The Author/Translator Interactional Process. A Case Study

    No full text
See Naples and Kill (1988) is a lively and colourful novel by the con-temporary English writer, Gregory Dowling, translated into Italian in 2015. Following the tradition of translation studies (Venuti 2000, Bass-nett 2002, Cronin 2006), this paper analyses the rewriting process of literary translation, considering in particular the fruitful but sometimes tense and even conflictual relationship between writer and translator. The translation of the novel See Naples and Kill was an ongoing rewriting process entailing a constant dialogue between the writer and the translator. Therefore, the study aims at answering two main ques-tions: what happens if the rewriting process of translation is constant-ly questioned by the author? What happens if the author has a good mastery of the target language and s/he is her/himself a translator? By exploring the relationship between translation and re-creation, the research focuses on the differences and similarities between the primary creation (source text) and the secondary creation (target text), and aims to verify in which way the dialogic encounter of two different personalities and cultures does not make them merge but, by retaining their own uniqueness, leads eventually to their mutually en-riching each other. A comparative analysis of the source text and the different drafts of the translated version accompanied by the author’s comments will shed light on the tense author-translator relationship in the specific case under investigation and how both actors handle this tension in order to create a new work resulting from the (dis)agreement of the two parties

Kimon a Siracusa. Spunti di riflessione sull’attività, lo stile e le opere minori dell’incisore

Kimon's output boasts numerous studios, though the minor nominals are often been excluded from scientific analysis in favor of the major ones. This contribution is dedicated to these «minor» works (in particular silver hemidracmae and bronze hemilitra) listed in the catalogue. Despite the presence of Cimon's signature, they appear distance itself from the rest of its production. By analyzing their style and using comparisons with the larger dies by Kimon himself and other engravers, the author offers new ideas for reflections and questions regarding the engraver's professional activity and procedures of production practiced between the various Syracusan ateliers of the end of the V-beginning of the IV century BC

The contribution analyzes the numismatic documentation found in the territory of central-southern Sicily in the period between the civil wars and the Julio-Claudian age, recomposing, where possible, the contexts of discovery. These are seven sites (Contrada Manca, near Vallelunga Pratameno, Castellazzo di Marianopoli, Piano della Clesia, Gibil Gabib; Bitalemi, Petrusa di Niscemi, Sofiana), whose numismatic finds are often unpublished, as well as in small numbers, so as to lead reflect on whether this contained documentation is an indicator of a depopulation of the territory or of a transformation of settlement methods with socio-economic repercussions on the use of money

The subject of the contribution is the “NUMMI DIGITALI” project which aims to enhance the numismatic collection of the Archaeological Museum “A. Salinas” in Palermo, closed to public use for over seventy years, which will become accessible thanks to the close interrelationship between numismatic-archaeological methodologies and the IT approach. The project, curated by Lavinia Sole, Numismatics researcher at the Culture and Society Department of the University of Palermo, within the PON "Research and Innovation" 2014-2020, Axis IV-Action IV.4, provides for the creation of a digital database, in line with the standards and cataloging tools of the ICCD and with the methodological guidelines of the National Plan for the digitization of the cultural heritage of the MiC; the interconnection of the database with the web for a real use through the potential offered by ICT; the activation of interactive communication processes with the user through high-resolution photographs and 3D renderings featuring points of interest with references to hypertexts and/or multimedia

The major economic constraint for culturing sole (Solea solea) is its slow and variable growth. The objective was to study the relationship between feed intake/efficiency, growth, and (non-) feeding behaviour of sole. Sixteen juveniles with an average (SD) growth of 2.7 (1.9) g/kg0.8/d were selected on their growth during a 4-week period in which they were housed communally with 84 other fish. Selected fish were housed individually during a second 4-week period to measure individual feed intake, growth, and behaviour. Fish were hand-fed three times a day during the dark phase of the day until apparent satiation. During six different days, behaviour was recorded twice daily during 3 minutes by direct observations. Total swimming activity, frequency of burying and of escapes were recorded. At the beginning and end of the growth period, two sequential behavioural tests were performed: “Novel Environment” and “Light Avoidance”. Fish housed individually still exhibited pronounced variation in feed intake (CV = 23%), growth (CV = 25%) and behavior (CV = 100%). Differences in feed intake account for 79% of the observed individual differences in growth of sole. Fish with higher variation in feed intake between days and between meals within days had significantly a lower total feed intake (r = -0.65 and r = -0.77) and growth. Active fish showed significantly higher feed intake (r = 0.66) and growth (r = 0.58). Boldness during both challenge tests was related to fast growth: (1) fish which reacted with a lower latency time to swim in a novel environment had significantly higher feed intake (r = -0.55) and growth (r = -0.66); (2) fish escaping during the light avoidance test tended to show higher feed intake (

The contribution analyzes the structure, composition and contexts of the archaic age bronze hoards found in the colonial and anellenic sites of Sicily. The particular frequency of hoards in sacred areas is evident, where they are consecrated to the chthonic divinities due to their intrinsic value, linked to their metallic nature and their notion of weight
