Erosion de la nature, stratification de l'humain. Tournant ontologique et écologie sémiotique

    No full text
The article “Érosion de la nature, stratification de l’humain: Tournant ontologique et écologie sémiotique” by Pierluigi Basso Fossali explores the interplay between ecological thought and semiotics, emphasizing the ontological challenges posed by the relationship between nature and culture. The author critiques the oversimplification of nature as a static regulatory principle, advocating instead for a dynamic semiotic ecology that acknowledges the interdependence of cultures, environments, and symbolic systems. The text highlights the necessity of rethinking environmental discourse through a multi-layered perspective that transcends traditional dichotomies, such as nature versus culture, while embracing the epistemological contributions of diverse civilizations. By integrating the notions of resistance, translation, and intersubjectivity, the article argues for a pluralistic understanding of ecological frameworks as both cultural constructs and practical paradigms for addressing global environmental challenges

Playing with autism. Encountering Simona Concaro by her music. Vol. 1.1

    No full text
Playing with Autism contains twenty-four original pieces for piano, recorded and carefully transcribed in current music notation by Pierluigi Politi and Hanna Shybayeva. Simona Concaro, the author, is a young woman suffering of low-functioning autism. She lives in Cascina Rossago, a farm-community, designed to meet the needs of people with autism, in Oltrepo pavese (Italy). Since she was three, Simona Concaro has created original compositions on piano, instrument she learned by herself, refusing any kind of musical education. In everyday life, Simona does not use verbal language and has low autonomy. Her music, on the contrary, contains interesting features – melodic, rhythmic and harmonic –, even in the presence of some iterative elements, typical of the autistic spectrum

The Italian trial of endovascular AAA exclusion using the Parodi endograft

    No full text
PURPOSE: To report the outcome of the prospective 11-center Italian Parodi Trial using straight and tapered endografts for the endovascular exclusion of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). METHODS: From April 1994 to July 1995, 27 patients were evaluated and selected for endovascular AAA exclusion. The Parodi devices were delivered through femoral arteriotomies using 18 to 22F introducers and deployed by balloon expansion of the terminal stents. RESULTS: Of 27 cases attempted, 24 endografts (15 tube, 9 aortomonoiliac) were implanted (1 deployment and 2 access failures [11.1%] were converted). Three endoleaks (12.5%) were treated intraoperatively with covered stents, two successfully, and the third sealed within 30 days. Three (12.5%) of the 24 treated patients died in-hospital of device-(n = 2) and procedure-related (n = 1) causes; the remaining 21 patients were discharged within 8 days. Of the 8 aortomonoiliac grafts in follow-up, only 1 (12.5%) failed in the mean 23-month (range 18 to 30) follow-up: however, 4 (31%) of 13 tube graft patients were converted to surgery within 18 months. Of the 16 (66.7%) surviving endografts at 2 years, 6 (38%) showed no change in the AAA diameter, while 10 (62%) had shrunk. CONCLUSIONS: The tube graft was applicable in only about 5% of cases, and accurate endograft sizing and distal fixation were problematic. The aortomonoiliac design was not appealing to surgeons but fared better in the long term. Given the advent of newer endograft models, the Italian Parodi Trial has been terminated

Gli strumenti della scrittura: un confronto metapoetico tra Valerio Magrelli e Pierluigi Cappello

    No full text
This article compares the metapoetic works on the act of writing by Valerio Magrelli (Roma, 1975) and by Pierluigi Cappello (Gemona del Friuli, 1967 – Cassacco, 2017). After studying and sampling the metapoetic vocabulary of each author, I selected specific terms that occurred in both authors’ poems about the act of writing by hand: paper, rubber, pencil, page, and notebook. Therefore, this corpus consists of poems that include at least one of these nouns. The metric and rhetorical analysis of these poems allowed me not only to identify specific features for each author, but also to observe some analogies, such as the creation of a world existing “inside the poem” – a world that shelters and at the same time imprisons the “poetic I” of the authors.

Scientists, Democracy and Society. A Community of Inquirers

    No full text
This monograph examines the relationship between science and democracy. The author argues that there is no clear-cut division between science and the rest of society. Rather, scientists and laypeople form a single community of inquiry, which aims at the truth. To defend his theory, the author shows that science and society are both heterogeneous and fragmented. They display variable and shifting alliances between components. He also explains how information flow between science and society is bi-directional through “transactional” processes. In other words, science and society mutually define themselves. The author also explains how science is both objective and laden with values. Coverage includes a wide range of topics, such as: the ideal of value-free science, the is/ought divide, “thick terms” and the language of science, inductive risk, the dichotomy between pure science and applied science, constructivism and the philosophy of risk. It also looks at the concepts of truth and objectivity, the autonomy of science, moral and social inquiry, perfectionism and democracy, and the role of experts in democratic societies. The style is philosophical, but the book features many examples and case-studies. It will appeal to philosophers of science, those in science and technology studies as well as interested general readers

Le Faussaire et la Ville : la correspondance entre Sénèque et l’apôtre Paul mise à l’épreuve de l’archéologie

    No full text
In this article the author provides new external evidence demonstrating that the correspondence between the philosopher Seneca and the apostle Paul is a forgery. The author compares archaeological data offered by inscriptions, graffiti and regionarii with information conveyed by the apocryphal letters. The setting of the epistles, as well as information about the duration and damages of the Neronian fire, contrast with the archaeological data, indicating that the text should be considered a forgery. The contribution shows that the forger worked rather in a literary mode. Conversely, the only archaeological date (CIL XIV 566) that scholars have brought to support authenticity is probably not a Christian inscription and does not prove anything regarding a meeting between Seneca and Paul or Seneca’s conversion. The origin of the correspondence should instead be traced to the cult of the apostles Paul and Peter during the 3rd and 4th centuries
