Salsa magic: an exploratory netnographic analysis of the salsa experience
This is a paper about the promise of salsa dancing as unfolding social drama. We argue that a turn to dance offers much potential to reinvigorate ways of theorizing consumer culture, necessitating we take seriously talk around such experiences. Based on a netnographic analysis, which is inspired by the informative work of Kozinets (1997, 1998, 2001). We reveal how dance is a reflexive form of knowledge enacted in and through our bodies, where the settled and fixed becomes disturbed. Dance then makes possible shared passions, exhilarations and desires lacking from people's everyday lives granting them a space for expression
On emotions and salsa : some thoughts on dancing to rethink consumers
Dance forms are a big business, highly marketable commoditized cultural universes, with a plethora of markets constructed around their spirit, vitality and possibilities. In this paper, we explore one particular dance form, that of Salsa, arguing that as consumer researchers we look for a more vibrant vocabulary and mindset with which to capture the experiential and transcendental nature of such social associations. We demonstrate that the metaphor of dancing is useful to revitalize our notions of consumer actions; taking them out of the grey mundane of calculative and rational action into the possibilities of emotional economies constructed around the effervescence and vitality of the social (cf. Maffesoli, [1996])
cicirello/Chips-n-Salsa: Chips-n-Salsa, version 2.0.0
About Chips-n-Salsa
Chips-n-Salsa is a Java library of customizable, hybridizable, iterative, parallel, stochastic, and self-adaptive local search algorithms.
[2.0.0] - 2020-09-16
First release available through Maven Central. New major release, 2.0.0, due to incompatible interface changes within the org.cicirello.search.ss package. Code that doesn't depend upon any of the stochastic sampling search algorithm implementations should be unaffected by these changes, and in those cases should be safe to simply upgrade to this new version without need to change anything in dependent code.
Added
An interface Partial to enable generalizing the various stochastic sampling search algorithms from optimizing the space of permutations to more general types.
A method was added to ConstructiveHeuristic for creating empty Partials of the appropriate length needed by the heuristic.
Class HeuristicSolutionGenerator, which is a generalization of existing class HeuristicPermutationGenerator, for constructing solutions to optimization problems via constructive heuristics (HeuristicPermutationGenerator now extends this new class).
PartialIntegerVector class to support using stochastic sampling search algorithms to generate vectors of integers.
BoundedIntegerVector and BoundedRealVector classes added to the package org.cicirello.search.representations
Changed
ConstructiveHeuristic and IncrementalEvaluation now have a type parameter.
ValueBiasedStochasticSampling, HeuristicBiasedStochasticSampling, and AcceptanceBandSampling also now have a type parameter.
All of the scheduling heuristics were modified based on interface changes.
Renamed ConstructiveHeuristic.completePermutationLength to ConstructiveHeuristic.completeLength to be more general.
Minor edits to the example program SchedulingWithVBSS related to other changes (added missing type parameter to construction of the ValueBiasedStochasticSampling instance to avoid compiler warning).
Workflows and pom.xml to enable publishing to both Maven Central as well as Github Package
Language and transnationalism : language discourse in transnational Salsa communities of practice
Language ideologies in contemporary Western societies are characterised by a strong influence of the idea that one language ‘pertains’ to one culture. Yet, cultural developments of globalisation, such as migration, the construction of transnational networks or global mass media, question national frameworks of culture and language.
In this thesis, after reviewing the field of language ideology and discussing historical examples of the development of national language discourse, language ideologies in a transnational context are examined. Using ethnographic research methods and a discursive approach to interview data, concepts and ideas revolving around language of transnational Communities of Practice constituted through Salsa dancing are analysed. Due to its connections to the Latin American cultural space, the practice of Salsa dancing in non-Latin contexts intrinsically constructs transnational ties. Different Salsa Communities of Practice are studied in Sydney, Australia, and Frankfurt, Germany. Interestingly, different local communities show very different ideologies concerning the role of language, multilingualism, concepts of authenticity or influences of capitalist discourse. The cross-national approach allows studying the influence of different national discourses on the formation of local ideologies in transnational contexts.
Thus, next to scrutinising the traditional concept of a ‘language’ and its relevance in a transnational age, the theoretical aim of this study is to analyse the interaction of discourses from different realms – local, regional, national, transnational – in the formation of contemporary discourses on language. These construct new symbolic meanings of language that co-exist next to the national concept of the relationship of language and culture, so that a multiplication of language boundaries can be considered to be a characteristic trait of contemporary language discourse

Regularity of the free boundary in two-phase problems for linear elliptic equations
In this paper we complete the study of the regularity of the free boundary in two-phase problems for linear
elliptic operators started in [M.C. Cerutti, F. Ferrari, S. Salsa, Two-phase problems for linear elliptic operators
with variable coefficients: Lipschitz free boundaries are C1,γ , Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 171 (2004)
329–348]. In particular we prove that Lipschitz and flat free boundaries (in a suitable sense) are smooth. As
byproduct, we prove that Lipschitz free boundaries are smooth in the case of quasilinear operators of the
form div(A(x, u)∇u) with Lipschitz coefficients
Preface paper to the semi-arid land-surface-atmosphere (SALSA) program special issue
The Semi-Arid Land-Surface-Atmosphere Program (SALSA) is a multi-agency, multi-national research effort that seeks to evaluate the consequences of natural and human-induced environmental change in semi-arid regions. The ultimate goal of SALSA is to advance scientific understanding of the semi-arid portion of the hydrosphere-biosphere interface in order to provide reliable information for environmental decision making. SALSA approaches this goal through a program of long-term, integrated observations, process research, modeling, assessment, and information management that is sustained by cooperation among scientists and information users. In this preface to the SALSA special issue, general program background information and the critical nature of semi-arid regions is presented. A brief description of the Upper San Pedro River Basin, the initial location for focused SALSA research follows. Several overarching research objectives under which much of the interdisciplinary research contained in the special issue was undertaken are discussed. Principal methods, primary research sites and data collection used by numerous investigators during 1997-1999 are then presented. Scientists from about 20 US, five European (four French and one Dutch), and three Mexican agencies and institutions have collaborated closely to make the research leading to this special issue a reality. The SALSA Program has served as a model of interagency cooperation by breaking new ground in the approach to large scale interdisciplinary science with relatively limited resources
