Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

A review on climate change adaptation policies for the transportation sector

    Get PDF
Climate change related disasters and extreme weather events are expected to significantly increase the risk of damages on networks, systems and assets. In view of these anticipated adverse effects, growing attention is placed on adaptation measures, in the form of preventive actions aiming to minimize induced hazards’ negative impacts and to enhance the cross-sectorial resilience. The transportation sector is no stranger to this regime. Within this paper, a detailed desktop, literature and case-study review approach is adopted in order to identify transport-related adaptation measures and actions that are taken at a global and European level. Findings from national and international activities, along with relevant policies and strategies stemming from relevant organizations (IPCC, Bridging the Gap, etc.) are reviewed in terms of their hitherto and expected contribution in efficiently addressing climate change. In addition, proposed actions are clustered in terms of content (technical measures, ICT, legislative, etc.). In this way, the transferability and applicability of case-specific experiences throughout the world are highlighted through the consolidation of a common knowledge base regarding adaptation measures in the transportation sector. Findings are formulated in the form of an adaptation toolbox that can provide the basis for an improved decision making approach for different end-user for addressing climate change

Business Insights of Innovative Logistics Services – discussing Models, Strategy and Markets

    No full text
Within this paper, we present and discuss the viability of potential business model for innovative logistics services, as developed within the EC funded AEOLIX project. To overcome the fragmentation and lack of connectivity of ICT-based information systems for logistics decision making, AEOLIX aims to establish a cloud-based collaborative logistics ecosystem for configuring and managing (logistics-related) information pipelines. Its overarching business model, that of a platform, as opposed to the conventional linear flow pipe models, is presented herein, along with the ways it will create value by facilitating exchanges between two or more users and thus allows users to both produce and consume values. The basic structure of the AEOLIX business model is presented, with its users, value unit, filter and core interaction dimensions explicitly described. The paper also positions its efforts in regard to similar endeavours and discusses the pros and cons of an exchange or a platform business model for logistics services before mapping out potential users and innovative approaches to engage them. The paper concludes with insights on the business success factors of logistics platforms and their monetization and economics potential in the short future

The "Not Another SDG 3 Booklet" booklet provides a comprehensive overview of SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being, addressing the interconnected factors influencing health outcomes. It emphasizes the need for a shift from addressing symptoms to addressing root causes of poor health, focusing on equity, accessibility, and environmental and climate justice. The booklet highlights the critical interlinkages with other SDG targets and key issues affecting communities, such as inadequate access to healthcare, health disparities, environmental degradation, and mental health stigma. In terms of monitoring, the UN and the EU propose comprehensive approaches to track progress in global health development, emphasizing interconnected health issues and customized monitoring at the local level. The booklet also discusses EU policy initiatives, barriers, and challenges to achieving SDG 3, including inequity, weak health systems, disease outbreaks, antimicrobial resistance, and climate change. It outlines actions taken by local governments and communities to support universal health coverage, promote health education and literacy, increase access to essential medicines and vaccines, support research and innovation, and collaborate for better health outcomes. The booklet addresses the current status of SDG 3, indicating both progress and challenges in achieving the goal, such as decreasing unmet medical care needs and fatal accidents, while life expectancy and healthy life expectancy stagnate. It also provides a good practice example of Universal Health Coverage in Finland, highlighting the success of the Finnish healthcare system in delivering comprehensive and equitable healthcare services to all residents. The booklet is a valuable resource for understanding the complexities of achieving SDG 3 and the efforts required to promote good health and well-being worldwide.JRC.B.3 - Territorial Developmen

This report illustrates the methodological approach and the data analysis for developing a regional monitoring indicator set for the SDGs within the framework of the Regions2030 pilot project for the Piemonte region. From the analyses of the indicators proposed by the JRC – Joint Research Centre of the European Commission concerning the SDG Targets, the Piemonte Region selected a set of additional indicators in coherence with the national monitoring system and the strategic priorities of the Regional Sustainable Development Strategy. These indicators were chosen about Piemonte's socio-economic and environmental features, which can help monitor Piemonte's potential. However, its critical issues can also be of support in targeting regional policies and actions. This work is not isolated but constitutes a vital stepstone not only concerning the pilot study but also towards the setting up of the regional monitoring system, which will be implemented and consolidated over time, with the support of the Centre for the Sustainable Development of Piemonte - observe, connect, share and orient.JRC.B.3 - Territorial Developmen

The research work contributes to establishing a relevant and applicable set of indicators for monitoring the achievement of the SDGs at the regional level. The analysis was developed within the “REGIONS2030: project, launched by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in collaboration with DG REGIO and ESTAT, and supported by the European Parliament. The principal finding of the review is the identification of 47 indicators for which statistical data are readily available for Nord-Vest. This core group of indicators provides insight into the progress made by the region towards achieving 13 SDGs. Complementarily, a group of 28 additional proxy indicators are proposed for the region, which provides further details on the performance of Nord-Vest. Last, 18 indicators falling under 11 SDGs have been identified with readily available NUTS0-level data that could also be reported at the NUTS2 level. The main challenges faced during data collection include scarcity of readily available NUTS2-level data, inconsistencies in data availability and low levels of harmonisation across available data sources. Possible steps to address the existing challenges and gaps include • ensuring that all data are expressed in standardised form across NUTS2-level jurisdictions, • aligning the periods for which statistics are published with the multiannual planning cycles, and • ensuring that administrative data are communicated annually to conduct trend analysis.JRC.B.3 - Territorial Developmen
