    This book presents the outcomes of the symposium “NEW METROPOLITAN PERSPECTIVES,” held at Mediterranea University, Reggio Calabria, Italy on May 26–28, 2020. Addressing the challenge of Knowledge Dynamics and Innovation-driven Policies Towards Urban and Regional Transition, the book presents a multi-disciplinary debate on the new frontiers of strategic and spatial planning, economic programs and decision support tools in connection with urban–rural area networks and metropolitan centers.     Planet signatures and effect of the chemical evolution of the Galactic thin-disk stars

    Context. Studies based on high-precision abundance determinations revealed that chemical patterns of solar twins are characterised by the correlation between the differential abundances relative to the Sun and the condensation temperatures (T-c) of the elements. It has been suggested that the origin of this relation is related to the chemical evolution of the Galactic disk, but other processes, associated with the presence of planets around stars, might also be involved.Aims. We analyse HIRES spectra of 14 solar twins and the Sun to provide new insights on the mechanisms that can determine the relation between [X/H] and T-c.Methods. Our spectroscopic analysis produced stellar parameters (T-eff, log g, [Fe/H], and xi), ages, masses, and abundances of 22 elements (C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Y, and Ba). We used these determinations to place new constraints on the chemical evolution of the Galactic disk and to verify whether this process alone can explain the different [X/H]-T-c slopes observed so far.Results. We confirm that the [X/Fe] ratios of all the species correlate with age. The slopes of these relations allow us to describe the effect that the chemical evolution of the Galactic disk has on the chemical patterns of the solar twins. After subtracting the chemical evolution effect, we find that the unevolved [X/H]-T-c slope values do not depend on the stellar ages anymore. However, the wide diversity among these [X/H]-T-c slopes, covering a range of +/- 4 x 10(-5) dex K-1, indicates that processes in addition to the chemical evolution may affect the [X/H]-T-c slopes.Conclusions. The wide range of unevolved [X/H]-T-c slope values spanned at all ages by our sample could reflect the wide diversity among exo-planetary systems observed so far and the variety of fates that the matter in circumstellar disks can experience

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     The chemical signatures of planetary engulfment events in binary systems

    Planetary engulfment events involve the chemical assimilation of a planet into a star’s external layer. This can cause a change in the chemical pattern of the stellar atmosphere in a way that mirrors the composition of the rocky object engulfed, with the refractory elements being more abundant than the volatiles. Due to these stellar chemical changes, planetary engulfment events can render the process of chemical tagging potentially inaccurate. A line-byline differential analysis of twin stars in wide binary systems allows us to test the chemical homogeneity of these associations with typical individual stellar Fe I uncertainties of 0.01 dex and eventually unveil chemical anomalies that could be attributed to planetary engulfment events. Out of the 14 systems analyzed here, we report the discovery of the most chemically inhomogeneous system to date (HIP 34407/HIP 34426). The median difference in abundances of refractory elements within the pair is 0.19 dex and the trend between the differential abundances and condensation temperature suggests that the anomaly is likely due to a planetary engulfment event.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     The Influence of Potential Flood Hazard Areas for Urban Adaptation to Climate Change

    In the modern context of climatic uncertainty, the management of the resilient transformation process of the city emerges as a priority challenge for urban planning to develop a multidisciplinary and inter-scalar approach, transferring knowledge between sectors and encouraging the whole system thinking. In detail, the present work investigates the interferences between the potential flood hazard areas and the emergency planning of the municipality of Potenza. Critical nodes have been identified in the infrastructure network as essential features for coordinating rescue interventions to protect the population in a disaster. Indeed, the plan must be flexible in all emergencies, including unexpected ones. Therefore, a new perspective of risk management aims to reduce sources of risk and strengthen the ability to reduce the variability of performance, and complement the risk analysis with frameworks and practices that support system-wide resilience
