Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Two types of electronic states in one-dimensional crystals of finite length

    No full text
Exact and general results on the electronic states in one-dimensional crystals bounded at tau and tau + L, where L = Na, N is a positive integer, and a is the potential period, are presented. Corresponding to each energy band of the Bloch wave, there are N - 1 states in the finite crystal whose energies are dependent on L but not on tau and map the energy band exactly. There is always one and only one electronic state corresponding to each band gap of the Bloch wave, whose energy is dependent on r but not on L. This state is either a constant-energy confined band-edge state or a surface state in the band gap. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).Physics, MultidisciplinarySCI(E)0ARTICLE122-3030

Bioleaching of marmatite flotation concentrate with a moderately thermoacidophilic iron-oxidizing bacterial strain

    No full text
Bioleaching of a marmatite flotation concentrate with a moderately thermoacidophilic iron-oxidizing bacterial strain (MLY) was investigated in batch experiments. Experimental results showed that the dissolution rate of marmatite was influenced markedly by pH, temperature, pulp density and particle size of ore. The bioleaching of the concentrate by the moderate thermophile was more effective when carried out under the higher acidity and temperature compared with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. The adapted strain of the moderate thermophile could provide more rapid and complete oxidation of marmatite than its original strain and in the sterile control. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. "Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"

    No full text
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

A novel soluble brain-specific protein (Sy-1):identification and partial characterization

    No full text
A novel brain-specific antigen, called Sy-1, has been identified in whole rat brain hypotonic extracts by means of an antiserum produced in rabbits against the synaptosomal cytosol. Sy-1 is an acidic protein (pI 4.7) present exclusively in a soluble form and it does not carry any sugar moiety. Sy-1 is found only in rat brain and, in a partially identical form, in mouse brain. In rat brain the antigen is more concentrated in the brainstem than in the forebrain and cerebellum. On the basis of immunological, physico-chemical and biological criteria Sy-1 differs from other, already described, brain-specific proteins

Larva rearing of the flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, was conducted in order to evaluate the food value of the rotifer, Brachionus Nicatilis, enriched with a blue-green alga, Synechocystis sp. SY-4. The dietary value of rotifers enriched with SY-4 (S-R), SY-4 and Euglena gracilis enriched with DHA (SE-R) or SY-4 and Nannochtorolsis ocutata (SN-R) was compared with that of rotifers enriched with Euglena gracilis (E-R) or Nannochloropsis oculata (N-R) by feeding these rotifers to larval flounder for 25 days. The rotifers enriched with these microalgae after culture with Tetraselmis tetrathele was given to the larvae. The growth of larvae fed SE-R was better than others (SE-R 10.8 mm.vs. S-R 9.2 mm, SN-R 10.0 mm, E-R 8.5 mm and N-R 9.8 mm in average T.L.), although the survival rate of the larvae fed E-R was better than others (E-R 94.9 % vs. S-R 88.8 %, SE-R 92.0 %, SN-R 94.4 % and.N-R 94.7 %). Perhaps the content of ω3 HUFA in S-R was not enough for larval flounder. However, the dietary value was effectively improved due to incorporation of ω3 HUFA by thecombination culture with Euglena gracilisdepartmental bulletin pape
