A bilingual collection of Italian translated poems on Armenian-themed topics penned by Armenian-Canadian Diaspora author and emeritus professor Alan Whitehorn. The poems deal with the 1915 Armenian Genocide, travels though Armenia, Armenian soci- ety and politics, the Nagorno Karabakh wars of the 1990s and 2020s, Diaspora identity issues, the continued vexing problem of genocide along with its denial, and the ongo- ing existential challenges facing Armenians, both in Armenia itself and in the Diaspora. Poems selected for the Italian volume are primarily drawn from Whitehorn’s previously published books: Ancestral Voices, Just Poems, Return to Armenia and Karabakh Diary. The poetry translations were led by Sona Haroutyunian, associate professor of Armenian and Translation Studies at Ca’ Foscari University Venice

Replication Data for: Bargaining Delays in the Government Formation Process

    No full text
In parliamentary democracies, the transfer of power from one government to the next is sometimes characterized by long periods of negotiations in which party leaders bargain over the composition and policy objectives of a new cabinet. Although these delays can have substantial political and economic consequences, surprisingly little is known about their determinants. Moreover, the few studies that exist reach contradictory conclusions. In this article, the author examines how factors relating to uncertainty and bargaining complexity influence the duration of the government formation process in 16 West European countries from 1944 to 1998. In line with the article’s theoretical expectations, the author finds that factors increasing uncertainty over the type of cabinet that is acceptable always lead to delays in forming governments but that factors increasing bargaining complexity, such as the number of parties and ideological polarization in the legislature, only do so when there is sufficient uncertainty among political actors. The present analysis helps to resolve the contradictory findings in the literature

Resting state Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (rs-fMRI) is becoming one of the most important imaging modality widely used to understand network functionality. However, due to the variability at subject scale, mapping common networks across individuals is by now a real challenge. In this work we present a novel approach to group-wise community detection, i.e. identification of functional coherent sub-graphs across multiple subjects. This approach is based on a joint diagonalization of two or more graph Laplacians, aiming at finding a common eigenspace across individuals, over which clustering in fewer dimension can then be applied. This allows to identify common sub-networks across different graphs. We applied our method to rs-fMRI dataset of mouse brain finding most important sub-networks recently described in literature

Migrant integration between homeland and host society. Volume 2, How countries of origin impact migrant integration outcomes : an analysis

    No full text
This book provides solid empirical evidence into the role that countries and communities of origin play in the migrant integration processes at destination. Coverage explores several important questions, including: To what extent do policies pursued by receiving countries in Europe and the US complement or contradict each other? What effective contribution do they make to the successful integration of migrants? What obstacles do they put in their way? This title is the second of two complementary volumes, each of which is designed to stand alone and provide a different approach to the topic. Here, renowned contributors present evidence from the studies of 55 origin countries on five continents and 28 countries of destination in Europe where both quantitative and qualitative research was conducted. In addition, the chapters detail results of a unique worldwide survey of 900 organisations working on migrant integration and diaspora engagement. The results draw on an innovative methodology and new approaches to the analysis of large-scale survey data. This examination into the tensions between integration policies and diaspora engagement policies will appeal to academics, policymakers, integration practitioners, civil society organisations, as well as students.-- 1: Introduction, Anna Di Bartolomeo, Sona Kalantaryan, Justyna Salamońska -- 2: Introducing emigration and diaspora policies in integration studies, Anna Di Bartolomeo, Sona Kalantaryan, Justyna Salamońska, Cameron Thibos -- 3: Counting the uncountable – measuring migrant integration between origin and destination Anna Di Bartolomeo, Sona Kalantaryan -- 4: Civil society organisations and the diaspora-integration nexus Justyna Salamońska, Anne Unterreiner -- 5: Countries of origin as organisers of emigration: Moroccans and Turks in Belgium Sonia Gsir, Jérémy Mandin, Elsa Mescoli -- 6: Asylum seekers in diaspora: Turks and Iranians in Sweden Francesco Pasetti -- 7: Following the global competition for talent: what risks to integration in the UK? Are IEEE 802.11 wireless networks appropriate for video streaming in the presence of interference? An experimental answer

    No full text
The performance of video streaming applications over Wireless Local Area Network (WLANs), in presence of interference, are here dealt with. In particular, the IEEE 802.11g standard is considered and Bluetooth and WLAN competitive data traffic are analyzed as interferer. The analysis is conducted experimentally following a cross-layer approach and through the use of properly developed testbed within a semi-anechoic chamber. The goal is to investigate the performance of video streaming applications over WLAN in the presence of both network/transport and physical layer interference, and to deduce from the experiments valuable hints for improving the setup of a WLAN

VoIP Over IEEE 802.11 Wireless Networks: Experimental Analysis of Interference Effects

    No full text
The interference effects on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are here dealt with. In particular, attention is paid to the IEEE 802.11g standard, with Bluetooth signals, Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and competitive data traffic acting as interferer. The analysis is conducted experimentally following a cross-layer approach and through the deployment of a proper testbed within a semi-anechoic chamber. The purpose is to investigate on the effects of some common types of interference on a WLAN supporting VoIP applications, and to deduce from the experiments valuable hints for improving the setup of a WLAN in the presence of interference. Cross-layer measurements are performed at network/transport, physical and application layer
