Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

This thesis focuses on the study of a structure of permanent magnet electric motor which reduces the amount used of permanent magnets composed of rare earths and which can be used in industrial applications. In the first part of the research work, it is shown that the permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance machine is a good alternative. A parametric analyse is realised using a finite element modelling in order to highlight the peculiarities of its electromagnetic behaviour. Then, an innovative multi-physic analytical modelling for the system inverter-motor is detailed in order to evaluate its performances in a reasonable computational time. The multi-physic models presented in this work concern the inverter and motor. They integrate the electromagnetic, electric, energetic, thermal, mechanic, and techno-economic aspects. The multi-physical model of the electric machine is validated by means of tests carried out on a prototype. The model of the system which has been developed is used in a design procedure by optimization of drive systems. For this purpose, an original optimization approach is presented for the simultaneous design of two applications by imposing the constraint of using the same magnetic lamination. On one hand it is an application of fixed speed and on the other hand an application of electric traction. The optimization method used is a type of differential evolution optimization. The results of the optimizations realised determine the optimal designs or the optimal compromise with Pareto front which deal with both applications. Finally, this thesis has placed the permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance machine among structures of machines with great industrial potential

The work presented in this thesis aims at the modelling and optimisation of a set Converter-Machine that is intended to run at high speeds. The first part is a state of the art of the conception methodologies related to the optimal design of drives and investigates the particularities of high speed operations. Then, an analytic and multiphysic modelling of the elements of the system is performed. But, in order to carry out a global optimal conception, the significant interactions between the various elements of the system must be modelled. This is achieved through a precise electrical model – that is the core of the characterization of the interactions – involving an original harmonic approach. From this follows a modelling of the interdependences between inverter and machine in the system losses and in the torque quality. The models are then associated with a genetic algorithm according to a hybrid methodology of conception involving analytical and finite-element models. Finally, this procedure is applied to the design of two drives of which the motor is a PMSM with circumferentially magnetised magnets. These two cases have been successfully handled and clearly show the assets of a “System” approach for the design of drives. In addition, the morphologies of the optimal machines are analysed according to their rotation speed. This analysis highlights some interesting abilities of this kind of machines – in high speed – regarding the magnetic and mechanical behaviours, and the rotor losses

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Electromechanical actuators optimization used in thermal engine air flow regulation

    No full text
The present work deals with the development of limited motion actuators dedicated to the air flow regulation of internal combustion engines. Because of the recent European Standard applied to car manufacturers, new conceptions of internal combustion engines need a new air flow management such as the low pressure exhaust gas recirculation. According to a state of art on electromechanical actuators that manage the combustive flow, there are mainly two electric topologies for rotary movements: the first one is an indirect drive which is composed of a brushed DC motor associated with a reduction spur gear set, the second one is a direct drive with a brushless DC motor. The topologic analysis carried out in order to design these actuators is based on a multi-physics approach involving mechanical, electrical, magnetic, thermal behaviours and control laws. With requirements, four magnetic topologies have been modelized in linear behaviour and optimized to minimize the external volume. Each actuator is composed of two bipolar permanent magnets on the rotor and two polar teeth on the magnetic core. With an attractive criteria per volume unit torque for a limited stroke application, one of them is chosen to minimize the electrical energy consumption. In order to compare the results of this optimized actuator, a brushed motor and a two reduction stage gear set are modelized and optimized with the aim of minimizing the energy consumption with the same required performances. This approach associates physical and dynamical constraints on actuator designs and contributes to realize a global optimization of machine, power electronics and control law
