Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. The comparability of the official German and French price indices is affected by significant methodological differences. These differences make the weight of rents much higher in the German index, which takes into account the rents that owner-occupiers would pay themselves if they had to rent their housing at market rates. The differences also mean that insurance services are tracked in the German index, whereas they still elude the French index. In addition, the two indices have highly different ways of observing health service prices.
After common statistical processing of these differences, the rate of inflation is still substantially lower in France than in Germany, but the gap narrows in 1992 and 1993. It would most likely have been less than one point for these two years, as opposed to 1 .8 points in 1 992 and 1 .6 points in 1993. The consideration of health expenditure, excluded from the comparison as the statistical reconciliation was beyond the scope of this study, would probably have contributed to a further slight reduction in a real inflation differential estimated at 0.8 points exclusively in favour of France in 1993.Des indices de prix à la consommation plus comparables entre la France et la RFA
Des différences méthodologiques notables affectent la comparabilité des indices de prix officiels allemand et français. Ainsi le poids des loyers est très supérieur dans l'indice allemand, car ce dernier prend en compte les loyers que se verseraient les propriétaires occupant leurs logements s'ils avaient à les louer aux conditions du marché. Ainsi les prix des services d'assurance sont-ils suivis dans l'indice allemand, alors qu'ils échappent encore à l'indice français. Ainsi encore les prix des services de santé sont-ils suivis très différemment dans les deux indices.
Après un traitement statistique commun de ces différences, le rythme d'inflation reste nettement inférieur en France par rapport à l'Allemagne, mais l'écart est réduit en 1992 et 1993 : il aurait été très vraisemblablement inférieur à un point au cours de ces deux années, contre 1 ,8 point en 1 992 et 1 ,6 point en 1 993. La prise en compte des dépenses de santé, exclues de la comparaison car les rapprochements statistiques étaient hors de portée de cette étude, aurait sans doute contribué à réduire encore un peu en 1993 un différentiel réel d'inflation estimé à 0,8 point seulement en faveur de la France.Indices de precios al consumo mas comparables entre Francia y la RFA
Unas fuertes diferencias metodolôgicas afectan la comparabilidad de los indices de precios oficiales alemân y francés. De hecho, la importancia de los alquileres es muy superior en el indice alemân, ya que este toma en cuenta los alquileres que pagarîan los propietarios que residen en la propia vivienda si tuvieran que alquilarla en las condiciones del mercado. Asimismo en Alemania, se observan los precios de los servicios de seguro, mientras que hasta ahora escapan al control del indice francés. Los precios de los servicios de sanidad también se observan de manera muy distinta segûn los dos îndices.
Después del tratamiento estadistico comûn de dichas diferencias, el ritmo de inflaciôn sigue siendo con mucho inferior en Francia respecta a Alemania, pero la diferencia se reduce en 1 993 y 1 994 : habri'a sido con toda certeza inferior a 1 punto en el curso de estas dos anos, en vez del 1 ,8 punto registrado en 1 992 y del 1 ,6 punto de 1 993. La toma en consideraciôn de los gastos de sanidad, descartados de la comparaciôn por no estar a nuestro alcance taies equivalencias estadi'sticas, habrfa contribuido a lo mejor a reducir aûn mas en 1993 un diferencial real de inflaciôn valorado en tan solo un 0,8 punto a favor de Francia.Buchwald Wolfgang, Saglio Alain.
