Who and to whom speaks in poetic litany? On the Wojciech Bąk’s poem “The Prayer to Mary the Mother”

    No full text
The Wojciech Bąk’s poem The Prayer to Mary the Mother (Modlitwa do Marii Matki) represents the main communicative structure of the genre of litany. As a litany, the text has not a single formal subject, but belongs to a triple addressor instance (the subjects of tradition, community and the faithful) and is directed to a quintuple addressee instance (the faithful, the divine mediator, God as the Supreme Witness, God as the indirect addressee, God as the direct addressee). The triple addressor instance imposes many limitations on the author. The article describes the three liberty axes of the author: within the linear structure limitations (the syntactic axis), within the formula paradigm limitations (the paradigmatic axis) and the axis of the traditional formula translation (the exegetic axis). While the church litanies tend to standardize the translation of the formulae, the poetry attaches more importance to the exegetic axis, enlivening the prayer language and enabling a dialogue among different ways of understanding the given formula

W pierwszym rozdziale pracy przedstawiam różnice w ukształtowaniu pojęcia i zjawiska poezji konkretnej w wymienionych trzech obszarach językowych, a także szkicuję definicję wąsko rozumianej poezji konkretnej. W drugim rozdziale, teoretyczno-metodologicznym, zarysowuję kulturową koncepcję tekstu pisanego oraz propozycję literaturoznawczego studium książki. Natomiast dalsze rozdziały pracy stanowią studia pięciu tomików poetyckich: 33 konstellationen Eugena Gomringera (Szwajcaria 1960); zeichen Heinza Gappmayra (Austria 1962); canal stripe series 3 Iana Hamiltona Finlaya (Szkocja 1964); KLEPSYDRY Stanisława Dróżdża (Polska 1967, 1990); bruchsünden und todstücke Witolda Wirpszy (tł. Maria Kurecka, Niemcy 1967). W tle ukazywane są także relacje między poezją konkretną, poezją lingwistyczną i poezją języka. The dissertation is based on the material of early concrete poetry, and specifically on poetic books that were created in German-, English-, and Polish-language areas in the 1960s. The thesis is devoted to concretist books of poetry, that is the publications in which concrete poetry is united with the project and realization of the book. This phenomenon has not been described so far. Yet, as I attempt to show, the books of concrete poetry played an important role in shaping the poetics of concretism, while some elements of these books became a part of this poetics. In the first chapter, I discuss the differences in the functioning of the notion and phenomenon of concrete poetry in the three language areas mentioned above, and present my definition of concrete poetry. In the second chapter, I sketch a culture-based concept of the written text and present this dissertation’s methodology of literary case studies of books. Each of the next five chapters is a study of a book of poetry: 33 konstellationen by Eugen Gomringer (Switzerland 1960); zeichen by Heinz Gappmayr (Austria 1962); canal stripe series 3 by Ian Hamilton Finlay (Scotland 1964); KLEPSYDRA by Stanisław Dróżdż (Poland 1967, 1990); bruchsünden und todstücke by Witold Wirpsza (tr. Maria Kurecka, Germany 1967). In these chapters the relationships between concrete, linguistic and language poetry are also examined

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
