Tapping Economies of Scale and Scope in Consumer Cooperation - A Case Analysis of Possible Cooperation among selected Cooperatives
Because of its narrow and negative perspective of safeguarding the interests of only poor consumers against unethical practices of the private traders, consumer cooperation in India seems to have failed, except probably in some isolated pockets. A number of social welfare functions like poverty alleviation and public distribution of essential items of consumption have been imposed on them at the cost of their basic economics. With the basic micro and macro-economic rationale for consumer cooperatives as a positive form of economic organization being lost sight of, they seem to be facing enormous problems both historically as well as currently in a era of economic liberalization. Their worries seem to have been compounded with the threat of impending competition from large private enterpriss - both domestic and foreign, which highlights the need for evolving strategies to rectivy their systemic weaknesses and tackling the competition head on. This case has attempted to document just such an initiative through a round table conference with several doyens of the consumer cooperative movement in India such as Warana Bazar and Amalsad Mandali as well as some fledging consumer cooperatives from West Bengal which are already in existence for some time or contemplating entry into this field. The roundtable conference organized in the spirit of Cooperation among Cooperatives attempted to evolve strategies to capture economies of scale and scope in order to take on the competition, as well as to facilitate dissemination of ideas and information across the country.
Discrimination of Samar and Talh honey produced in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region using multivariate data analysis
Lately, ensuring clear discrimination of the authenticity of natural honey is a concern not only to consumers but also to producers, traders and industries. The intrinsically simple nature of the honey composition, the distinguished health benefits as well as the high price make adulteration and falsification of the honey very common and the detection of authenticity very difficult. Samar honey (n = 59) and Talh honey (n = 64) produced from two species of Acacia trees (Acacia tortilis and Acacia gerrardii Benth, respectively) in different countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Yemen, has been studied by applying Multivariate Data Analysis. The discrimination is based on the official chemical quality parameters that inform about the nectary sources, including glucose, fructose, sucrose content, total reducing sugar, moisture content, acidity and diastase activity. Results show that the total reducing sugar, glucose and fructose were the most important positive loading descriptors that influence the quality of Samar and Talh honey. In addition, most of the Talh honey samples clustered at the top of the hierarchy, while Samar honey samples clustered at the bottom. The Multivariate Data Analysis indicates that the acidity and diastase activity are the most effective characteristics influencing the floral and geographical discrimination of both types of honey. This is the first study in the GCC area to discriminate between Samar and Talh honey using Multivariate Data Analysis by applying the principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. The Multivariate Data Analysis can be a helpful method to differentiate between Talh and Samar honey

This study was conducted to Correlates with the Performance of Athletes in the Eastern Samar State University, Guiuan, Specifically, this study answered the following:1. What is the level of competency of the faculty-coaches in terms of:2.1 Professional preparation2.2 Coaching skill 2.3 Technical skill? 2. What is the level of performance of athletes in the sports competition? 3. Is there a significant relationship between : 3.1. level of competency of faculty-coaches, and level of performance of athletes? This study employed descriptive-correlation which involved 30 faculty-coaches in the Eastern Samar Samar State University- Guiuan. Data were retrieved using a survey questionnaire. These were tallied and analyzed using appropriate statistical tools such as percentage, mean, Pearson product-moment correlation.Findings of the study revealed the following information: The competency of the faculty-coaches in terms of professional preparation, coaching skill, and technical skill of the faculty-coaches were all significantly associated to the performance of athletes. Hence, it was deduced that faculty-coaches who rated themselves higher in these criteria can motivate and train better athletes. Based on the findings of this study, the following conclusions are drawn:The faculty-coaches were regarded competent since they were professionally prepared for sports, with very good coaching skill and technically capable to handle their respective event or game. From the findings of the study, the following recommendations are offered:An organized sports training program should be implemented in the school or division so that all faculty-coaches will be given the chances to be trained especially the new ones.Further studies maybe conducted to validate the findings of this study.

Primary Caregivers' Knowledge, Attitudes and Beliefs toward Palliative Care for Children with Cancer
Parents’ knowledge, attitudes and beliefs (KAB) toward Pediatric Palliative Care (PPC)
in children with cancer remain underexplored, especially in Low and Middle Income
Countries (LMICs) where the care relies heavily on family involvement. This two-phase
multicenter study examined primary caregivers’ KAB toward PPC for children with
cancer in order to uncover areas for improvement. The first and second phases share a
common specific aim to culturally validate instruments measuring the concepts of
interest. The specific aims of the second phase included describing the current primary
caregivers’ KAB toward PPC for children with cancer, determining the factors
associated with primary caregivers’ KAB and identifying the primary caregivers’ tasks
in PPC for children with cancer.
In the first study phase, cultural adaptation, content validation and pilot testing of the
questionnaire were conducted. The items were newly developed or taken from
previously validated tools such as the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale and the
Palliative Care Knowledge Scale. After two independent forward translations and one
back-translation, ten experts in pediatric oncology and palliative care evaluated the
questionnaire for content validity and cultural appropriateness. The questionnaire was
then piloted through structured interviews via WhatsApp with twenty primary caregivers
of children with cancer. The main study used a quantitative cross-sectional descriptive
design. A sample of 105 participants from three major pediatric oncology centers in
Lebanon completed the study. Data were collected through structured interviews via
WhatsApp using the questionnaire validated in the pilot phase.
The experts’ reviews revealed excellent Content Validity Index (CVI) for the items
(CVI=0.8-1) and the overall survey (CVI=0.99). The sample in the pilot study evaluated
the survey’s ease, length, clarity, wording and language. Preliminary data was obtained.
In the main study, the psychometric analysis of different survey sections yielded
satisfactory results for the PPC attitudes scale (Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed a
three-factor structure with satisfactory Cronbach’s alpha coefficient). Results of the
main study results suggested that, few primary caregivers have heard about PPC (n=18,
17.1%) and only 2% had accurate information about it. When given a brief description
of PPC, more than 90% demonstrated positive attitudes (Mean attitude above 4) toward
the care and recommended its integration at the start of cancer treatment. “Religious and
spiritual commitment” was the most common strong facilitator and “Overwhelming
negative emotions” was the most common strong barrier to integrating PPC at the
individual level. Participants, on average, engaged in 22.1 activities within PPC, even
without recognizing the medical term. The bivariate and regression analysis suggested
significant associations of knowledge, attitudes and beliefs with several demographic
and clinical factors.
Examining parents’ KAB toward PPC in LMICs, such as Lebanon, enhances
knowledge and potentially informs practice in these regions. This study promoted PPC
understanding, highlighted factors influencing KAB toward PPC, and provided
evidence on psychometric properties of novel instruments used among parents of
children with cancer
SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE FISHERY OF LAOANG, NORTHERN SAMAR, PHILIPPINES
Between September 2015 and August 2017 the author lived and worked in Laoang, a municipality in the province of Northern Samar in the Philippines. The author worked as a Coastal Resource Management Volunteer with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office. This report discusses current and potential management strategies concerning the fishery of Laoang, particularly concerning the Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) placed at the edge of the municipal waters. Information was compiled during the development of two 10-hectare Marine Protected Areas and a Fish Catch Monitoring program. Various strategies for both the FAD and coastal areas of the fishery are discussed, including enhanced environmental education and protection, limiting adding FADs to the municipal waters, and promoting tourism. While many of the programs discussed already exist in Laoang, these programs can potentially be expanded on to enhance the sustainability of the fishery to promote food security and income
