Limits to the attentional boost effect: the moderating influence of orthographic distinctiveness
The Attentional Boost Effect (ABE) refers to the counter-intuitive finding that the detection of infrequent targets in a divided-attention (DA) condition enhances memory of images co-occurring with targets (as compared with images co-occurring with distractors; Swallow & Jiang Cognition, 115, 118-132, 2010). Previous studies have shown that the ABE also applies to verbal materials (words; Spataro, Mulligan, & Rossi-Arnaud Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 39, 1223-1231 , 2013) and documented an important moderating factor, word frequency-the ABE was robust for high-frequency words, but small or non-significant for low-frequency words (Mulligan, Spataro, & Picklesimer Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 40, 1049-1063, 2014). The present experiment tested the predictions of the early-phase-elevated-attention hypothesis of the ABE by manipulating the orthographic distinctiveness of the to-be-remembered words. Results revealed that the ABE was significant for low-frequency words with common orthographic features, but not for low-frequency words with rare orthographic features. As a consequence, the orthographic distinctiveness effect (ODE) was eliminated in the DA condition. These findings are in line with the proposal that the ABE-related attentional enhancement occurs during an early phase of stimulus perception and comprehension, as well as with the proposal that the ODE is mediated by high-level, attention demanding comparative processe
A Complete Characterization of “Optimum Accumulation” under Interest Rate Risk and Finite Horizon
In this paper we characterise the properties of the longitudinal path of consumption and wealth of an individual endowed with constant-relative-risk-aversion preferences and facing finite lifetime and lognormally distributed random returns on savings. In particular, we ana-lyse the role of the deep parameters of the model - i.e. degree of prudence, riskiness and the expected rate of return of capital- in shaping the characteristics of both the level and the rate of growth of consumption and wealth
Ante litteram “cooperative thinking”: Ramsey, Harrod and Keynes about the Life Cycle Hypothesis and economic growth
In this paper we reconstruct the early insights that Frank Ramsey and Roy Harrod provided into the Life Cycle Hypothesis (LCH) in their 1928 and 1948 contributions, respectively, well before the publication of the 1954 Modigliani-Brumberg (M-B) formalized framework. In 1970 Modigliani acknowledged Harrod’s forerunning contribution to the LCH, that was included in the Lecture Two of his 1948 volume Towards a Dynamic Economics. Yet, he never mentioned Ramsey’s insight on the LCH, presented in the pathbreaking article “A mathematical theory of saving” published in The Economic Journal in 1928. A fact that is at odds with the large credit that the two English economists, who were both mentored by John M. Keynes, had in the academic community since 1950s. Adding oddity to oddity, although largely drawing from Ramsey’s analytical framework, in his book Harrod himself cites Ramsey’s work only in a footnote on a secondary issue. We offer in this work a reconstruction of these facts, ending with the analysis of the interplay between Harrod and Keynes in the elaboration of Harrod’s Fundamental Equation on economic growth, which also emerges in M-B’s LCH model
Using ICTs to improve perceptions skills in EFL listening
Fil: Spataro, Claudia. Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Facultad de Lenguas; Argentina. This work aims at showing how 5 listening sessions were designed on Moodle 2.3 based on the review of possible activities that aid perception skills and the way in which multimedia and Moodle have been used to design online listening activities. This small scale action research was carried out with intermediate-level EFL students and its findings have shown that it is possible to design successful self-access perception activities with different ICT tools.http://www.faapi.org.ar/downloads/FAAPI2015.pdfFil: Spataro, Claudia.
