CoCoa: A Linked Network Visualization System of Co-citation and Co-author Relationships
We usually use a text-based search engine while surveying research papers. Such search systems have difficulties for novice researchers in case they do not know appropriate keywords or do not understand the positions of papers. Many visualization tools of citation networks have been proposed to help this task. These tools demonstrated that not only text information of papers but citation relationships and co-author relationships also are helpful clues for research survey. We propose CoCoa, a linked network visualization of co-citation and co-author relationships for surveying research papers. Our system visualizes both citation and co-author networks at the same time. To make comparison and grasp of correspondence between co-citation and co-author networks easier, the system treats both a paper and an author as bags of words and cluster them into topics applying LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) at the same time. Based on the clustering result, it places the clusters of a citation network by a hybrid force-directed and space-filling algorithm. The position of topic clusters in the networks would have an influence on the correspondence of a particular topic in the networks. Our system extracts the clusters which consist of the common combinations of topics in two networks. Then it reuses the positions of the clusters in a citation network as the initial cluster positions of a co-author network, supposing there are a large number of authors.EuroVis 2019 - Short PapersText Visualization and Application
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Performance Tradeoffs in Shared-memory Platform Portable Implementations of a Stencil Kernel
Building on a significant amount of current research that examines the idea of platform-portable parallel code across different types of processor families, this work focuses on two sets of related questions. First, using a performance analysis methodology that leverages multiple metrics including hardware performance counters and elapsed time on both CPU and GPU platforms, we examine the performance differences that arise when using two common platform portable parallel programming approaches, namely OpenMP and VTK-m, for a stencil-based computation, which serves as a proxy for many different types of computations in visualization and analytics. Second, we explore the performance differences that result when using coarserand finer-grained parallelism approaches that are afforded by both OpenMP and VTK-m.Eurographics Symposium on Parallel Graphics and VisualizationVolume

Visual Analysis of Text Annotations for Stance Classification with ALVA
The automatic detection and classification of stance taking in text data using natural language processing and machine learning methods create an opportunity to gain insight about the writers’ feelings and attitudes towards their own and other people’s utterances. However, this task presents multiple challenges related to the training data collection as well as the actual classifier training. In order to facilitate the process of training a stance classifier, we propose a visual analytics approach called ALVA for text data annotation and visualization. Our approach supports the annotation process management and supplies annotators with a clean user interface for labeling utterances with several stance categories. The analysts are provided with a visualization of stance annotations which facilitates the analysis of categories used by the annotators. ALVA is already being used by our domain experts in linguistics and computational linguistics in order to improve the understanding of stance phenomena and to build a stance classifier for applications such as social media monitoring
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
