Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Get PDF[spa] A) PresentaciónFrente a los fallos que se producen en el razonamiento matemático de los alumnos de secundaria, y siendo un problema que afecta a un gran número de ellos, nos propusimos investigar la determinación de los niveles de razonamiento de los alumnos de la educación secundaria centrándonos en "Alumnos Talentosos en situación de Éxito Académico". B) ObjetivosNos fijamos como objetivos averiguar, en el caso de alumnos catalogados como "Alumnos Talentosos en situación de Éxito Académico", si:1- ¿El sistema educativo en el que están escolarizados, tiene alguna influencia sobre su modo de razonar o sobre su nivel de razonamiento matemático?2- Basándonos en el modelo de Van Hiele, ¿En qué nivel de razonamiento matemático operan estos alumnos? a. ¿Influye el sistema educativo?3- ¿Existe una intervención voluntaria y reflexiva por parte del profesor para facilitar su proceso de aprendizaje? 4- ¿Es adecuado el Modelo de Van Hiele para determinar el nivel de razonamiento matemático en el que operan?C) MuestraPara definir nuestra muestra hemos aceptado como válido y definitivo, el "veredicto" de la "Comunidad Pedagógica" sobre las capacidades y las competencias de los alumnos. Por lo tanto, los "Informes del Equipo Docente", los "Boletines de Notas", las "Apreciaciones del equipo de Asistencia Psicopedagógica", han sido elementos fundamentales sobre los cuales nos hemos apoyado para confeccionar la muestra definitiva. Hemos descartado voluntariamente las "pruebas tipificadas" para detectar "competencias o aptitudes ocultas" de los alumnos. D) ContextoLa investigación se desarrolla en Centros Educativos ubicados en la Provincia de Barcelona, con alumnos catalogados como "Alumnos en Situación de Éxito Académico" y escolarizados en tres IES diferentes. Elegimos los IES de forma que los referentes socioeconómicos y culturales sean diferentes. Así tenemos un IES del sistema educativo español, otro del sistema francés y un último del sistema italiano. E) Resultados y PerspectivasNuestra investigación puede ofrecer a los profesionales de la docencia, a los docentes de la Enseñanza Secundaria Obligatoria sobretodo, unas nuevas orientaciones metodológicas para tratar de mejorar el aprendizaje matemático de los alumnos, con intervenciones pedagógicas "intracurriculares". Podemos añadir que podrá contribuir a la mejora de los "parámetros instruccionales" y también a la mejora del proceso evaluativo. Además, nuestro trabajo, a pesar de estar orientada hacia la investigación de los procesos de razonamiento matemático del alumno de la educación secundaria con un alto nivel de éxito académico, no tiene porque no poderse generalizar a los demás casos de alumnos con rendimiento menor o aplicarse a casos de alumnos con dificultades de aprendizaje. Los resultados obtenidos permiten también pensar que, utilizando el modelo de Van Hiele en la enseñanza de las matemáticas, se puede establecer una forma de tratamiento diferenciado, dentro del grupo-clase, para alumnos con capacidades diversas. Queda abierto todo un campo de investigación, en el aula, sobre el tipo de razonamiento matemático y sobre el nivel de razonamiento en el que operan los alumnos. Estos resultados también proporcionan una base más fiable a tener en cuenta a la hora de diseñar estrategias de evaluación o de aprendizaje. La poca o nula influencia de la edad biológica o de los tipos de enseñanza le confieren además una "generalizabilidad" muy interesante para el profesional de la educación. Los resultados que hemos obtenido se ajustan a los resultados esperables y cuadran con lo previsto. Por último, este trabajo incita a explorar un poco más el campo del razonamiento matemático y la utilización del Modelo de Van Hiele en la enseñanza de las matemáticas.Para profundizar en el tema, recomendamos promover y apoyar investigaciones que permitan generalizar los resultados hallados, usando muestras más amplias, trabajando con tiempos de observación más largos o incluyendo otros sistemas educativos.[eng] a) Presentation Against the failures that take place in the mathematical reasoning of the students of secondary, and being a frequent problem, we started investigation to determination of reasoning levels of the secondary education students being centered in the "Gifted and Talented Students in situation of Academic Success".b) Objectives To find out, in the case of these students, if: 1-The educative system has some influence on its way to reason or its level of mathematical reasoning? 2- Basing us on the model of Van Hiele, in what level of mathematical reasoning they operate these students? a) It influences the educative system? 3- Exists a voluntary and reflective intervention on the part of the professor to facilitate its process of learning? 4- Is adapted the Model of Van Hiele to determine the level of Mathematical reasoning in which they operate?C) Sample In order to define the sample we based on the "verdict" of the "Pedagogical Community": Psychologic and pedagogical reports, Academic reports, Qualifications, Appreciations. We voluntarily discard the accomplishment of typified tests.D) Context The investigation is developed in located Educative Centers in the Province of Barcelona. We choose educative centers with socioeconomics and culturals parameters differents. One is Spanish educative system, another one of the French system and the last of the Italian educative system.E) Results and Perspective Our investigation can offer to the professionals of teaching new methodologic directions to try to improve the mathematical learning of the students, with pedagogical interventions within the classroom and without modifications of the taught curriculum. An investigation field is open everything, in the classroom, on the type of mathematical reasoning and the level of reasoning in which they operate the students. In order to deepen in the subject, we recommended to promote and to support investigations that allow to generalize the found results, using ampler samples, working with longer times of observation or including other educative systems
