    The ımportance of morphological knowledge in the reading comprehension difficulties in a highly agglutinative language: Evidence from poor comprehenders

    This study examined the importance of morphological knowledge in the reading comprehension difficulties of poor comprehenders reading in a highly agglutinative language, Turkish. Participants were 56 students recruited from the second and third grades. In the assessment process, we applied three experimental paradigms addressing the participants' morphological and morpho-syntactical knowledge at the lexical and the supralexical levels. Data were collected in individual sessions and analyzed by running a series of GLM ANOVAs and calculating the Spearman–Brown correlation coefficient. Findings suggest morphological knowledge is an important indicator of reading comprehension difficulties in Turkish, a highly agglutinative language. The acquisition of adequate reading comprehension seems to be modified by particularities of the morphological knowledge. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature

    The recent earthquakes in Turkey have shown the poor seismic performance of reinforced concrete. This led to widespread utilization of several strengthening methods, each of which is convenient in different aspects. However, what is required to apply any of these methods is to evacuate the building in question since the interruptions are mostly within the building and to the structural members. This study proposes a method for external strengthening of typical five storey reinforced concrete buildings that represent the majority of the built environment in Turkey. The method suggests addition of shear walls, which are connected to each other by means of diaphragms on two floor levels, to the existing external columns at four corners of the building. The positive effect of shear walls in seismic performance is already known; however; basically, the aim of this study is to discuss the feasibility of the proposed method in terms of architectural viewpoint since the method unavoidably covers great modifications on the architectural form of the building. Hence, the research mostly explores whether it is possible to give the reinforced concrete residential buildings, which constitute the majority of the built environment especially after 1950s due to the unhealthy urbanization period in Turkey, a common characteristic appearance by means of external structural members.     Air Quality in the Built Environment: Investigating Pollutant Exposure, Ventilation and Artificial Intelligence Methods

    This dissertation investigates the impact of various ventilation strategies on indoor air quality (IAQ) in unique building typologies that are underrepresented in the literature. The first study examined a naturally ventilated cross-training gym, finding that natural ventilation was insufficient. CO2 and particulate matter levels frequently exceeded NIOSH standards, particularly on colder days when ventilation was reduced. The study concluded that tailored ventilation methods are necessary to maintain optimal IAQ in such facilities. In the second study, IAQ data from the cross-training facility was used to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool designed to predict optimal occupancy intervals for maintaining IAQ. Specifically, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network model was developed to predict these intervals, demonstrating the potential to enhance occupant health and safety by identifying safe time slots. The model effectively designated times with lower pollutant levels, proving superior to human decision-making. This approach underscores the potential of predictive analytics in managing IAQ in indoor environments. The third study evaluated the use of a heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system in a tiny house. The results revealed the HRV's effectiveness in reducing particulate matter and volatile organic compounds compared to natural ventilation, despite variations in effectiveness depending on the pollutant and activity. The study highlighted the importance of mechanical ventilation strategies in managing IAQ in compact dwellings. Collectively, these findings provide comprehensive insights into the effectiveness of different ventilation methods and tools, emphasizing the need for customized strategies to ensure healthier indoor environments across various unique and under-researched building typologies.Architectur

    Impact of Façade Characteristics on Energy and Daylighting Performance of Medium Office Buildings in Hot Humid Climates

Based on the results of this analysis, the optimum variable modification set which demonstrated the most optimum results for the energy and daylighting performance of the building was further selected. The research used simulation approach. The baseline building was a hypothetical new-constructed rectangular medium office building with an aspect ratio of 1.5 and located in Houston, TX, the representative climate for climate zone 2A (hot humid). Independent variables and their tested options analyzed in this study include: building orientation (facades with higher area facing North and South, facades with higher area facing East and West, facades with higher area facing North-West and South-East, and facades with higher area facing North-East and South-West), window to wall ratio (WWR) (20% (Baseline), 35%, 50%, 65%, 80%), glazing types (Double-pane Clear, Double-pane Low-E, and Triple-pane Low-E), and shading devices (horizontal overhangs (Type1-3’ depth/6’11” height/ 2.8’ side projection width), and vertical fins, (2’ depth/5.2’ height/2’ distance), and Type-2-3’ depth/6’11” height/ 2.8’ side projection width), and vertical fins. (3’ depth/5.2’ height/3’ distance). The dependent variables were energy use intensity (EUI), spatial daylight autonomy (sDA), and annual sunlight exposure (ASE). The results demonstrated that option set with facades with higher area facing North and South, 35% WWR, triple-pane low-E glazing type, and with shading device type 2 resulted in 10% lower EUI value, 42% higher sDA percentage, and 31% lower ASE percentage compared to the baseline.Architectur
