates on the Shaykh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, which Damluji was responsible for, with the participation of a wide range of renowned artists, architects, craftsmen, and designers. In the related stories, the language and essence of creative design qualities are validated. An approach to understanding mosque
architecture through a much-needed critical analysis that reads into the historic past and contemporary present
Adapting Internship Programs to Global Disruptions: Lived Experiences of Student-Trainees in a Higher Education Institution in Samar, Philippines
Global disruptions have significantly impacted traditional internship programs, prompting higher education institutions to adopt modular and online approaches to sustain learning. This qualitative study explores the lived experiences of student-trainees in on-the-job training programs at a higher education institution in Samar during a period of restricted face-to-face interactions. Using a phenomenological design, in-depth interviews revealed six key themes: lack of experiential learning, teaching-learning gaps, resource constraints, abrupt transitions, challenges with independent learning, and time management difficulties. The participants’ narratives highlighted the absence of hands-on experiences and limited opportunities to bridge theory and practice, which hindered their preparedness for professional work. Resource challenges, including unreliable internet access and financial constraints, further compounded their struggles, while adapting to independent learning and managing personal distractions proved equally challenging. Despite these obstacles, the trainees demonstrated resilience and adaptability, emphasizing the need for innovative approaches to internship programs. This study recommends integrating virtual simulations, training faculty in remote teaching strategies, and implementing robust support systems to address students’ diverse needs. By adopting flexible and crisis-resilient frameworks, higher education institutions can enhance students’ learning outcomes and better prepare them for the demands of professional environments during disruptions. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on transforming educational practices to ensure continuity and effectiveness amidst global challenges

Demographic and Workplace Factors Affecting Absenteeism and Tardiness in a State University in Samar, Philippines
Absenteeism and tardiness pose significant challenges in higher education institutions (HEIs), particularly in rural settings where socio-economic factors and workplace conditions often exacerbate these issues. This study examined 138 employees in a rural HEI during the 2021–2022 academic year, analyzing personal variables such as age, sex, number of children, transportation mode, distance to work, and economic status. Results showed absenteeism was predominantly occasional, with 83.33% classified as occasional absentees, 12.32% as semi-habitual, and 4.35% as habitual absentees. Tardiness was more prevalent, with 60.87% occasional, 27.54% semi-habitual, and 11.59% habitual. Significant relationships were found between absenteeism and family-related factors, including age (p = 0.002), number of children (p = 0.001), and the average age of children (p = 0.000), highlighting caregiving responsibilities' impact. In contrast, tardiness showed no significant correlations with personal variables, suggesting stronger links to organizational factors and work habits. Tailored interventions, such as flexible work arrangements, childcare support, and wellness programs, can help alleviate caregiving burdens, promote punctuality, and improve workplace efficiency, fostering employee satisfaction and productivity in HEIs

Interactive Learning in Algebra: A Quasi-Experimental Study of MalMath and FX Algebra Solver
Algebra is foundational to mathematics education, underpinning advanced concepts and essential skills like problem-solving and logical reasoning. However, students often struggle with symbolic representation, logical thinking, and applying mathematical concepts. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools, such as MalMath and FX Algebra Solver, offer interactive, step-by-step solutions to address these challenges. This study used a pre-test, post-test non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental design to assess the effectiveness of these applications in improving algebraic achievement. Forty-two second-year BEED students from a state university in Samar, Philippines, were matched by sex, section, and average grades and assigned to experimental or comparison groups using MalMath or FX Algebra Solver, respectively. Both groups showed significant improvements in pre-test and post-test scores, with no significant difference in post-test outcomes, indicating both tools were equally effective. These findings highlight the potential of accessible, technology-based tools to enhance algebra learning and suggest further research on their long-term impacts and broader applications
Analysis of demersal fish assemblages in selected Philippine fishing grounds
This paper presents the results of analyses of demersal fish assemblages in various fishing grounds in the Philippines. Data from exploratory trawl surveys conducted in 1947 - 49 show that the 24 fishing grounds covered by the survey can be arranged along a gradient of substrate type (i.e. relative coral cover and sediment characteristics). These may be used to determine the species commonly caught in these grounds. A trend of increasing catch rates with decreasing water depth and increasing proportion of mud in the substrate was noted. Data from more recent systematic surveys in Samar Sea (1979 - 80), San Pedro Bay (1994 - 95) and Manila Bay (1992 - 93) were analyzed to examine spatio-temporal patterns in fish assemblages. In all 3 areas, the fish community was characterized by a large number of ubiquitous species, with Leiognathids comprising at least 28% of the total catch. In terms of habitat relations, depth was the primary factor in Samar Sea and San Pedro Bay, where transitions in fish assemblage composition were recognizable at certain depth ranges. In Manila Bay, however, species composition appears to be more related to location (inner versus outer portions of the bay). Analysis of data from five locations (Manila Bay, Tayabas Bay, Sorsogon Bay, Samar Sea and San Pedro Bay) extending from the western to the eastern portions of the country showed similar seasonality, with fish assemblage composition varying slightly during the monsoon season.Fishery resources, Demersal fisheries, Fishery surveys, Biomass, Population density, Shrimp fisheries, Catch/effort, Trawling, Population characteristics, ISEW, Philippines,
