    Inverse Constraint Learning and Generalization by Transferable Reward Decomposition

    We present the problem of inverse constraint learning (ICL), which recovers constraints from demonstrations to autonomously reproduce constrained skills in new scenarios. However, ICL suffers from an ill-posed nature, leading to inaccurate inference of constraints from demonstrations. To figure it out, we introduce a transferable constraint learning (TCL) algorithm that jointly infers a task-oriented reward and a task-agnostic constraint, enabling the generalization of learned skills. Our method TCL additively decomposes the overall reward into a task reward and its residual as soft constraints, maximizing policy divergence between task- and constraint-oriented policies to obtain a transferable constraint. Evaluating our method and five baselines in three simulated environments, we show TCL outperforms state-of-the-art IRL and ICL algorithms, achieving up to a 72% higher task-success rates with accurate decomposition compared to the next best approach in novel scenarios. Further, we demonstrate the robustness of TCL on two real-world robotic tasks.

    Bamboo–Alginate Composite as a Sustainable Structural Material

    In the current context of environmental concern and energy crisis, wood-based composites are attracting attention as sustainable materials; however, their mechanical properties require improvement. Herein, we report a novel method for the preparation of bamboo composites with excellent mechanical properties and formability. After delignification of bamboo, an alginate solution was filled into the voids of delignified bamboo (DB) under reduced pressure to obtain alginate-impregnated DB (ADB). Then, the alginate was subjected successively to ionic and chemical cross-linking by adding CaCl2 and glutaraldehyde, respectively. The mechanical strength of the resulting dually cross-linked ADB (DCB) was improved by removing unfilled voids via a hot-press forming process. The tensile and flexural strengths of the hot-pressed DCB (HP-DCB) showed the highest values ever reported for wood composites, i.e., 1.12 GPa and 678 MPa, respectively, which can be attributed to the strong adhesion and effective load transfer stemming from the dual cross-linking of alginate between the bamboo fibers. In particular, the presence of flexible and adhesive alginate enabled the reshaping of HP-DCB into desired shapes through rehydration and molding, demonstrating its potential for various applications requiring ecofriendly, high-strength, and lightweight materials

    Highly efficient evaporative cooling by all-day water evaporation using hierarchically porous biomass

    Abstract We developed a 3D solar steam generator with the highest evaporation rate reported so far using a carbonized luffa sponge (CLS). The luffa sponge consisted of entangled fibers with a hierarchically porous structure; macropores between fibers, micro-sized pores in the fiber-thickness direction, and microchannels in the fiber-length direction. This structure remained after carbonization and played an important role in water transport. When the CLS was placed in the water, the microchannels in the fiber-length direction transported water to the top surface of the CLS by capillary action, and the micro-sized pores in the fiber-thickness direction delivered water to the entire fiber surface. The water evaporation rate under 1-sun illumination was 3.7 kg/m2/h, which increased to 14.5 kg/m2/h under 2 m/s wind that corresponded to the highest evaporation rate ever reported under the same condition. The high evaporation performance of the CLS was attributed to its hierarchically porous structure. In addition, it was found that the air temperature dropped by 3.6 °C when the wind passed through the CLS because of the absorption of the latent heat of vaporization. The heat absorbed by the CLS during water evaporation was calculated to be 9.7 kW/m2 under 1-sun illumination and 2 m/s wind, which was 10 times higher than the solar energy irradiated on the same area (1 kW/m2)

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
