A Wireless and Context-Aware ECG Monitor: An iMote2 Based Portable System
With the advent of low cost sensors and high performance mobile devices, telemedicine is well on its way to becoming part of our daily lives. While many times we see systems add a singular piece of context to ECG holter data, we believe that additional information can aid in understanding a patients condition, not only by physicians but by computerized algorithms as well. Typically, context of any sort is fundamental for having a holistic view of the user/patient’s complete situation. In that light we have developed a portable monitoring system based around a custom ECG board, an iMote2 (a platform from Intel Research) and a cellular telephone capable of transmitting information over UMTS. The iMote2 has the task of contextualizing the ECG data by adding not only accelerometer data, but ambient information as well. The integration of a subject’s activity from accelerometers and environmental data like temperature, humidity, and light intensity will give a better general picture of where the changes in ECG data come from. The system visualizes the information on a portable windows mobile handheld with the possibility of transmitting the information to a remote server for later use or re-use. The overall result is a system which provides a clean ECG signal implementing an ac-coupled front end with the potential to allow complex classifiers to run on the iMote2 platform
The xenophorids of the Pliocene Basin of Siena (Gastropoda, Caenogastropoda, Xenophoridae)
The systematics of fossil Eura-Mediterranean xenophorids is still relatively unknown, due to the many problems involved in studying them (very conservative shell structure, few available shell characters, the fact that the attached objects modify whorl shape and vary in amount, the rarity of certain species and the difficulty of finding well preserved specimens). Most of the relevant literature dates back to the classic monographs on Tertiary molluscs by M. Hörnes, F. Sacco and M. Cossmann. Seven species have been reported from the Euro-Mediterranean Pliocene: Xenophora crispa (König, 1825), X. deshayesi (Michelotti, 1847), X. infundibulum (Brocchi, 1814), X. plioitalica Sacco, 1896, X. scaldensis Glibert, 1958, Stellaria plioextensa (Sacco, 1896), and S. testigera (Bronn, 1831). However, all but three (X. crispa, X. infundibulum, and S. testigera) are practically unknown. This paper is devoted to six species found in the Siena Pliocene Basin, a classic Italian Pliocene area. Five of them (X. crispa, X. infundibulum, X. plioitalica, S. plioextensa, and S. testigera) are redescribed and current knowledge about them summarized; the sixth species, known from a dozen specimens, is described as new: X. davolii n. sp. In the remarks to the new species, the status and the relationships of some classical Euro-Mediterranean Tertiary xenophorid species, i.e. X. deshayesi (Michelotti, 1847), X. burdigalensis (Grateloup, 1847) and X. grateloupi (D'Orbigny, 1852), are discussed. A neotype is designated for two species (X. crispa and S. testigera) and a proposal of neotype designation is made for some Miocene species: X. deshayesi, X. burdigalensis, and X. grateloupi
I Lepidotteri Ropaloceri della Riserva Statale di Popolamento Animale "Lago di Burano" (Capalbio, Grosseto).
during 2007-2009 we surveyed rhopalocerans in the Riserva Statale di Popolamento animale “Lago di Burano” (southern Tuscany). We
found fifty species, some of which are widespread and common (Pieris brassicae, Colias crocea, Polyommatus icarus, Lasiommata megera,
Pieris rapae, Gonepteryx cleopatra, Maniola jurtina, Coenonympha pamphilus, Papilio machaon, Limenitis reducta and Kanetisa circe),
but others, such as Thymelicus acteon, Gegenes nostrodamus, Zerynthia cassandra, Lycaena thersamon, Charaxes jasius, Libythea celtis,
Hipparchia fagi and Hipparchia statilinus, are threatened. The main threats to rhopalocerans in the reserve are vegetation and water control
in agriculture. To reduce the impact of agriculture it is suggested: i) to maintain a strip of uncultivated land at least 20 m wide around the
lake and a belt of vegetation 2-4 m wide along channels and ditches; ii) to conserve hedges and shrubs; iii) to cut herbaceous plants in december
or January
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The Critical Apparatus Ontology (CAO): Modelling the TEI Critical Apparatus as a Knowledge Graph
This paper seeks to explore the use of semantic web technologies to enhance the re- /presentation of the critical apparatus that accompanies a TEI digital scholarly edition. The apparatus is a key instrument for critical editions. Its encoding poses a challenge for researchers, who strive to achieve highly expressive digital representations of their scholarly views. So far, no comprehensive ontology has been developed for the representation of the critical apparatus. This study makes a first step towards filling this gap by proposing the Critical Apparatus Ontology, an OWL ontology for representing the critical apparatus as a knowledge graph
[Newspaper Clipping: Author Claims Evidence of Second JFK Assassin #1]
Newspaper article titled "Author Claims Evidence of Second JFK Assassin." The article states that author Richard J. Whalen concluded "that there is circumstantial evidence to support the theory of a second assassin in the shooting of President John F. Kennedy.
