Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Evaluación del potencial energético y bioactivo de residuos generados en la producción y transformación de la uva
En los últimos años se ha manifestado un interés creciente en el aprovechamiento de la biomasa generada como residuo de los procesos industriales, por su fácil accesibilidad y características físico-químicas. Este aprovechamiento, además de contribuir con el medio ambiente, está enfocado a dar o mejorar el valor económico de los residuos. En la producción y transformación de la uva son generados residuos que poseen características de interés para el uso agronómico, farmacéutico/cosmético y energético. Sin embargo, en Colombia se encuentra poca información referente a este tema y en la práctica, el potencial que tienen estos residuos no es explotado. Por lo anterior, el presente documento tiene como objetivo evaluar el potencial energético y bioactivo de los residuos generados en el cultivo de la vid (sarmientos) y en la producción de pulpa de uva (hollejos, escobajos y semillas) con la finalidad de proponer procesos que aumenten el valor económico de los residuos. La metodología que se desarrolla, está direccionada en cuatro puntos: Caracterización de la materia prima, determinación del potencial energético de productos obtenidos a partir de los residuos, evaluación del potencial bioactivo y análisis económico-ambiental de procesos donde los residuos son empleados para la generación de energía y obtención de compuestos fenólicos. Los principales resultados indican que las semillas y hollejos obtenidos en la producción de pulpa de uva, tienen las mejores características físicoquímicas para ser empleados para la producción de energía (combustión, pirolisis y gasificación) y la extracción de compuestos fenólicos, respectivamente. Los escobajos y semillas presentan la mayor concentración de compuestos fenólicos totales y capacidad antioxidante. Sin embargo, es necesario realizar estudios que permitan determinar la naturaleza de estos compuestos fenólicos para conocer su actividad individual. Respecto al análisis económico y ambiental, la extracción de compuestos fenólicos es el proceso con mayor viabilidad económica y la gasificación muestra menor potencial de impacto ambiental. Por tanto, se recomienda explorar diferentes tecnologías de extracción de compuestos fenólicos, con la finalidad de encontrar un balance entre el potencial económico y el impacto ambiental (Texto tomado de la fuente)Recently, there has been a growing interest to exploit waste biomass from industrial processes due to its easy accessibility and physicochemical characteristics. In this way, the process profit can benefit from waste while reducing the process environmental impact. Previous research has indicated that waste from grape production and processing has interesting characteristics from agronomic, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and energetic perspectives. However, this field has barely been investigated in Colombia and then residues’ potential is not currently exploited. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the energy and bioactive potential of waste generated in the cultivation of vine shoots and production of grape juice (skins, stalks and seeds), in order to propose process alternatives to exploit the waste economic value. For the investigation a sequential methodology is employed: 1. Characterization of raw materials, 2. Energetic indexes evaluation of products made from waste, 3. Determination of bioactive potential of the waste and 4. Economic and environmental evaluation of proposed processes to exploit waste potential. Characterization of the raw material is performed by quantifying the major components (i.e. cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, extractives and total ash), proximal analysis, ultimate analysis, high heat value and thermogravimetric analysis. Secondly, energetic indexes are determined when the biomass is subject to compression to produce briquettes and devolatilization process for char production. Additionally, a kinetic study of the combustion process is performed in order to reveal the reaction mechanisms. In the third stage, the bioactive potential of the residues is assessed through the total phenolic components concentration and antioxidant activity. Those are determined using spectrophotometric techniques. Using the results from the previous stages, gasification and phenolic extraction were identified as promising processes to exploit the waste potential. Aspen Plus® is used to simulate those processes performance from mass and energy points of view. The processes economic potential and environmental impact are assessed employing WAR GUI® and Aspen Icarus Process Evaluator®, respectively. The laboratory results shown that seeds and skins from grape juice production have the best physicochemical properties to be used for energy production (i.e. combustion, pyrolysis and gasification) and phenolic components extraction (i.e. high value phenolic components). Seeds and stalks presents the highest total phenolic components concentration and antioxidant activity, respectively. However, further research is required to determine the nature of the phenolic substances and their individual bioactive activity. From the simulation results, phenolic component extraction from seeds and skins shown the best economic potential and gasification of the waste mixtures present the lower environmental impact.
