High frequency techniques for detection of Majorana zero modes in hybrid InAs/Al nanowires

    No full text
Topological quantum computing has traveled a long road, from theoretical proposals to recently becoming an experimental reality. Starting from the first set of experiments performed in Delft in 2012 by Mourik et al., several other groups reported data consistent with Majorana bound states in a one-dimensional superconductor-semiconductor system. This was quickly followed by the advances in the nanofabrication methods, that led to the improved quality of devices with better resolved transport signatures going as far as the observation of exponential energy splitting by Albrecht et al. as a strong support for Majorana bound states. In topological quantum computing a well defined quantum state could be destroyed b yphysical processes that change the parity of the superconductor. For example, a quasiparticle entering the islands from one of the outer parts of the system can take the qubit out of the computational subspace. Protection against such errors requires qubit manipulation and readout on a time scale shorter than the typical parity switching and internal dynamics of the system. This contribution in a form of PhD thesis further investigates hybrid one dimensional structures as a potential future platform for topological quantum information processing. However, differently than in the previous theses and publications, here low frequency transport makes only a small part of characterization methods. Instead, the work concerns with the development and implementation of high frequency measurement techniques for detection, readout and eventually in the future, manipulation of Majorana zero modes in hybrid InAs/Al nanowires. In particular, fast radio frequency nanowire-based charge sensors working in magnetic fields up to 1 T both for state readout and gate-space mapping are realized. Later on, dispersive sensing results in InAs/Al nanowires are presented laying the foundation for the compac

Author: Deividas Mikalauskas Title: analysis of variables affecting computed tomography pulmonary angiography quality. Aim of the study: to evaluate the effect different variables have on computed tomography pulmonary angiography quality. Objectives: 1. To determine relation between patient characteristics and computed tomography pulmonary angiography quality. 2. To determine relation between technical variables and computed tomography pulmonary angiography quality. Methods: 65 patients with suspected pulmonary embolism, who undergone computed tomography pulmonary angiography in Radiology Diagnostics Center in 2016, were analyzed in this retrospective study. Data was collected from registration books, radiology imaging databases and cardiology PACS system. Results: significant difference of median contrast enhancement in pulmonary artery was found between men and women (t=3,074; p<0,05), where men's median was 480,15±184,63 HU and women's - 628,88±213,12 HU. Median contrast enhancement in pulmonary artery and descending aorta is higher in patients with central vein catheter, compared with peripheral catheter group (p<0,05). Positive correlation was found between patient age and median contrast enhancement in pulmonary artery (r=0,445; p<0,05), between intravenous catheter diameter and median contrast enhancement in pulmonary artery (r=0,343; p<0,05) and between heart ejection fraction and median contrast enhancement in descending aorta (r=0,288; p<0,05). Conclusions: 1. Median contrast enhancement in pulmonary artery and descending aorta is higher in women. Positive correlation was determined between patient age and median contrast enhancement in pulmonary artery, between median contrast enhancement in descending aorta and left ventricle ejection fraction. Negative correlation was determined between median contrast enhancement in pulmonary artery and patient weight, between median contrast enhancement in descending aorta and patient height and pulmonary artery diameter. 2. Median contrast enhancement in pulmonary artery and descending aorta is higher in patients with central vein catheter, compared with peripheral catheter group. Positive correlation was found between median contrast enhancement in pulmonary artery and intravenous catheter diameter

    Destructive Little-Parks Effect in a Full-Shell Nanowire-Based Transmon

    No full text
A semiconductor transmon with an epitaxial Al shell fully surrounding an InAs nanowire core is investigated in the low EJ/EC regime. Little-Parks oscillations as a function of flux along the hybrid wire axis are destructive, creating lobes of reentrant superconductivity separated by a metallic state at a half quantum of applied flux. In the first lobe, phase winding around the shell can induce topological superconductivity in the core. Coherent qubit operation is observed in both the zeroth and first lobes. Splitting of parity bands by coherent single-electron coupling across the junction is not resolved beyond line broadening, placing a bound on Majorana coupling, EM/h<10 MHz, much smaller than the Josephson coupling EJ/h∼4.7 GHz.QRD/Kouwenhoven La

Perkančiosios organizacijos diskrecijos panaudojimas nutraukiant viešojo pirkimo sutartį dėl esminio jos pažeidimo

This publication is a scholarly research on two separate yet interconnected legal categories: the discretion of the contracting authorities in public procurement and their right to use a unilateral termination of the public contract for the material breach as a remedy. The author hereby contends that there is a two-phase test which must be used in each case when the question of discretion arises. Moreover, the author believes that the latter cognitive tool must be implemented during the both at the time of the procurement procedures and amid the execution of the public contract. The author also argues that the provisions of the Civil Code must not be solely referred to in cases of termination of a public contract and that the procurement principles must always be deployed alongside to make a rational decision regarding the exit of the public contract.Šia publikacija siekiama išanalizuoti atskirai ir tuo pačiu sujungti dvi savarankiškas teisines kategorijas: perkančiųjų organizacijų diskreciją viešuosiuose pirkimuose ir jų teisę pasinaudoti vienašaliu pirkimo sutarties nutraukimu dėl esminio pažeidimo kaip teisių gynimo priemone. Straipsnyje teigiama, kad viešųjų pirkėjų diskrecijos teisėtumui pagrįsti taikytinas dviejų pakopų testas, kuris turi būti taikomas ne tik viešojo pirkimo procedūrų stadijai, bet ir pirkimo sutarties vykdymo etape. Straipsnio autorius įrodinėja, kad perkančiosios organizacijos, siekdamos pasinaudoti vienašalio sutarties nutraukimo galimybe, visais atvejais Civilinio kodekso nuostatas turi derinti su viešųjų pirkimų principais

Idea of (anti)imperialism in joseph conrad's novel "heart of darkness".

Idea of (anti)Imperialism in Joseph Conrad's Novel "Heart of Darkness" Joseph Conrad’s famous novel “Heart of Darkness” became an object of intense discussions. After famous Chinua Achebe’s article An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad‘s Heart of Darkness published in 1977 where he accuses J. Conrad of being “bloody racist”, scholars remain divided. Some of them agree with Ch. Achebe and continues with criticism on racism, feminism, imperialism and other issues. However other group defends J. Conrad and claims he was anti-imperialist and revealed cruel ruling of imperialists of the Victorian times. The debate continues for almost forty years without any clear answer. But there is one obvious conclusion – political ideas in the novel is the most important thing. That is why in this thesis political science interpretation is offered. History of ideas humanitarian school used in this work was created by A. O. Lovejoy and later on it was developed by many scholars. Q. Skinner criticism of A. O. Lovejoy approach is especially significant in this work since it provided groundwork for synchronic micro-study which is used to analyze “Heart of Darkness”. Q. Skinner offers research strategy which involves both text and context. It is really important for novel analysis since it takes into account specific time period of imperialism and J. Conrad’s biography. Political science point of view can provide new perspective of this topic since history of ideas usually focus on political or philosophical texts. But as it is interdisciplinary approach its specific aspects can provide entertaining results. Josephs Conrad’s “Heart of darkness” analysis is divided by three aspects – biography, discourse and text itself. This combination helps to understand the intention of the author, which is really important for history of ideas. Understanding original intentions of the novel allows to accept or reject accusations made by most famous critic Ch. Achebe who is often criticized for interpreting only text and not taking specific historical context into account. Ch. Achebe raises another important question whether novel which uses racist language can be considered as literary canon. Text like this cannot be read in schools since it creates a backward image of Africa. “Heart of darkness” analysis which involves context allows to decide whether racism is a product of its own time period or specific intention of the author. If it comes from the discourse of the time, another important question can be raised – should we remove all books written in controversial times despite its literary value since appropriate discourse has changed

This article examines the classic dilemma of direct effect of EC law. The author contends that there is no need for separation of concepts of direct effect and application of EC law. However, the author analyses the main legal and theoretical trends, current case-law of ECJ concerning the subject and makes the conclusion that still there is some rationale for making of at least theoretical distinction between the mentioned terms. The present publication also encapsulates the research on the conditions of direct effect of EC law and their application in national practice. The author makes a research of each condition by analysing the pragmatic possibilities of its implementation. Moreover, the author examines the peculiarities of introduction of the doctrine into Lithuanian case-law. It is contended that, though these conditions are well understood, there is still a problem with their practical implementation. This is revealed by illustration of quite poor Lithuanian case-law where use of direct effect might be come across. National judges are still reluctant to implement the condition of direct effect, since in many cases where EC law might have been used to support the argumentation of the court and to motivate the decision, only some aspects of EC legislation are usually being touched by the Lithuanian practitioners. This shows the very fresh attitude towards EC direct effect doctrine while in older Member-States this concept have already survived many others as well as became an inseparable tool for daily law practice.Šiame straipsnyje analizuojama viena iš pagrindinių dilemų, su kuria susiduriama siekiant suformuoti veiksmingą Europos Sąjungos (toliau – ES) teisės tiesioginio veikimo doktrinos praktiką nacionalinėje teisėje. Be to, šioje publikacijoje analizuojamos ES teisės tiesioginio veikimo ir taikymo sąlygos bei jų įgyvendinimo pradžia Lietuvos teismų praktikoje

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Baudžiamoji atsakomybė; Baudžiamoji teisė; Juridinių asmenų baudžiamoji atsakomybė; Juridinių asmenų baudžiamoji atsakomybė Lietuvoje ir užsienyje; Criminal Law, Criminal liability, criminal liability of legal persons in Lithuania and abroad; Criminal liability of legal personsIn the present article the author scrutinizes the statements provided in Article 20 of the Criminal Code of the Lithuania, which are directly related to the regulation of corporate criminal liability in Lithuania. The mentioned statements of the Lithuanian law are being analyzed in the context of the main models on criminal responsibility of legal entities. The author of the present publication contends that all of the main concepts might find their own place in the practice of implementation of the mentioned form of corporate liability as well as law in Lithuania. Moreover, referring to the practice of the foreign jurisdictions, the author states that most provisions of Lithuanian law might be interpreted in the same way as it is being done in other states. This would ensure the avoidance of the mistakes, which mostly used to be done by the foreign colleagues as well as guarantee the justifiable legal practice in the mentioned country
